Atrazine and cancer incidence among pesticide applicators in the agricultural health study (1994-2007).
Atrazine is a triazine herbicide used widely in the United States. Although it is an animal carcinogen, the mechanism in rodents does not appear to operate in humans. Few epidemiologic studies have provided evidence for an association
Designing biocatalytic redox reactions with oxidoreductases for organic chemistry
The focus of this thesis is to identify improvements of oxidoreductase reactions to bring them to preparative scale. Three approaches were studied: (1) photoregeneration of oxidised nicotinamide cofactors with LEDs as light source and flavins, (2) direct regeneration of Old Yellow Enzymes with light or metals, (3) heme-thiolate enzyme peroxygenases in neat substrate conditions.Flavins are the main actors of the first two approaches. These redox cofactors have been chosen for their photocatalytic properties as a photosensitiser and as a cofactor in the so-called flavoproteins.BT/Biocatalysi
Playing to Lose?
In this thesis the author sets out to establish how WWII video games represent Wehrmacht soldiers when these games feature the German side as a playable faction. Because German soldiers in WWII video games are still often relegated to the role of ‘evil cannon fodder’ it is important to look at how games represent the Wehrmacht when they feature protagonists who are members of the Wehrmacht. By looking at the playable German narratives of Red Orchestra II – Heroes of Stalingrad (2011) and Company of Heroes – Opposing Fronts/Tales of Valor (2007/2009) using concepts from narratology and game studies several representative strategies emerge. The games are analysed on focalisation of the narrative, their use of historical sources, archival footage, propaganda and myths, and on the conditions set in-game which allow the German side to win a video game set in WWII. In looking at the focalisation of both German narratives it becomes apparent that focalisation does not always equate the point of view of the playable characters. Historical inaccuracies are compensated by presenting the narrative through use of propaganda and unreliable narrators. Elements of the ‘clean Wehrmacht myth’ as formulated by Alexander Pollak appear in both narratives but often work to counteract this myth. By studying the use of propaganda and symbols it becomes clear that accurate historical representation of Wehrmacht soldiers in video games suffers due to censorship laws concerning the use of National-Socialist symbols in the medium. Both games place a heavy emphasis on the psychological impact of the War on German soldiers, either through the use of embedded historical texts or through fictional personal narratives. By examining the games’ victory conditions the author establishes two victory paradigms applicable to a playable Wehrmacht, called: ‘quitting while you’re ahead’ and ‘postponing the inevitable’. The author concludes that, in representing the Wehrmacht in video games, game developers seem to prioritise psychological immersion over historical fidelity, although both games utilise historical source material throughout their respective narratives

Mobile robot swarming using radio signal strength measurements and dead-reckoning
The mobile robots considered in this thesis are six legged "Zebro" robots. These mobile robots will use Radio Signal Strength (RSS) measurements to determine the distances towards other mobile robots and radio beacons placed in the surroundings. A combination of distance measurements and dead-reckoning is used to perform a localization of the relative positions of the other mobile robots in the neighbourhood. The focus of the localization algorithm is to deal with a bad performance of the distance estimation, because this will result in uncertain position estimations. With knowledge about the bad performance of the localization an according suitable swarm algorithm is designed. This swarm algorithm is will also be used to test how valuable the position estimations can be as an addition to already existing swarm algorithms.Delft Center for Systems and ControlMechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineerin

Photocatalysis to promote cell-free biocatalytic reactions
Cofactors assist enzymes to catalyze reactions and are indispensable and ubiquitous in nature, playing a central role in metabolic pathways. In biocatalysis, common redox cofactors such as nicotinamide, flavin and heme can be activated by light or synthetized to vary redox potentials, leading to different types of reactions for the formation of interesting chiral products, unattainable through classical chemical methods. This chapter will focus on light-driven cell-free biocatalytic reactions activated via their redox cofactors.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.BT/Biocatalysi
Methyl bromide exposure and cancer risk in the Agricultural Health Study.
Methyl bromide is a genotoxic soil fumigant with high acute toxicity, but unknown human carcinogenicity. Although many countries have reduced methyl bromide use because of its ozone depleting properties, some uses remain in the United States and other countries, warranting further investigation of human health effects
A Study About Play Behavior Of Autistic Children From The Historical-cultural Perspective [um Estudo Sobre O Brincar De Crianças Autistas Na Perspectiva Histórico-cultural]
Play behavior of autistic children is described as very restricted and peculiar. Concerned with the search for promising educational practices, we use historical-cultural theory to analyze the ways through which autistic children orient themselves towards others and objects in situations of play. The study focuses on three subjects, aged between six and twelve years, during play sessions. These sessions were coordinated by the first author, who ascribed meaning to the children's actions and use of toys, and encouraged the emergence of imaginative play. Data were organized under two topics: children's modes of playing and adult's modes of participation. The findings suggest that the researcher's mediation allowed for the occurrence of many instances of orientation towards the other as well as moments of contextualized use of objects, including actions of role play.1712534(1995) Manual Diagnóstico e Estatístico de Transtornos Mentais (DSM-IV), , American Psychiatric Association., Porto Alegre: Artes MédicasBagarollo, M.F., (2005) A Ressignificação do Brincar das Crianças Autistas, , Dissertação de Mestrado, Universidade Metodista de Piracicaba-UNIMEP, Piracicaba, São PauloBosa, C., Autismo: Atuais Interpretações para Antigas Observações (2002) Em C. A Robotic Arm for Zebro
This thesis describes the choices, the implementation and the testing of the robotic arm for the Zebro. The Zebro is a rover designed for the European Rover Challenge (ERC). The design of the arm should be modular and be able to perform the tasks of the ERC. An arm was designed with five degrees of freedom. The motors chosen to drive the joints are of the brushless DC type. The control system to control the joints is implemented using a fuzzy P controller and the driver electronics are built on a PCB. The internal communication in the arm is done using the I2C protocol. Two master devices were defined in the base and in the end effector, the individual joints and temperature sensors are connected as slaves. The method of reduction of degrees of freedom is chosen as a way to solve the inverse kinematics problem. The constraints in order to implement trajectory planning is based on the stability of the Zebro during operation. A test plan is written and most tests are performed. It is found that the PCB did not function properly due to design errors. The motor control does function as expected.ElektronicaElektronicaElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc
