    Post combustion capture of carbon dioxide through hydrate formation in silica gel column

    Carbon dioxide CO₂capture through hydrate formation is a novel technology under consideration as an efficient means of separating CO₂from flue/fuel gas mixtures for sequestration and enhanced oil recovery operations. This thesis examines post-combustion capture of CO₂from fossil-fuel power plant flue-gas streams through hydrate formation in a silica gel column. Power plant flue-gas contains essentially CO₂and nitrogen (N2) after suitable pre-treatment steps, thus a model flue-gas comprising 17% co₂and 83% N2 was used in the study. Previous studies employed a stirred-tank reactor to achieve water-gas contact for formation of hydrates; recent microscopic studies involved using water dispersed in silica gel to react with gas, showing potential for improved hydrate formation rates without the need for agitation. This study focuses on macroscopic kinetics of hydrate formation in silica gel to evaluate hydrate formation rates, CO₂separation efficiency and determining optimal silica gel properties as a basis for a CO2 capture process. Spherical silica gels with 30.0 and 100.0 nm pore sizes and 40-75 and 75-200 μm particle sizes were studied to determine pore size and particle size effects on hydrate formation. 100.0 nm pores achieved higher gas uptake and CO₂recovery over the 30.0 nm case. Improved CO₂separation was obtained when 75-200 μm particles with 100.0 nm pores were used. The two effects observed are due to improved gas diffusion occurring with larger pore and particle size, favouring increased hydrate formation. Compared to stirred-tank experiments, results in this study show a near four-fold increase in moles of gas incorporated in the hydrate per mole of water, showing that improved water-to-hydrate conversion is obtained with pore-dispersed water. At similar experimental conditions, CO₂recovery improved from 42% for stirred-tank studies to 51% for the optimum silica (100.0 nm 75-200 μm) determined in this study. Finally, effects of tetrahydrofuran (THF) - an additive that reduces operating pressure were evaluated. Experiments with 1 mol% THF, the optimum determined from previous stirred tank studies, showed improved gas consumption in silica but reduced CO₂recovery, indicating that the optimum concentration for use in silica is different from that in stirred-tank experiments.Applied Science, Faculty ofChemical and Biological Engineering, Department ofGraduat

    Valuers’ perception of the Relative Influence of Sustainability Features in Nigerian Property Valuation

    Purpose- This study explores the perceptions held by Estate Surveyors and Valuers (ESVs) in Lagos regarding the influence of sustainability features (SFs) in property valuation and also ascertains if the influence differs in residential accommodation and commercial office space valuation. Methodology- Multiple choice and Likert scale questionnaires were randomly administered to 198 valuers representing 50% of the ESVs in Lagos as contained in the current NIESV directory. To ascertain their perception and determine variations in influence across the two property types, ranking was done on a Likert scale of 1-5 and paired sample t-test was used respectively. The data obtained was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings- Access to transportation emerged as the highest-rated sustainability feature (SF) influencing residential property valuation with a mean rating of 4.14, followed closely by durable materials (4.02) and space efficiency (3.81). Commercial properties mirrored nearly the same perception, with access to transportation, use of durable materials, and space efficiency receiving mean ratings of 4.19, 4.07, and 3.9 respectively. Findings reveal a calculated emphasis on location, material quality and cost which contradicts Western prioritization of energy efficiency. Nine out of the 26 sustainability features emerged with p-values less than 0.05 establishing a variance on the influence of some sustainability features across the two property types. Notably, there is a perceived higher influence of these SFs in residential property valuation. Research limitations- The issue of reluctance among the target population to allocate sufficient time for survey participation is a major barrier, leading to a retrieval rate of 58%. Theoretical/Social/Practical implications – The findings bring to focus the considerations that can shape property valuations in Lagos. Ultimately, the incorporation of a sustainability premium into rental or capital valuation will provide valuable insights for developers, policymakers and other investors in sustainable buildings.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
