Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Nuovi distretti residenziali peri-urbani in Svezia. Traslazione adattiva e verifica di modelli, tendenze e linguaggi internazionali
Full text linkOggetto della ricerca sono gli insediamenti periferici e peri-urbani di nuovo impianto, a prevalente carattere residenziale, e i relativi processi complessi di concezione, progettazione, realizzazione e gestione.
L'approccio critico mira a confrontare una visuale di carattere generale - che esamina fattori invarianti comuni a tutte le più avanzate esperienze europee (Germania, Paesi Bassi, Francia) - e una di carattere locale che si concentra sulla particolare declinazione che in Svezia viene data a tali fattori in rapporto a specifiche condizioni al contorno di natura politica-economica (welfare) e di cultura architettonica (tradizione del moderno).
La ricerca si colloca nel settore disciplinare dell'urban design - con particolare riferimento alla scala dell'urban district e del neighborhood (quartiere) - e, coerentemente con la visione contemporanea del progetto come processo, privilegia l'analisi dell'attività progettuale all'interno di strategie di trasformazione urbana basate sul community development (presenza di stakeholder e utenti nelle diverse fasi di concezione e realizzazione).
I casi di studio presi in esame rappresentano modelli insediativi di interesse poiché generati dall'interazione tra la pratica architettonica - rappresentata dall'innovazione sul piano edilizio-costruttivo (il tema del Green Building) e dalla ricerca sugli assetti urbani avanzati (temi: New Urbanism, Transit-Oriented Development e Smart Growth) - e la vocazione partecipativa del processo di trasformazione, orientato al binomio welfare-sostenibilità.
Lo scenario attuale pone, a tutte le tradizioni culturali europee, la sfida dell'adeguamento degli impianti urbani e delle reti infrastrutturali, del ricompattamento delle aree urbane, della loro organizzazione multi-centrica e della mixitè, funzionale e sociale. Condizioni che rendono particolarmente importanti, per la ricerca architettonica, una ridefinizione e una ri-concettualizzazione di aspetti progettuali classici quali la replicabilità del modello, la multidisciplinarità dell’approccio, l’attenzione alle componenti economiche ed ecologiche del progetto e alle sue ricadute sociali. Condizioni nelle quali la vicenda scandinava - come già avvenuto in altre epoche dell'architettura moderna - si qualifica come terreno privilegiato per la riflessione teorica e, al tempo stesso, per l'esperienza pratica.
In rapporto al quadro sopra descritto la ricerca individua, nel territorio intermedio tra piano e progetto, quattro tematiche da cui partire per analizzare l'esperienza svedese contemporanea dei nuovi insediamenti peri-urbani:
- Green Building. L'insieme delle soluzioni progettuali e delle tecnologie costruttive attraverso le quali la componente residenziale dei nuovi quartieri ottiene la massimizzazione della prestazione energetica mediante lo sfruttamento delle risorse locali (energia, acqua, materiali da costruzione) e la riduzione degli impatti sull'ambiente naturale. Un tema su cui incide anche la differente natura delle normative di riferimento con riferimento, ad esempio, alla LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) di matrice statunitense. L'applicazione di questa chiave progettuale al block (isolato urbano) genera, nell'universo dei tipi urbani, una selezione e una reinterpretazione adattativa che, nel tempo, tende a produrre una misurabile divergenza dai modelli tradizionali;
- Disegno della città (a scala di quartiere). L'urban design è il settore disciplinare nel quale - a differenza del piano urbanistico - la composizione urbana, la città come spazio "a quattro dimensioni", svolge il ruolo principale come catalizzatore della complessità delle istanze e come luogo di sintesi strategica delle soluzioni. Due linee, tra tutte, si segnalano come principali motori di rinnovamento: la accessibilità dell'insediamento rispetto alla urban area di pertinenza (vedi TOD, già citato, rif. teorico P. Calthorpe) e la progettazione integrata, interdisciplinare, che pone al centro l'utente e la fruibilità del quartiere anche, e soprattutto, negli spazi aperti;
- Mixitè funzionale e sociale. Sono due tra i principali criteri a cui l'urban design contemporaneo si affida, già da anni, per realizzare condizioni "che favoriscono pratiche sociali rilevanti" (rif. B. Secchi). Nell'esperienza scandinava attuale essi si concretano nella redistribuzione di funzioni (pregiate e di supporto alla residenza) e di classi sociali all'interno di nuovi urban neighbour/district (distretti urbani/quartieri) dimensionati per una popolazione di 20-25.000 abitanti (a fronte dei 3-5.000 della precedente fase insediativa, primi anni '90). Una rimodulazione evolutiva di principi già da tempo presenti nella cittadinanza e nel sistema di welfare locale che tende a rinnovare una già avanzata capacità di sintesi tra interesse pubblico e investimento privato (rif. R. Krier "res pubblica > res economica > civitas").
- Community development. L'architetto contemporaneo opera in una condizione che richiede, in maniera differente e in misura crescente rispetto al passato, una stretta interrelazione con i soggetti portatori di interesse nella trasformazione urbana, con altri settori disciplinari che devono fattivamente concorrere alla progettazione, con l'utenza che si esprime sia in forma aggregata (associazioni, rappresentanze, comitati) che in forma parcellizzata (partecipazione diretta). In area scandinava lo spettro dei riferimenti di carattere ambientale spazia dagli indirizzi sovranazionali all'educazione ambientale del cittadino. Sul piano della coesione la “Nordic Strategy for Sustainable Development” attribuisce più importanza, rispetto al passato, alle dinamiche sociali ed economiche che interessano le comunità urbane nei loro processi di crescita.
La capacità dell'architetto di comprendere vincoli e opportunità associate a questo quadro (problem) determina gran parte dell'efficacia dell'azione progettuale (solving)
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Full text linkWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
Full text linkWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
