Combined PCL and PLC reconstruction in chronic posterolateral instability
The posterolateral corner (PLC) is more likely to be injured in combination with the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) or the anterior cruciate ligament than in isolation. This leads to instability of the knee and loss of function. We hypothesised that combined PCL and PLC reconstruction would restore sufficient stability to allow improvement in patient symptoms and function

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Indigenous knowledge & natural disaster preparedness in char land of Bangladesh
This dissertation is submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Development Studies, 2007.Cataloged from PDF version of dissertation.Includes bibliographical references (page 62- 66).Since the 1970s, evidence that local knowledge and practices can help implementing organisations to improve disaster preparedness activities has grown; notwithstanding this evidence, the marginalisation of local knowledge and practices by mainstream literature and institutions involved with disaster management continues.
A local knowledge system is composed of different knowledge types, practices and beliefs, values, and worldviews. Such systems change constantly under the influence of power relations and cross-scale linkages both within and outside the community. As such, local knowledge and practices need to be understood as adaptive responses to internal and external changes which result (or not) in disaster preparedness at local level. In order to identify local knowledge on disaster preparedness, one should locus on tour key aspects: people's ability to observe their local surroundings, people's anticipation of environmental indicators, people's adaptation strategies. and people's ability to communicate about natural disasters within the community and between generations. Overall, the ability a community has to prepare itself for disaster preparedness needs to be understood within the broader context of livelihood security and sustainability and building up community resilience in the long term.
I went to Kurigrarn to gather knowledge on the topic of my dissertation. After deciding my dissertation topic as 'Indigenous knowledge & disaster preparedness in char area of Bangladesh' I have already gone though few references, books, journals and periodicals. To understand more I have also gone through internet sites also. With the help of my respected supervisor and few other colleagues I have also talked with some knowledgeable persons who have been working in this field of indigenous knowledge & disaster preparedness. I have also talked with few people who have work experiences in char land, environment and climate change projects.
There has been a big difference of understanding between the theories you learned from books and works you do in the field in reality. If a researcher wants to dig through his/her research question to get the most accurate and true result, there is no other way to get it better than going to the field of reality. That is why my supervisor told me to go to the field as soon as possible to have field research. And as I was planning to go to Kurigram which would fulfill the research needs my supervisor was happy about my site selection also.Mohammad Shahriar IslamM. Development Studie
Web-based Resource Management System for Promoting Teaching and Learning: Bangladesh Perspectives
The adoption of digital communication media, particularly the Internet, has allowed the intellectual community to access and share knowledge to enhance research competency throughout the world. Technological advancement in the field of digital information networks facilitated information professionals to manage and access knowledge resources for research and development purposes. Web-based resource management system helps scholars to preserve their research output enabling other scholars to find required information timely and accurately. The aim of this research was to explore the current practices of web-based digital resource management system in Bangladesh in the context of global access to information and knowledge management. The study reviewed related literature published in various national and international journals and also other sources. Moreover, the study also consulted with relevant bibliographic databases especially OpenDOAR, DOAJ and ROAR. Result showed that in Bangladesh some educational, science and technology, agricultural, medical and medicine, social science and general research centre are already using and managing their in-born digital resources through their respective Institutional Repository (IR). Besides, a good number of organizations are trying to implement IR for their respective organization. The outcome of the study will be helpful for IR and non-IR providing organizations in Bangladesh to manage their digital resources more effectively aiming to promoting web-based teaching and learning
