Daughter of the Winds: How Scripture and the Holy Spirit Shape Perception in Spiritual Formation
Bibliography: pages 149-154.This research portfolio examines the role of the ministry of Scripture and the Holy Spirit in shaping the perception of believers. We interpret life according to our perception and this plays an important role in our spiritual formation in Christ. My research integrates the two kinds of wind (Scripture and the Holy Spirit), and perception in the process of spiritual formation in the life of the church and its leaders. I present this integration through three specific projects. The first project is my personal spiritual autobiography, which displays the role perception played in my own spiritual formation. The second project is a spiritual formation model that suggests how to influence perception so that spiritual formation in Christ may be enhanced, taking the believer from a blurred perspective to a clear perception of reality. The third project is the implementation of that model within the leadership team of my church in Hyderabad, India, demonstrating how participating in Scripture and the Holy Spirit can clarify perception of the visible and invisible realms. In sum, the role perception and the winds of God play in the holistic process of spiritual formation is developed through the project. I engage with perception from a theological perspective through the work of Phillip Blond, the ministry of Scripture and Holy Spirit, as well as Joseph Hellerman’s writing on church as a spiritual family. My research integrates three elements—perception, the winds of God, and the church— together into a model for spiritual formation and demonstrates its effectiveness through the research project in City Harvest Assemblies of God church in Hyderabad, India.Thesis (D. Knowing God: Restoring Spiritual Vitality Among New African Immigrants to Canada
Bibliography: pages 174-178.In this Research Portfolio, the author examines the practice of personal and communal prayer to enhance spiritual vitality and deepen believers' intimacy with God. The author presents this topic through three means. First, the author explores aspects of his personal spiritual journey through a spiritual autobiography. The autobiographical chapter highlights God’s work in the author’s life. Born and raised in a Muslim-dominated community with only a scant place of worship, God's mercies nurtured and sustained him through childhood and adulthood. Secondly, the Model chapter highlights the decline in spiritual fervour among African immigrant believers in my Church – Healing Stream Centre, Kitchener, Ontario. This Model examines some of the factors contributing to the decline of spiritual vitality among these believers, specifically within the African immigrants with Pentecostal-Charismatic framework and discusses various spiritual disciplines through which the Holy Spirit works to transform the lives of His people. Finally, the author reports on a project conducted with the Healing Stream Centre’s leadership teams in Kitchener, Ontario. The project explored using the biblical strategy of prayer— Divine Hours prayer and Lectio Divina to restore spiritual vitality to a church where most of the members are recent immigrants. Overall, the outcome of this project was positive.
The research suggests that prayer, as one of the spiritual disciplines, enhances participants' deepening experience, strengthens their devotion to God, and facilitates their spiritual vitality.Thesis (D. Investigating the Impact of Faith on Intrusive Thinking and Guilt
Bibliography: pages 44-51.Intrusive thoughts, experienced by over 90% of people (Hale & Clark, 2013), disrupt the normal flow of thinking and are present in both clinical and non-clinical populations. To gain greater insight into the nature of intrusive thoughts, the concept of thought-action fusion (TAF) was the focus of this study. Existing research suggests a positive correlation between religiosity and TAF, and this study hypothesized that higher religiosity would be associated with stronger TAF beliefs. In a survey of 258 individuals, a significant link was found between participants’ religiosity and their TAF morality subscale scores, indicating that participants who valued religion were also more concerned about the real-life outcomes of their thoughts. Additionally, among those with more liberal religious beliefs, a stronger centrality of religion was correlated to a stronger belief that their thoughts influenced others. These findings suggest that religious teachings emphasize concepts like “sin by thought,” which reinforces the belief that one’s thoughts hold the same moral weight as their actions. Clinicians should be aware of the role that religion plays in the mental processes of their clients, and should be equipped with the proper thought management techniques to address TAF accordingly. Furthermore, those with liberal religious beliefs may be more concerned with how their thoughts and actions impact others as opposed to those with conservative beliefs. Future research should explore how TAF is expressed across more diverse religious populations compared to one that is primarily Christian, as well as investigate additional factors, such as religious fundamentalism, that may influence TAF.Thesis (BA Honours)--Tyndale University, 2025For AODA Accommodation, including help with reading this content, please contact [email protected](no table of contents in thesis
