Background and Objectives: Small bowel obstruction (SBO) requires prompt diagnosis and management. Due to its advantages, POCUS can be beneficial when assessing SBO. However, it is still doubtful whether POCUS performed by an emergency doctor can prolong the time of patients with SBO in the emergency department (ED). The primary outcome was time to diagnosis when using POCUS compared to not using it. Secondary outcomes included the processing time in the ED, ED length of stay (LOS), rates of abdominal radiography, hospital LOS, and mortality. Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective, observational study in our ED from 1 November 2021 to 31 December 2023, including patients aged 18 and older diagnosed with SBO. Both groups received confirmation of their diagnosis through contrast-enhanced computed tomography. The two groups of patients (POCUS group vs. non-POCUS group) were compared regarding the time needed to reach the final diagnosis (i.e., time to diagnosis), the ED LOS, the hospital LOS, and in-hospital mortality. Results: A total of 106 patients were included. The median time to diagnosis was 121 min for the POCUS group vs. 217 min for the non-POCUS group (p < 0.001). Median ED processing time was 276 min in the POCUS group compared to 376 min in the non-POCUS group (p = 0.006). ED LOS was also shorter in the POCUS group (333 vs. 436 min, p = 0.010). Abdominal X-ray rates were lower in the POCUS group (49% vs. 78%, p = 0.004). Hospital LOS was similar between the two groups (p = 1.000). Five non-POCUS patients died during hospitalization; none died in the POCUS group, but the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.063). Conclusions: POCUS significantly reduced time to diagnosis and ED LOS. Further exploration is needed to assess long-term outcomes and the cost-effectiveness of integrating POCUS into ED practice

Mathematics is a universal science that supports the development of modern technology in various fields of science and encourages the development of human thinking. However, many students find mathematics difficult, and this view is often passed down from one generation to the next. Mathematics learning is often closely related to traditional educational processes, which ignore cultural context. Ethnomathematics exists as an approach that utilizes culture in learning mathematics. This research aims to explore the mathematical concepts contained in the typical food, Alame Padangsidimpuan. This research method uses an ethnographic approach by collecting primary data through observation, interviews and documentation, as well as secondary data through literature review. The research results show that Alame Padangsidimpuan contains mathematical concepts such as counting, elements of units, measurement, angles, comparisons, flat shapes, spatial shapes, and social arithmetic. It is hoped that this research can be a valuable reference in developing mathematics learning materials related to local culture, so that students can be more involved and enthusiastic in learning mathematics

Astarabadi and Alame Majlesi’s Faith Studies and the Mullasdra’s Impression on Alame’s thoughts

Ekhbarigari doctrine was founded by Astarabadi in 11th century of Hejirah As we will explain that he had a special theory in faith that Alame found it a very interesting subject to work on. We should know, Allame showed that he had the knowledge in faith studies from Astarabad’s theories but without all the ambiguities in them, he tried to work on making his theories clearer and more correct. So we can differenciate between Astarabadi and Allame’s theories in faith study and name the allame’s theory as a very special theory in Isfahan Ekhbarigari doctrine, but the most important thing that we try to discuss in this article is proving that Mullasadra has a very important part in balancing and moderating the Allame’s theories. So for saying and proving all these things we should start from a summary of the Astarabadi’s theories

Potential Flow in Flapping Wing Aerodynamics

Mentor: Krishnan MaheshMicro Air Vehicles (MAVs) have gained a large popularity and have seen potential for military purposes such as information gathering and hostile environment sensing. Although inspired by the biological dynamics of flapping wings, the wing kinematics, geometry and structure are very sensitive to the flight conditions, hence an understanding of those gives a more efficient approach at capturing the subtle design space. As far a human flapping wing flight is concerned it is still an elusive goal. Advances have been made and a lot was done through experimentation and computer aided simulations. So far it appears that experimentation has dominated the theoretical approach in which there is not yet a complete mathematical model that describes this sort of complex kinematics implicitly, and that is one barrier that must be overcome. This is where potential flow offers a low-fidelity mathematical model that will aim to describe such motion and capture the forces generated. This research was supported by the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP).Alame, Karim. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
