Más allá de las fronteras. Ahmed Hassan Mattar y su activismo entre África y Sudamérica
The biography of Ahmed Hassan Mattar expressed the multiple identity lines assumed by those revolutionary cadres of the first decades of the 20th century, who emerged in a colonial and neocolonial world and developed their political activity in different settings and distant spheres of their own culture. The story of A. H. Mattar is, therefore, that of a militant and journalist of Sudanese origin who developed his political work in Africa, especially in Morocco, together with Abd el-Krim, the warlord of the Rif, as well as in European countries such as France and Germany, once incorporated into the Communist International. However, it would be in South America, in countries like Argentina, Brazil, and Chile, where he would stand out not only in anti-imperialist struggles but also as a chronicler and community leader of communities of Arab origin, even producing original empirical and statistical research. In sum, Mattar’s course can be seen as that of an activist who understood the social reality of a certain time and who assumed politics as a commitment to fight against colonialism and imperialism. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Adaptive Strategies for the development of the Port of Beirut and its neighborhood: The role of academic studios
In the aftermath of the devastating explosion in Beirut in August, 2020, many ideas for reconstruction surfaced in the media. These ideas, however, often hinged on old visions on the city and did not always have the best interests of the people living near the port in mind. In an interuniversity design studio project, master students of architecture at TU Delft proposed new visions. They are now on display in the virtual Adaptive Strategies Exhibition. In this blog, teachers Nadia Alaily-Mattar and John Hanna recount the importance of academic visions on planning in general, and on the reconstruction of the port city area in Beirut in particular
Marking a New Chapter in the History of our City. Newspaper Narratives of Proposed Waterfront Star Architecture
A recurrent claim associated with the development of star architecture buildings along new urban waterfronts is that star architecture’s capacity to garner media exposure can support a port city’s efforts to communicate narratives that support the process of urban transformation. However, despite the centrality of the role of the media, little evidence exists about the input of the media particularly in the inception phases of such projects where much of the legitimatization and conviction efforts by key actors takes place. This paper shows how newspaper narratives about star architecture proposed along the waterfront of a port city communicate transformation proposals, building on and propagating a sense of maritime belonging and culture. The case study presented is the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Germany. The findings are based on the content analysis of 420 newspaper articles, drawn from the LexisNexis database. The findings indicate that newspapers communicated the sense-making value of the Elbphilharmonie and introduced notions of identity, citizen identification and hanseatic particularity into the discourse. The newspapers played an important role in explaining the Elbphilharmonie as a symbol of the city’s commitment to the port, the maritime context and the Elbe River. Since narratives are constructed discursively, newspapers are a feasible site to investigate the ambitions of port cities as they invest in star architecture along their waterfronts
Acoustic Perception in Intelligent Vehicles using a single microphone system
Passive acoustic sensing utilizes the ability of sound to travel beyond the line-of-sight to understand the surroundings. This provides an advantage over the currently used sensors in Intelligent Vehicles that can sense obstacles within their line-of-sight only. Recently, a localization based approach has been implemented to take advantage of this sensing modality to predict approaching vehicles behind the blind corner in an urban scenario. While this approach shows a lot of promise, there is a difficulty in integrating the multi-microphone system. Additionally, the system would be unable to differentiate between the nature of two sound sources. This motivates the exploration of a classification based approach which uses audio data from only a single microphone to identify the sound sources present in them. This thesis investigates the possibility of having such a system on the Intelligent Vehicle to predict approaching vehicles from behind the blind corners. A review of the literature revealed that techniques categorized under Sound Event Detection (SED) are suitable to implement a classification based approach. The prediction of the vehicle is treated as a binary classification problem and a Convolutional Recurrent Neural Network (CRNN) is used as the acoustic model to detect the presence of an approaching car in the audio sample represented by Log Mel Spectrogram features. Additionally, domain adaptation techniques were implemented to explore the possibilityof improving the system performance with limited data collected while the ego-vehicle is driving. Experiments carried out indicate that when the ego-vehicle is static, the system performs well with the approaching vehicle predicted 1.4s before it is in line-of-sight and a balanced accuracy of 86.9% achieved for the classification task. However, the system achieved an accuracy of 68% on the samples recorded while the ego-vehicle was driving. Further experiments indicate that the acoustic model cannot generalize well to unseen situations in most cases and experiment with domain adaptation did not showany improvement in performance.Mechanical Engineering | Vehicle Engineerin
Silent citizens: state, citizenship and media in the Gulf
