Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Building Server Capabilities - Company Level Innovation and Innovation Management in China
The twenty-first century is the century of the emerging economies, both in market growth and, just as importantly, in changes to business strategy. Rapid market growth is now experienced and the multinationals are reacting to the market by developing products to the taste of the local requirements. How to develop the capabilities needed in the subsidiaries of multinational companies in order to fit their business strategies and to serve the markets appropriately poses challenges, and the study is an effort to unravel solutions to these challenges while helping managers to find suitable rationale for their decision making in encouraging operation activities in China. I will contribute scientifically to the discussion by developing theory on server capabilities considering the relationships and differences between the case companies
Building server capabilities:Trajectories and contextual Implications
Many western companies have moved part of their operations to China in order to take advantage of cheap resources and/or to gain access to a high potential market. Depending on motive, offshore facilities usually start either as “sales-only” of products exported by headquarters or “production-only”, exporting parts and components back to headquarter for sales in the home country. In the course of time, the role of offshore subsidiaries in a company’s operations network tends to change and, with that, the capabilities, of the subsidiaries. Focusing on Danish subsidiaries in China, the objective of this project is to identify and explain trajectories of offshore subsidiary capability development. The domain of inquiry is defined as value chain capabilities. Given the nature of this objective the chief methodology is longitudinal, partly retrospective, partly real-time, case studies
Sourcing Excellence
Sourcing Excellence is one of the key performance indicators (KPIs) in this world of ever changing sourcing strategies. Manufacturing companies need to access and diagnose the reliability and competencies of existing suppliers in order to coordinate and develop them. This would help in managing their relationships through the sharing and diversification of knowledge and skills. Meanwhile, this research will also strengthen the collaboration of researchers in the field of operations management to ascertain and adopt the right development tools for specific or groups of suppliers in manufacturing companies. In essence, this would allow the deployment of both internal and external skills and competencies to determine the new approaches towards organizing, supporting and improving supplier driven innovations (SDI) and supplier relationship management (SRM). This is to achieve operational excellence in manufacturing companies. In addition, an advanced approach to sourcing involves integrating and coordinating suppliers, common materials, processes, designs and technologies across worldwide buying, design and operating locations. However, since most manufacturing companies do not have well-developed suppliers for global sourcing strategies in place, improvement opportunities in this area are attractive and as yet largely unrealized. Shifting from a narrow, cost-reduction emphasis with suppliers to an emphasis on globally integrated and coordinated sourcing strategies with well-developed suppliers would improve the competitiveness of manufacturing companies (7). Over the last couple of years, supplier’s development is an evolution in supply chain management and there is a growing interest in generating approaches for meaningful development of suppliers and SDI. This would allow businesses to snatch long-term strategic initiatives by developing effective partnerships with suppliers (9). Meanwhile, this is useful in gaining the short term quick win benefits while focussing on the strategies for deriving additional value in the long term. Identifying the barriers, best practices and potential benefits of integrating the models of JIT sourcing and global sourcing would also add value and enhance excellent sourcing practices. These and other possibilities of sourcing would be considered in this research
MANAGING TRANSITION PROCESSES OF MANUFACTURING NETWORKS OF GLOBAL OPERATIONS
Western companies have now started to compete on the basis of value delivered by shifting their market focus from manufacturing to more product-service oriented systems. This is linked to the view that manufacturing companies are becoming more oriented to the use of the product-service offering rather than the pure product. Incidentally, products and services are often inseparable and the sale of a product would lead to a relationship where services could be sold over an extended period of time (Levitt, 1983). Thereby, many manufacturers have sought growth through the increased sale of products-services offerings. Localizing and globalizing these products-services offerings have inherent complexities which have been under researched. Facing the intense global competition, companies are seeking higher levels of efficiency and effectiveness by configuring their discrete value-added activities on a global scale and utilizing the best locations for these activities

MANAGING TRANSITION PROCESSES OF MANUFACTURING CONFIGURATIONS OF GLOBAL OPERATIONS
Exploration and exploitation excellence is one of the ways of satisfying today’s, tomorrow’s and future customers. Bolwijn and Kumpe (1998) explained that efficiency, quality, flexibility, speed and innovativeness are necessary in order to achieve exploration and exploitation excellence. Facing the intense global competition, companies are seeking higher levels of efficiency and effectiveness by configuring their discrete value-added activities on a global scale and utilizing the best locations for these activities. The trend in the operations of western companies has evolved from domestic market sales and export to offshoring. Export became necessary in order to meet the demand of customers who are willing to pay for a product or service globally. However, export was reduced as a result of the possibility to exploit the opportunity of low cost of production and to harness cheap resources related benefits by offshoring activities. As a result of offshoring and outsourcing, manufacturing activities kept in-house in western companies have reduced and has led to a situation where western companies now embed themselves in emerging markets to harness maximum benefits along products life cycle. Hence, what is offered (product or service innovation), the creation and delivery of products and services (process innovation) and to whom they are offered (market innovation) with the organization and management of the processes involved (people and organizational innovation) together with the creative recombination of existing techniques, ideas or methods (synthetic innovation) will be adopted in this study to manage the transition processes of manufacturing configurations
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
