Automated model structure variation and policy robustness testing: A procedure for innovation diffusion models

    No full text
n this paper we present a procedure that enables a systematic and partially automated parameterization and selection of agent-based models of the diffusion of innovations and policies to support diffusion processes. A prototype on the diffusion of water saving shower heads is presented. Our results suggest that the presented approach can adequately and systematically evaluate different sets of parameters and model structures against known diffusion data.Energie and Industri

Connections between Author and Narrator-protagonist: Autofiction in Essa gente, by Chico Buarque de Holanda

    No full text
This article offers an analysis of the novel Essa Gente (2019) by Chico Buarque de Holanda and seeks to examine aspects of the narrative that show possible intersections between the author’s life and the story told. The assumption is that the novel, told in the first person by the main character, stands on the threshold between autobiography and fiction, falling into the category known as autofiction, a form of narrative quite popular nowadays. The hybridity of this type of self-writing invites the reader to a constant questioning about what belongs to the author’s life and what is fictional creation. The theoretical support for the discussion on the nature of the autofictional text will be taken from the work of Leyla Perrone-Moisés (2016), Karl Erik Schollhammer (2009), Serge Doubrovsky (2014), Luciene Azevedo (2008), Diana Klinger (2006), and Anna Faedrich (2015). The author creates an ambiguous and ironic story in which autobiographical and fictional elements intertwine, promoting a deep reflection on affective conflicts, social declines, historical scars, and on the turbulent Brazilian political situation from 2016 to 2019. Placebo and Nocebo Responses in Gabapentin Enacarbil and Pregabalin Trials for Restless Legs Syndrome:Time-Course Model-Based Network Meta-Analysis and Meta-analysis of Proportions

    No full text
Purpose:Placebo responses are often stronger in randomized controlled trials (RCT) on conditions that measure subjective improvement in symptoms, such as restless legs syndrome (RLS). This meta-analysis sought to quantify both placebo and nocebo responses in published RCTs of gabapentin enacarbil (GEn) and pregabalin. Methods:In the first meta-analytic approach, we evaluated the time-courses taken by the participants randomized to the different doses of GEn and pregabalin and to placebo in their responses in International RLS Study Group Rating Scale (IRLS) scores. This was primarily evaluated by estimating the posterior median ET50s, the time (days) at which 50% of maximum response was achieved in IRLS scores for these participants. In a second meta-analytic approach, one-arm meta-analyses estimated proportions of participants on placebo considered “responders” on the investigator-initiated Clinical Global Impression-Improvement (CGI-I) scale, and separately of those who developed somnolence and dizziness. Results:A total of 16 RCTs were included in this meta-analysis. Relative differences in ET50s (median and 95% credible intervals) between GEn 600, 900, 1200, 1800, 2400 mg/d doses and placebo were 1.09 (0.07; 2.92), 1.35 (0.05; 5.85), 0.56 (0.02; 1.79), 0.62 (0.03; 2.34) and 1.61 (0.10; 5.22) days, respectively, and between pregabalin mean doses of 107.8 and 337.5 mg/d and placebo were 21.75 (0.89; 145.26) and 2.54 (0.12; 8.41) days, respectively, indicating largely clinically insignificant differences. Pooled proportion of CGI-I responders amongst the participants randomized to placebo was 0.40 [(95% confidence intervals (CI): 0.31; 0.49), I2=84%]. Duration of RCTs and previous RLS treatment were associated with CGI-I response based on meta-regression analyses. Pooled proportions of participants randomized to placebo who developed somnolence and dizziness were 0.05 [(95%CIs: 0.03; 0.08), I2=75%], and 0.02 [(95%CIs: 0.01; 0.04), I2=62%], respectively. Conclusions:GEn and pregabalin showed substantial placebo responses in RCTs. Further studies are needed that would identify predictor variables for placebo responders or non-responders

A Rare Intrascrotal Metastases From Renal Cell Carcinoma: A Case Report

    No full text
AbstractMetastatic renal cell carcinoma is potentially a lethal disease with in some cases aggressive behavior. The given fact that the patterns of metastases from RCC are not clearly identified, which may involve some rare metastatic locations. We present a case of 58 years old male presented with painless left scrotal mass, which was discovered to be an intrascrotal metastases appeared 3 years after nephrectomy for ipsilateral renal cell carcinoma. We believe that the rarity of the metastatic site and the intriguing possible mechanism of spread make an interesting case for clinicians and could add more follow-up measures for patients treated from renal cell carcinoma

Second language word processing in sentence contexts: Pre-lexical prediction versus post-lexical integration

    No full text
This study investigated the effects of sentence contexts on the second language (L2) word recognition process. It aims at finding whether second language (L2) learners of English perform similar to English native speakers in terms of using the sentence context to predict upcoming word in their L2. A group of L2 participants and a control group of native speakers (L1) participants performed a cross-modal priming task in which they were asked to make a lexical decision on a visually presented word while listening to a semantically related or non- related English sentence. The test was conducted to determine whether both groups of participants were able to predict an upcoming word based on the context of the preceding sentence that is auditorily presented. The study is conducted using PsychoPy software whereas the data was analyzed using linear-mixed effects modeling in RStudio software. The results showed that the L1 speakers were able to predict an upcoming word based on the context of the preceding sentence. That is, a significantly faster recognition of the related word was observed compared to the less related words. On other hand, the English second language participants were not as able to predict an upcoming word as quickly as the English native speaker participants were. However, the L2 participants showed post-access lexical processing or what is called an integrating process of the presented word to the previous sentence context. That is, an effect of the sentence context was observed with L2 participants, yet only after reading the presented word, they decide whether it is appropriate to the preceding sentence context or not. The 'true use of reading' : Sarah Fielding and mid eighteenth-century literary strategies.

    No full text
PhDThe aim of this thesis is to explore, by examining her life and works, how Sarah Fielding (1710-68) established her identity as an author. The definition of her role involves her notions of the functions of writing and reading. Sarah Fielding attempts to invite readers to form a sense of ties by tacit understanding of her messages. As she believes that a work of literature is produced through collaboration between the writer and the reader, it is an important task in her view to show her attentiveness toward reading practice. In her consideration of reading, she has two distinct, even opposite views of her audience: on the one hand a familiar and limited circle of readers with shared moral and cultural values and on the other potential readers among the unknown mass of people. The dual targets direct her to devise various strategies. She tries to appeal to those who can endorse and appreciate her moral values as well as her learning. Her writings and letters testify that she is sensitive to the demands of the literary market, trying to lead the taste of readers by inventing new forms. The thesis opens with an overview of Sarah Fielding's career, followed by a consideration of her critical attention to the roles of reading. I go on to examine the narrative structures and strategies she deploys, with a particular emphasis on her use of the epistolary method. The following chapter deals with her attention to the reading of the moral message tangibly embodied in her educational writing. It is followed by an analysis of the activity which earned her a reputation as a learned woman. Various as the forms of her works are, they invariably reflect her attempt to balance herself between the two demands of inventiveness and familiarity
