"Isra'iliyyat" and classical exegetes' comments on the "calf with a hollow sound": Qur'an-XX,83-98/VII,147-155 with special reference to ibn 'Atiyya (Examining discernible changes in Jewish and Christian source literature utilized throughout Muslim historical commentary)
The term "Isra'iliyyat" usually refers to early literature of various types attributed by Muslim scholars to Jewish and Christian sources. Despite the continual and pervasive negative regard for "isra'iliyyat", however, a massive amount of this material has been utilised by Muslim commentators throughout Islamic history. In this article, we primarily focus on the verses from Surah Ta-Ha (20:83-98) and Surah A'raf (7:147-155) and then attempt to show how the major Muslim exegetes interpreted these verses; we will discuss the difficulties they encountered, their success in overcoming these challenges, their main hermeneutic devices, and most importantly, their attitudes towards the notion of "isra'iliyyat". The result or the value of our investigation lies in the discovery that even within the highly structured, repetitive confines of the classical Quranic commentaries certain discernible changes in presentation and understanding have taken place. We have seen that there are some commentators who, without using this technical term, clearly reduced the number of "isra'iliyyat" in their commentaries. Pride of place in this respect belongs to ibn 'Atiyya
The Ibadi Approach to the Methodology of Qur'anic Exegesis
In recent times, research on the Ib tradition by both Muslim and non-Muslim scholars has increased, but has not yet shed light on the wider significance of this tradition. While the primary focus of researchers has been on the Ib tradition as a school of thought, its important contribution to various Islamic disciplines is still neglected. For this reason, there is a serious need for a comprehensive study of the Ib works on Islam, especially as new manuscripts are continually being discovered. When we look at Ib Islamic literature in general and compare Ib jurisprudence and theology, we realise that the poorest and most unexplored field of study consists of the Ib works on exegesis (tafsr). The once inaccessible and insufficient amount of Ib sources and materials may have accounted for this lack of interest; however, today, materials related to Ib exegesis and understanding are becoming available. In this article, we focus on the methodology of Qur'anic exegesis with reference to commentators from the Ib tradition. As far as we know, this paper is a first in this field of research, and will discuss the primary features of the Ib method, its similarities to and differences from other exegetical approaches, and its original contributions
From Albania to Brazil: Ismail Kadaré's Broken april and its filmic adaptation, Walter Salles' Abril despedaçado
Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura Correspondente, Florianópolis, 2007The aim of the present study is to analyse how issues of Albanian national identity are portrayed in Ismail Kadaré's novel Broken April (Prilli i Thyer), and how such features have been appropriated and translated onto the screen into a Northeastern Brazilian context. I depart from the premise that, even though Brazilian elements are indeed shown in the film, the non existence of the Kanun in Brazil, and the use of narrative techniques different from the ones employed in the novel render the story of the blood feuds in the film more universal than the genuinely Albanian reality depicted in the novel. In sum, the appropriation transcends the Albanian reality into a universal context, showing, at the same time, elements which are typical of the Brazilian culture.O objetivo do presente estudo é analisar como questões sobre a identidade nacional Albanesa são retratadas no romance Abril Despedaçado (Prilli i Thyer), de Ismail Kadaré, e como tais questões foram apropriadas e traduzidas para a tela num contexto Nordestino-Brasileiro.
A General Outlook for Orientalistic Discourse on the Chronology of the Qur'anLate Nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth centuries of Western literature on the Qur'an mainly concentrate on two issues. The first group try to seek to trace the influence of Jewish and Christian ideas on the Qur'an while the second group pay more attention to the reconstruction of the chronological order of the Qur'an. This article deals with mainly on the most important figures in the West whose works are still being read in the Universties. Theodor Nöldeke, Hartwig Hirschfeld, Richard Bell can be mentioned among these welknown Western students of Islam. Having disclosed their dissatisfaction with tradition, and acknowledged their exclusive reliance on the Qur'an, they developed different kinds of Qur'anic order. Although Nöldeke was the pioneer of the other two, they went further and rejected the unity of the Qur'anic surahs. Consequently, incontrast to Nöldeke's overall scheme they preferred a chronological order which are limited exclusively to the passages of the Qur'an rather than surahs. Nonetheless, there are also differences between these two. The difference between Hirschfeld and Bell lies in their concept of the history of the Qur'an. While Hirschfeld focused on the dogmatic concern of Qur'anic passages, Bell tried to analyse from several aspects to order Qur'anic passages. This article displays their similarities and differences together with the conclusion they have reached.https://www.marife.org/marife/article/view/91Atıf / Cite as: Albayrak, İsmail. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
