Methodology: Quantitative study with an exploratory orientation and a deductive ap- proach. Secondary cross-sectional data analysed by ANOVA-tests and re- gression analysis. Compared with prior research. Theoretical perspective: The underlying theory is based on previous research regarding mergers & acquisitions based on value creation and industries. Empiric foundation: Empirical evidence is based on data from 209 acquisitions of Swedish pub- licly listed companies during the period of 2001-01-01 - 2009-12-31. Three explanatory variables and five controlling variables have been tested in or- der to explain any variation. Conclusion: No industry performed significantly better or worse following acquisitions. None of the studied variables could in unison explain the change in market capitalization within the industries

Trump's $12 billion farm subsidies are a solution to a political problem of his own making

Last week, President Trump announced a 12 billion program of farm subsidies to assist farmers hurt by his escalating trade war with China, Canada, and other countries. Stephanie Rickard, author of a new book on government subsidies, Spending to Win, argues that this kind of financial assistance is almost always introduced to help domestic producers harmed by tariff reductions, not increases

In his article, Rickard Sandell claims how the changeable demographic situation of the north of Africa and many Arab countries is a determining factor of their economic problems and could have been one contributing aspect of the recent Arab Spring revolts, along with the claims for social and political improvements. The author predicts that the numerous generations aged between 20 and 30 now present in many of these countries will strain their work markets even more and increase the probability of new clashes and tensions

In particular, there is growing evidence that the cell’s environment is finely tuned to modulate the stability, kinetics, binding, and activity of proteins within it. This thesis uses computational techniques to better understand the atomistic mechanisms underlying these impacts on protein dynamics. I begin by describing the motivation and challenges of simulating biomolecules in-cell. In Chapter 1, I discuss the in-cell environment and introduce crowding, sticking, and quinary interactions, the basic interactions that affect protein-dynamics in-cell. I briefly highlight several experimental studies that have demonstrated the impact of the cellular environment on protein dynamics over the last fifteen years. Then, I discuss the history and current landscape of simulating biomolecules in cellular conditions, including notable studies and ongoing challenges. In Chapter 2, I describe the design, construction, and simulation of my contribution to this landscape—several ~200,000 atom models that depict small sections of the E. coli and H. sapiens cytoplasm in atomistic detail. Then, I move into the results of these cytosolic simulations, including the effect of the cellular environment on ATP (Chapter 3), the partial folding of a small, fast-folding WW domain in the E. coli models (Chapter 4), and the nonspecific protein-protein sticking observed throughout my simulations (Chapter 5). Additionally, I present preliminary results from the H. sapiens cytoplasm simulations, including partial folding of another fast-folding construct and quinary interactions between two enzymes (Chapter 6). Finally, I describe the results of a collaboration between the Gruebele group, the Pogorelov group, Professor Stephen Taylor (UIUC Department of Music), Kurt Hebel, and Carla Scaletti (both of the sound design software company Symbolic Sound). Together, we have developed data sonification techniques to use sound as a teaching tool and data analysis aid in protein folding research (Chapter 7)

Venezuelan Politics and Society in times of Chavismo : Política y sociedad en la Venezuela del Chavismo

Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez Frías is probably the most controversial among the Latin American political leaders of the recent decade(s). The former coup-leader (or military rebel, depending on the interpretation by the analyst), who was democratically elected President of the Republic in 1998, is likewise a forefront figure of the current wave of Leftist transformations on the continent. This first edition of the Stockholm Review of Latin American Studies is dedicated to the topic of Venezuelan politics and society in times of Chavismo. A rather broad range of researchers from three continents have contributed with distinct points of departure and scopes of focus, with the first three articles in English and the five subsequent ones in Spanish. In the first, Daniel Hellinger employs the concept of tercermundismo to approach Venezuelan politics and society in the context of rising and developing Chavismo. Aspects of social and political inclusion and exclusion are analytically revised, as well as other relevant factors behind the popularity (and the rejection) of Chávez. Thereafter, Angel Alvarez presents a series of analytical arguments regarding social cleavages and political polarization in the context of the break-down of the ancient regime and its consequences for democracy. Rickard Lalander then emphasizes the destiny of Venezuelan decentralization since Hugo Chávez came to power. José Vicente Carrasquero addresses certain aspects of participatory democracy and social and political inclusion and exclusion respectively, and offers a balance of accounts of the first seven years of the Chávez government. José Antonio Rivas Leone contributes with an historical analysis of the crises and process of de-institutionalization of the Venezuelan party system, considering both internal factors, as the exhaustion of the traditional parties, and external, like the decentralization process since 1989. In their qualitative study, Friedrich Welsch and Gabriel Reyes approach the possible social, class and ethnical differences between the supporters and the opponents of the Chávez movement, also taking into consideration citizens auto-classified as independent. The study by Carlos Blanco constitutes a critical analysis of whether the regime as officially declared is to be considered revolutionary, or, as the author argues, rather a type of neo-authoritarianism. Likewise, both the behaviour of the government and the political opposition are reviewed by Blanco, as well as Venezuela’s relationship with the United States during the Chávez government. Finally, in the contribution presented by Oscar Reyes, the main focus is the concept of 21st Century Socialism, which in recent years has been used by analysts and by Chávez himself as an umbrella term for the present Venezuelan government

"This orphan play": Cardenio and the construction of the author

Critical and popular interest in Cardenio/Double Falsehood has focused largely on Shakespeare. Through a combination of Anglocentrism and Shakespeare-centrism, Shakespeare's collaborator, John Fletcher, and the Spanish author of their source, Miguel de Cervantes, have been largely excluded from the discussion. This process of exclusion may seem to begin with Lewis Theobald, but in a sense this process begins with the works of these early modern writers themselves. For what we find in Don Quixote, in Cardenio as far as we can glimpse its traces in the pages of Double Falsehood, and in other collaborative works by Shakespeare and Fletcher, is a striking concern with the idea of the singular author. This article examines the representation of authorship within works by Shakespeare, Fletcher and Cervantes, in the context of the textual history of Cardenio/Double Falsehood and the critical debates it has generated. It argues that these writers all in different ways contributed to the lack of visibility of the processes of both collaboration and intercultural exchange, and thus to subsequent constructions within Anglophone culture of "Shakespeare" as transcendent genius and autonomous author

A sensitivity analysis of CFD transition modelling in the context of vortex roll-up prediction

A sensitivity analysis of the transitional flow over a NACA662 - 415 foil and the elliptical Arndt wing is carried out. The SST turbulence model is complemented with the ? - Re ~?t transition model to determine the effect of varying turbulence intensity and eddy-viscosity ratio on the integral quantities and transition locations. Local grid refinement at the transition location is used to improve convergence. The skin friction drag coefficient is found to be more sensitive to the inflow conditions for 5? angle of attack compared to 9?. The movement of the transition location on the suction side is found to be responsible for this. The transition model captures a laminar separation bubble at the pressure side for both angles of attack, causing the lift coefficient to drop slightly. 3D calculations for the Arndt wing with the same foil section show that applying a transition model can decrease the boundary layer thickness by a factor of three, which is expected to influence the viscous core radius and consequently the minimum pressure in the tip vortex.Ship Hydromechanics and Structure

Abstract Author: Rickard Rudelius and Maria Olsson Title: Youth offenders in society - a qualitative analysis of documents on the construction of juvenile delinquency. Supervisor: Lars B Ohlsson How a social phenomenon is defined is an important scientific question (Blumer, 1970). On that basis, does this study aim to look into how the juvenile delinquency is constructed in the Swedish governments official investigation (SOU) during the 21st-century and to give an understanding into what scientific ideas that may have influenced the construct. Furthermore was the objective to see if there is a difference in the construction of the phenomenon during the 21st-century. The empirical evidence in this study consists of two SOU-investigations, SOU 2004:122 and SOU 2012:34. In this study we argue that the construct of juvenile delinquency is dependent on the values that exist within the timeframe and that it has shifted in certain areas from 2004 to 2012. In our findings we show how youth offenders is systematically categorized after age and gender and, dependent on the level of offence, how they are categorized with social problems. We show a shift in the construct of juvenile delinquency from a 15-17 year old man-based perspective into including 18-20 year old criminals as well as women. Our results also show how the solution to the phenomenon is constructed and the problem that consist between the justice system and the organization tasked with treating the young offenders.
