The Duality of Voyeuristic and Phallocentric Tokens in K.S. Maniam’s “Mala”

    No full text
This paper attempts to examine the Notions of voyeuristic and phallocentric tokens in K.S. Maniam’s “Mala.” In essence, the study tries to scrutinize the inherent relationship between males and females through psychic drives. These drives are mainly motivated by social milieus which control the behaviors of males and females. Therefore, males and females abide by the social manners that make them different from each other. Accordingly, my study will analyze the characters of Maniam’s “Mala.” It will specifically concentrate on female behaviors and how they are depicted in a patriarchal way. Furthermore, the analysis will tackle Maniam’s notion of voyeuristic and phallocentric ideas projected in the story. These ideas are associated with feminism and gender studies that try to bridge the gap between males and females. In this respect, my study will analyze the female protagonist Mala that tries to be equal to men in her male-dominated society. The protagonist embodies Maniam’s critique of females and their inferiority to males. Moreover, the concepts of voyeurism and phallocentrism will be applied to explore the protagonist’s internal drives caused by traditional “feminist” domestic affairs

Determination of kinetic parameters from calorimetric study of solid state reactions in 7150 Al-Zn-Mg alloy

Differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) study was carried out at different heating rates to examine the solid statereactions in a 7150 Al-Zn-Mg alloy in water-quenched (WQ) state, naturally and artificially aged tempers. The exothermic and endothermic peaks of the thermograms indicating the solid state reaction sequence were identified. The shift of peak temperatures to higher temperatures with increasing heating rates suggests that the solid state reactions are thermally activated and kinetically controlled. The artificial aging behaviour of the alloy was assessed by measuring the variations of hardness with aging time. The fraction of transformation (Y), the rate of transformation (dY/dt), the transformation function f(Y), and the kinetic parameters such asactivation energy (Q) and frequency factor (k0) of all the solid state reactions in the alloy were determined by analyzing the DSC data, i.e. heat flow involved with the corresponding DSC peaks. It was found that the kinetic parameters of the solid state reactions are in good agreement with the published data.<br/

The minimum actuation voltage (Vact) of the prototype is 93 V, with a switching time taken from the down to up state (Trise) and from the up to down state (Tfall) of 105 ms and 26 ms respectively

The Experience of Discursive Problematization of the Axiomatics of Revolution (K.S. Aksakov)

    No full text
Introduction. This article discusses the ideas about the revolution, the Russian people and the state in the works of Konstantin Sergeevich Aksakov. K.S. Aksakov was a well-known Russian publicist, literary critic, poet and one of the main ideologists of Slavophilism. Over the years, many researchers of Russian philosophy and history have shown interest in his legacy, noting his originality and incredible love for Russia. The purpose of this article is to analyze and highlight the views of Konstantin Aksakov on the revolution - as a reflection on the events that took place in Europe and the Russian Empire during his life and work.Methodology and sources. The results of the study were based on the textual and conceptual analysis of the works of K.S. Aksakov. The main sources were journalistic notes, essays and letters. Results and discussion. Based on the analysis of historical and philosophical sources, the author of the article comes to the conclusion that for a comprehensive analysis and complete understanding of the idea of revolution in the works of K.S. Aksakov, it is necessary to closely study the key concepts of his philosophical views on Russia, the Russian people, the state and their relationship. Conclusion. For K.S. Aksakov's revolution is an exclusively Western phenomenon. The very idea of revolution is extraneous to the Russian people, since the Russian people themselves chose the state for themselves and entered into an equal alliance with it, seeking to protect themselves from any state activity in order to stay in the process of moral and spiritual improvement

Characterization of high pressure torsion processed 7150 Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy

Solution treated 7150 Al–Zn–Mg–Cu alloy samples were subjected to high pressure torsion (HPT) at room temperature and artificial ageing. Microhardness of HPT processed samples increases with distance from the centre, saturating near the edge of the disk. The hardness obtained through HPT processing is higher compared to that obtained by conventional solution treatment and artificially ageing of this high strength aluminium alloy. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed the sequence of solid state reactions occurring in the Al–Zn–Mg–Cu system, and the presence of β' (Al3Zr), η' (MgZn2) and η (MgZn2) phases, respectively. TEM of HPT processed samples revealed that the grains near the edge of the disk are finer compared to that near the centre of the disk. Electrochemical polarisation studies of the HPT processed 7150 alloy indicated open circuit potential (OCP) and corrosion potential (Ecorr) values are more negative (i.e. anodic), and corrosion current density (icorr) values are about one order higher than the values of artificially aged tempers

