    Nach dem Autor vorliegendem noch sehr lückenhaften und zumeist von alten Museumsbälgen stammenden Material werden die folgenden auf dem Braunbrusttalegalla Aepypodius bruijnii (Oustalet, 1880) nachgewiesenen Federlinge beschrieben: die Amblyceren Kelerimenopon aepypodi Price & Emerson, 1966 sensu lato und Talegalligogus wilhelmi waigeuensis n. ssp. und die Ischnoceren Megathellipeurus mumesensis n. sp., „Oxylipeurus“ aepypodius Clay, 1938, Talegallipeurus tenuis Mey, 1983, Weehalia hakalphilus n. sp. und Homocerus sp. Diese Arten weisen auf enge verwandtschaftliche Beziehungen ihrer Wirtsgattungen Aepypodius und Talegalla, denen Alcetura ferner steht. These species illustrate the close relationships between their host genera Aepypodius and Talegalla, and suggest that Alectura is more distantly related.     Molecular evolution and phylogenetics of circular single-stranded DNA viruses

    Viruses infect a wide variety of hosts across all domains of life. Despite their ubiquity, and a long history of virus research, fundamental questions such as what constitutes a virus species, and how viruses evolve and are modeled, have yet to be adequately answered. We compared viral sequences across five genomic architectures (single- and double-stranded DNA and RNA) and demonstrate the presence of substitution bias, especially in single-stranded viruses. Most striking is a consistent pattern of over-represented cytosine-to- thymine substitutions in single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) viruses. This led us to question the validity of using time-reversible nucleotide substitution models in viral phylogenetic inference, as these models assume equal rates of forward and reverse substitutions. We found that an unrestricted substitution model fit the data better for most single- and double-stranded viral datasets, as measured by corrected Akaike Information Criterion, and hierarchical likelihood ratio test scores. We also approached the question of virus species identification by examining members of the most species-rich viral genus Begomovirus (Family Geminiviridae), which are circular single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) viral crop pathogens transmitted by whitefly vectors. We used novel sweet potato-infecting begomoviruses (sweepoviruses) collected during a recent vector-enabled metagenomic survey to evaluate the concept of pairwise percent nucleotide identity threshold as a criterion for species demarcation. We demonstrate that species demarcation based on pairwise percent nucleotide identities group divergent sweepovirus clusters together, and is highly influenced by when, and how much sampling occurs.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Yee Mey Sea

    Improved Generalization in Semi-Supervised Learning: A Survey of Theoretical Results

    Semi-supervised learning is the learning setting in which we have both labeled and unlabeled data at our disposal. This survey covers theoretical results for this setting and maps out the benefits of unlabeled data in classification and regression tasks. Most methods that use unlabeled data rely on certain assumptions about the data distribution. When those assumptions are not met, including unlabeled data may actually decrease performance. For all practical purposes, it is therefore instructive to have an understanding of the underlying theory and the possible learning behavior that comes with it. This survey gathers results about the possible gains one can achieve when using semi-supervised learning as well as results about the limits of such methods. Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions: what are, in terms of improving supervised methods, the limits of semi-supervised learning? What are the assumptions of different methods? What can we achieve if the assumptions are true?     Machine learning and artificial intelligence models that interact with and in an environment will unavoidably have impact on this environment and change it. This is often a problem as many methods do not anticipate such a change in the environment and thus may start acting sub-optimally. Although efforts are made to deal with this problem, we believe that a lot of potential is unused. Driven by the recent success of predictive machine learning, we believe that in many scenarios one can predict when and how a change in the environment will occur. In this paper we introduce a blueprint that intimately connects this idea to the multiagent setting, showing that the multiagent community has a pivotal role to play in addressing the challenging problem of changing environments.Interactive Intelligenc
