Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Analisis penggunaan bahasa sms ucapan selamat Idul Fitri 2011
The study discusses Short Message Services (SMS’s) used to express “Happy Idul Fitri” in relation to politeness principle and cooperative principle. The aims of the research are (1) to describe the way of writing the SMS’s, (2) to explain the sentence variety of the SMS’s, (3) to describe the language used in the SMS’s, (4) to explain the variety of relation between the writers and the reader of the SMS’s, and (5) to describe communicative act found in the SMS’s. This research is descriptive-qualitative in nature. The data are 54 SMS’s used to express “Happy Idul Fitri” in 2011. The SMS’s were received by the reseacher from her friends and colleagues. All of the SMS’s were analyzed to reveal the five aims of the research as stated above. The expressions of “Happy Idul Fitri” are found in the initial, middle, and final parts of the SMS’s. Some of them made use of associative language. Due to their variety, the sentences applied in the SMS’s expressing “Happy Idul Fitri” are (1) declarative, (2) imperative, and (3) exclamatory. The languages used in the SMS’s include (1) Indonesian, (2) Indonesian-Arabic, (3) Indonesian-Javanese, (4) Javanese, (5) Indonesian-English, and (6) Indonesian-Arabic-English. While, the relations between the writers and the reader of the SMS’s are of five kinds, namely (1) intimate parallel, (2) respectful parallel, (3) lower respectful writers, (4) lower intimate writers, and (5) neutral parallel. The variety of communicative act used in the SMS’s comprises (1) to express “Happy Idul Fitri”, (2)to apologize, (3) to expect, and (4) to thank
Analisis tuturan bermuatan pencemaran nama baik dalam facebook
The purpose of this study was to know and to describe (1) the type of speech, (2) the linguistic unit of speech markers, and (3) the violation of courtesy principles in speech containing defamation in Facebook. This study was qualitative descriptive research with the data of speech from two Facebook accounts. The data were analyzed by the techniques of substitution, expansion, and paraphrase. The results of this study showed that (1) there were types of direct and indirect speech, (2) there were eleven linguistic units as the markers of defamation, namely 9 sentences, 1 phrase, and 1 word, and (3) there was a violation of the politeness principle to the tact maxim, the generosity maxim, the sympathy maxim, and the agreement maxim
PERBANDINGAN BAHASA SURAT PEMBACA DALAM MAJALAH KAWANKU DAN HAI
The background of this research was due to the fact that communication processes involve two sides – speakers and hearers, in which the delivered massages are tied within discourses. Letters from readers, as a means used by readers to express “something†to mass-media management or other readers, are in line with mass-media characteristics. “Kawankuâ€, a magazine for female teenagers with its motto: “unbeatable fun girl†and “Haiâ€, a magazine for male teenagers with its motto: “karena kita luar biasa†have certain similarities and differences in their language use. This study aimed to compare the topic, language use, and communicative acts in letters from readers found in the magazines “Kawanku†and “Haiâ€. The research was descriptive in nature. It described the data – 60 letters from readers in Chit-Chat “Kawanku†and 58 letters from readers in Memo “Haiâ€, which comprised 10 editions of each magazine namely, no. 40 up to no. 49 published in September – Desember 2007. The data analysis showed (1) due to the topic, domestic artists/celebrities and foreign music groups were dominant in “Kawankuâ€; while, opinions and the contents of the magazine were dominant in “Hai", (2) concerning the language use, especially the orthographic writings, the titles of the letters in “Kawanku†were written in small letters; whereas, those in “Hai†were written in capital letters; the use of colloquial language was of no distinction in the two magazines; the use of abbreviations and acronyms in “Hai†was striking, such as SMS; the use of foreign language was rather different in the two magazines. Japanese was used in “Kawankuâ€, but “emoticons†was used in “Haiâ€, (3) in relation to communicative acts, courtesy was maintained in “Kawankuâ€; it was realized with opening and closing greetings; meanwhile, in “Hai†the intention of letters was stated straightforwardly and there were criticisms as well as severe complaints

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