Rethinking identity through Hindu spirituality in K.S Maniam's novels

    No full text
In one of his essays, K.S Maniam, a Malaysian Literature in English author states that his literary works “attempt to bring the precision of the English language to the versatility and depth of Hindu mythology and spirituality” (“Fiction into Fact” 264). Despite his assertion, the role of Hindu spirituality in his works especially in relation to the Malaysian Indian identity construction remains little studied. Past studies tend to approach identity in Maniam’s works using the post-colonial theory and focus mainly on the politics of identity construction. Hitherto, the discussion of identity in Maniam’s works is limited to the political and sociological realms. Therefore, my thesis attempts to go beyond these realms by suggesting an alternative discourse of identity through spirituality. My central argument is that spirituality plays a significant role in identity construction in K.S Maniam’s novels. To address this, I employ Advaita Vedanta, an Indian philosophy as a theoretical framework in order to highlight an alternative rendering of identity in Maniam’s novels. Advaita Vedanta’s conception of identity rests on monistic and undifferentiated whole called Atman (True Self) which can only be achieved when a person transcends subject-object dichotomy. Advaita Vedanta’s accentuation of “non-duality” is revolutionary as it restructures the concepts relevant to identity such as one’s sense of selfhood, one’s relationship with the world, and one’s perception and experience of reality. I analyse all of Maniam’s novels which are The Return (1981), In a Far Country (1993), and Between Lives (2003) and show how his works reflect the philosophy of Advaita Vedanta. Maniam incorporates this Indian philosophy into his works by means of literary motifs such as self-reflexivity, rites-ofpassages, rituals, disruptions of temporal/spatial linearity, and mystical experiences. These motifs highlight how spirituality informs identity construction in Maniam’s novels. My thesis shows that spirituality in KS Maniam’s novels is transformative in three ways. Firstly, spirituality revolutionizes the way the characters perceive and comprehend the notion of “self” and “reality”. Secondly, spirituality depathologizes the characters’ existential crises. And thirdly, spirituality renews human relations as it emphasizes the importance of upholding moral and ethical duties, compassion, and empathy. To conclude this study, I reiterate that spirituality provides a more paradigmatic discourse of identity and at the same time allows K.S Maniam to articulate his creative and intellectual voice as a Malaysian Indian author

‘The physics you buy in supermarkets’: writing science for the general public : the case of Stephen Hawkings

    No full text
Following the fall of the great ideologies that informed the 19th and 20th century, science took their place in people’s imagery. In the same period, science and its corollary practical application – technology – underwent unprecedented developments, culminating in the rapid and ground-breaking advances of the past half century, with the notable prominence of the internet and all web-related technology. The general public can enjoy all the applied benefits of technology but not the research behind or beyond it: science has become a new religion, scientists a new caste. What happens when one of the caste opens up to the public? Between 1988 and 2010, the renowned British physicist Stephen Hawking wrote five popular science books aimed at bringing physics closer to a wider audience than the mere academia. The operation proved very successful – with his best-seller alone (A brief history of time, 1988) reported to have sold over 10 million copies (Paris 2007) – and made him into an acclaimed popular author. This study will consider Hawking’s books especially written for popularizing purposes, presenting reflections on the relationship between ESP, popularization and translation, and focusing in particular on Hawking’s first such work, A Brief History of Time, which was made into an even more popular adaptation titled A Briefer History of Time (2005) and translated, in both its versions, into Italian. The aim of the paper will be to detail how the subject has been adapted and transferred from a high into a popular (writing) and an even more popular (re-writing) level, and then into another language (translation), what relationship there is between these passages, and how Hawking’s book has affected the recent trend towards science popularization. This will be done by comparing the works against the general features of English for Scientific/Academic Purposes, to single out their variation from – or conformity to – the established norms of this specialized language, providing a textual analysis and highlighting relevant lexical and syntactic phenomena. An interpretation of such phenomena will be proposed according to Critical Discourse Analysis methodology, i.e. considering language in light of the many social, cultural and economic variables informing this type of communication
