Letter from David Bishop to the Order of United Americans in response to an invitation to a celebration of George Washington's birthday

    No full text
The Order of United Americans, also known as the Know-Nothings, formed in the mid-1800s to support the rights of native-born Americans over those of immigrants, and to combat what they saw as foreign influences on America. In this letter, David Bishop responds to decline an invitation to a celebration in honor of George Washington's birthday. He writes about his views on politics in America, and makes reference to German, Irish, and Catholic immigrants, as well as discusses his views on slavery. The fact that the letter has many phrases crossed out, has no closing, and is unsigned, suggested that it may have been a draft version. Pages 1-4 show the actual handwritten letter, while pages 5-6 provide transcripts of the letter
