The spread of attention and learning in feature search: effects of target distribution and task difficulty
AbstractWe examined the roles of two determinants of spatial attention in governing the spread of perceptual learning, namely, stimulus location distribution and task difficulty. Subjects were trained on detection of a target element with an odd orientation imbedded in an array of light bars with otherwise uniform orientation. To assess the effects of target distribution on attention and learning, target positions were distributed so that attention was allocated not only to the target positions themselves, but also to intermediate positions where the target was not presented. Target detection performance substantially improved and improvement spread to match the induced window of spatial attention rather than only the actual target locations. To assess the effect of task difficulty on the spread of attention and learning, the target-distractor orientation difference and the time interval available for processing were manipulated. In addition, we compared performance of subjects with more versus with less detection difficulty. A consistent pattern emerged: When the task becomes more difficult, the window of attention shrinks, and learning becomes more localized. We conclude that task-specific spatial attention is both necessary and sufficient to induce learning. The spread of spatial attention, and thus of learning, is determined by the integrated effects of target distribution and task difficulty. We propose a theoretical framework whereby these factors combine to determine the cortical level of the focus of attention, which in turn enables learning modifications
View from the Top Hierarchies and Reverse Hierarchies in the Visual System
AbstractWe propose that explicit vision advances in reverse hierarchical direction, as shown for perceptual learning. Processing along the feedforward hierarchy of areas, leading to increasingly complex representations, is automatic and implicit, while conscious perception begins at the hierarchy's top, gradually returning downward as needed. Thus, our initial conscious percept—vision at a glance—matches a high-level, generalized, categorical scene interpretation, identifying “forest before trees.” For later vision with scrutiny, reverse hierarchy routines focus attention to specific, active, low-level units, incorporating into conscious perception detailed information available there. Reverse Hierarchy Theory dissociates between early explicit perception and implicit low-level vision, explaining a variety of phenomena. Feature search “pop-out” is attributed to high areas, where large receptive fields underlie spread attention detecting categorical differences. Search for conjunctions or fine discriminations depends on reentry to low-level specific receptive fields using serial focused attention, consistent with recently reported primary visual cortex effects

Reduced benefit from regularities in language among Dyslexics
The ”Anchoring Deficit” hypothesis (Ahissar et al., Nat Neurosci. 2006) proposed that Dyslexics have a difficultyin automatic extraction of simple stimulus regularities in sound sequences. JaffeDax et al. (J Neurosci. 2015) modelled thesedifficulties as yielding noisy priors.The current study was aimed to assess the impact of long-term regularities in language, which listeners had life long experi-ence with. Our assumption was that this familiarity would enhance Controls’ performance more than Dyslexics’ due to a noisierprior formation among Dyslexics. This question was addressed in a series of experiments - in each there was one condition forwhich information accumulated over the life span could be utilized.In all three experiments Dyslexics did not benefit as much as Controls from the long term statistics associated with the input.These results suggest that Dyslexics could not compensate for the deficit despite multiple exposures to lingual input with thesame statistics
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. In search for the relevant space of implicit memory deficit in dyslexia
Studies of dyslexics, whose implicit memory is impaired,suggest that their implicit inference of sound statistics and itsintegration into perception is inefficient. Specifically,dyslexics' implicit memory decays faster and consequentlyonly accumulates information over shorter temporal windows.We now ask whether this abnormal dynamic is domain generalby measuring its cortical distribution. We measure thedynamics of behavioral context effects and the concurrentneural adaptation during fast acquisition fMRI. We find asimilar pattern of fast decay of adaptation across a broad rangeof cortical areas, though most significant effects are found inauditory cortex. This broad neural distribution suggests that therelevant aspect of implicit statistical inferences is not the natureof stimuli, but their temporal distribution
Isolating the impact of visual perception on dyslexics’ reading ability
AbstractA large body of data suggests that phonological deficits play an important causal role in dyslexics’ reading difficulties. The functional role of visual impairments is still highly debated. Many recent studies have shown clear visual deficits in large subgroups of dyslexics. However, the relationship between these deficits and visual routines required for reading is not clear. To assess the direct contribution of visual factors to dyslexics’ slower and less accurate reading, we composed a task that was similar to single word reading in its basic visual characteristics, but had none of the other (phonological, morphological, semantic, etc.) aspects of reading. Young adult dyslexics, with average or above general cognitive abilities, and controls matched for age and cognitive skills participated in the study. We measured both SOA and contrast thresholds for identifying unfamiliar letters. Letters were chosen from an alphabet graphically similar to Hebrew and English (a subset of Georgian letters), but unfamiliar to the subjects. Effects of decreasing letter size, increasing letter crowding (by adding a flanker letter on each side) and adding white noise, were measured. Dyslexics performed as well as controls under all test conditions, and had similar effect sizes. We thus conclude that, despite the data showing that dyslexics have marked difficulties with single word reading, the cause of these difficulties is not a visual processing deficit