This thesis attempts to unravel the essence of the state in the Gulf Arab countries. The study's main argument is that the Gulf Emirates have been able to manipulate the oil wealth and create what appear to be modern states. The Gulf ruling families were confronted, however, with the dilemma of introducing the kind of civil society that accompanies modernity. They have been able to survive and legitimate their dominion by exploiting religion as the state ideology. Traditional patriarchal norms and cultures have been maintained by the ruling tribes in the Gulf. The issue of citizenship and citizens' rights has rarely been debated in regard to the Gulf. However, this is one of the main problems of the contemporary situation in the Gulf states. This study concentrates on this issue by means of a review of the media. The Gulf media have been utilised to promote the modem patriarchal structure of the state. The main body of the thesis examines the media in relation to two main issues: foreign workers in the Gulf and Gulf women. The final chapter of the thesis, however, exposes the fact that Gulf journalists themselves have no rights and that at times of crisis the tenuous autonomy they enjoy withers. A major crisis occurred very recently to reinforce this argument. The Iraqi invasion of Kuwait on 2 August 1990 and the deployment of foreign troops in the Gulf created a further complication for the Gulf ruling families. They were forced to allow foreign - mainly American and British journalists- to cover the war, but they compelled national reporters to use material which was filtered through the foreign press
Interdisciplinary pedagogies for regional development challenges: The re-coupling of planning, design, and the social sciences
To address regional development effectively, integrative strategies are needed based on interdisciplinary and even transdisciplinary thinking. To prepare professionals for this task it is crucial to look at higher education, in particular regional design education. Three key disciplines which have become separated need to be re-coupled: planning, design, and social sciences. To assess whether regional design education is capable to do so, this chapter first presents a method to make such an assessment possible. This is followed by an application of this method through an analysis of two regional design courses at Master’s level from TU Delft and TU Munich, specifically looking at the underlying pedagogical principles. Two main outcomes of the analysis are: 1) it does not seem to be necessary to have consecutive Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in order to understand and steer regional development; 2) it is necessary to prepare a variety of students from various disciplinary backgrounds for co-creation and cooperation. This leads to a number of follow-up questions, in particular in relation to the admission of students and the assessment of interdisciplinary learning.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Spatial Planning and Strateg
Stimulation of postprandial in vivo glycogenesis and lipogenesis of rats fed high fructose diet with varied phosphate content
It has been reported that increased fructose intake is associated with the development of the metabolic syndrome. The phosphate (P) sequestering capacity of fructose is likely to affect the phosphorylation capacity of different metabolites, and this, in turn, may be the basis for several metabolic derangements, especially in the P requiring reactions, for example, glycogenesis and lipogenesis. We hypothesized that P enrichment of the diet can balance P status and, consequently, affect glycogenesis and lipogenesis. An animal experiment was executed in which adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were maintained for 4 days on high-fructose diets with different P content (0.15percent, 0.165percent, 0.30percent, and 1.65percent). At the end of the feeding period, overnight fasted rats were tube fed a test meal, injected with 3H2O and euthanized 1 hour later. Final plasma glucose, insulin, uric acid, and triacylglycerol concentrations, as well as in vivo rates of glycogen and lipid synthesis and hepatic glycogen content, were measured. Results showed that increased P content of the diet was associated with an increase in postprandial epididymal fat pad (P = .007) and hepatic lipogenesis (P = .029), as well as glycogenesis (P = .024). In conclusion, P content of the diet was found to stimulate both glycogenesis and lipogenesis. These alterations in carbohydrate and fat metabolism point to the potential of P in influencing nutritional status. © 2010 Elsevier Inc.Bizeau ME, 2005, METABOLISM, V54, P1189, DOI 10.1016-j.metabol.2005.04.004; Bray GA, 2004, AM J CLIN NUTR, V79, P537; Choi HK, 2008, BRIT MED J, V336, P309, DOI 10.1136-bmj.39449.819271.BE; Chong MFF, 2007, AM J CLIN NUTR, V85, P1511; Elliott SS, 2002, AM J CLIN NUTR, V76, P911; FOX IH, 1972, METABOLISM, V21, P713, DOI 10.1016-0026-0495(72)90120-5; Friedman MI, 1999, AM J PHYSIOL-REG I, V276, pR1046; GABY AR, 2005, ALTERN MED REV, V10, P4; Griel AE, 2006, ARTERIOSCL THROM VAS, V26, P1958, DOI 10.1161-01.ATV.0000233384.97125.bd; HALLFRISCH J, 1990, FASEB J, V4, P2652; JAEDIG S, 1994, MINER ELECTROL METAB, V20, P147; Johnson RJ, 2007, AM J CLIN NUTR, V86, P899; Katsumata S, 2006, BIOSCI BIOTECH BIOCH, V70, P528, DOI 10.1271-bbb.70.528; Katsumata S, 2004, BIOSCI BIOTECH BIOCH, V68, P243, DOI 10.1271-bbb.68.243; Koshihara M, 2005, BIOSCI BIOTECH BIOCH, V69, P1025, DOI 10.1271-bbb.69.1025; Le KA, 2006, AM J CLIN NUTR, V84, P1374; MAENPAA PH, 1968, SCIENCE, V161, P1253, DOI 10.1126-science.161.3847.1253; MAYES PA, 1993, AM J CLIN NUTR S, V58, pS745; NAKAGAWA T, 2005, NAT CLIN PRACT NEPHR, V1, P2; Nakagawa T, 2006, AM J PHYSIOL-RENAL, V290, pF625, DOI 10.1152-ajprenal.00140.2005; Nazar K, 1996, J PHYSIOL PHARMACOL, V47, P373; Obeid OA, 2006, NUTRITION, V22, P794, DOI 10.1016-j.nut.2006.04.004; Obeid OA, 1997, NUTR CANCER, V28, P100; OBERHAENSLI RD, 1986, BRIT J RADIOL, V59, P695; Ohnishi Ritsuko, 2007, J Med Invest, V54, P366, DOI 10.2152-jmi.54.366; RAIVIO KO, 1969, BIOCHEM PHARMACOL, V18, P2615, DOI 10.1016-0006-2952(69)90192-0; SMITH CM, 1977, CAN J BIOCHEM CELL B, V55, P1237; Smith S, 1998, ENV NUTR, V11, P7; Tappy Luc, 1993, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, V58, p766S; VANDENBERGHE G, 1977, BIOCHEM J, V162, P601; WOODS HG, 1970, BIOCHEM J, V119, P501; Xie WS, 2000, BIOCHEM J, V352, P227, DOI 10.1042-0264-6021:352022722
