Over time, there has been the alternative metrics complementing the traditional citation counts in scientometrics. The awareness, knowledge and use of these altmetrics tools in measuring research impact are unknown among Nigerian librarians. Hence, this study examined the awareness, knowledge and use of altmetrics as measure of research impact by Nigerian librarians. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study and total population sampling technique was adopted. Web-based questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. Two hundred and eighty-five responses were collected from the participants. The findings of the study show that most Nigerian librarians were not aware of altmetrics as non-traditional complement to traditional citation count. Results show that Nigerian librarians did not use altmetrics for measuring their research impact. It was shown that there was inadequate knowledge of altmetrics and it was unpopular among Nigerian librarians in measuring research impact. It was found that there was no statistically positive significant (r = .482**; P \u3c .022) relationship between awareness and use of altmetrics to measure research impact by Nigerian librarians. Results show that there was no statistically positive significant (r = .374**; P \u3c .039) relationship between librarians’ knowledge and use of altmetrics to measure research impact. It was concluded that that most Nigerian librarians use Twitter to seek altmetrics compared to other social media networks such as Facebook and LinkedIn which have very minimal usage

Nigeria Copyright Commission is saddled with the responsibility of ensuring adherence to the copyright law in Nigeria. However, it has been observed in the last decade that copyright right issue is still rampant in Nigeria. Therefore, this study analyzed cases that the Commission in involved in between years 2008 to 2018. The study adopted citation analysis and mixed method research. The study collected data from three selected law reports, which include Intellectual Property Law Reports, Nigerian Weekly Law Reports and Nigeria Law Intellectual Property Watch. It was found that Nigerian Law Intellectual Property Watch has the highest number of reports of cases involving Nigerian Copyright Commission while none was reported by Nigerian Weekly Law Reports. It was also found that most of the cases handled by the Commission were on copyright infringement. The study concludes that Nigerian Copyright Commission has been paying credible attention to issue that surrounds software infringement but there has been little attention paid to book piracy. Moreover, it was established that the poor attention given to book piracy may entrench the publication of pirated copy and would subsequently lead to poor library service provision at the long run.URL: http://ijkcdt.net/xml/22688/22688.pd

Abstract This study examined the information literacy level among secondary school students in Ilorin. This study adopted the disproportionate stratified random sampling techniques. The total population for this study 1958 students. The data for the study was collected through structured questionnaires which were distributed randomly to 210 students. However, only 192 copies of the questionnaire were properly filled and returned for analysis and thus form the basis as sample for this study (N=192). The findings of the study revealed that more than half of the respondents can identify lack of knowledge in a subject area. The study also revealed that majority of the respondents can articulate current knowledge on a topic. Furthermore, it also revealed that a large number of the respondents cannot identify specialist search tools. Also, from the study, it was revealed that noteworthy numbers of the respondents do not use Boolean operators in their search for information. Conclusively, the study shows that information literacy skills are essential for every human being because information is vital to everyone and every walk of life. It was recommended that policy makers in education sector should try and introduce information literacy skills as a subject in the secondary school curriculum so as to ensure that the students have the necessary information literacy skills rather than developing these skills through self-education. It was also recommended that teachers that have skills in information literacy skills should be employed as the facilitators in this subject

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

This study examined the influence of marketing on use of library services by postgraduate students in two federal universities in Nigeria. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The population comprises of 12,386 master degree student and 122 library personnel at University of Ibadan and University of Ilorin, Nigeria. The multi-stage sampling technique was used to select the sample size of 326 master’s degree students and total enumeration sampling technique was used for the library personnel. Hence, 326 copies of questionnaire were administered on the samples. However, only 309 students and 88 library personnel returned their copies filled and validated for the study, which represents 94.8% of the population of students and 72.1% of library personnel. Findings revealed that library personnel in the university libraries provide photocopying, literature search, current awareness services, circulation of periodical contents, newspaper clippings, reference service, notification about conferences/seminars/workshops, among others to postgraduate students. It was shown that the postgraduate students regularly used circulation of periodical contents and reference services daily. The methods of marketing adopted by the library personnel include: library website, university/library bulletin, lecturers, notice board, newspaper, text message (SMS), among others. The study established that there is a significant relationship (r = .438**; p \u3c 0.05) between library marketing and library services provision in two federal universities in Nigeria. Similarly, there is a significant relationship (r = .466**; p \u3c 0.05) between library marketing strategies used for postgraduate students and their use of library services in two federal universities in Nigeria. The study results show that marketing influences use of library services in the two federal universities in Nigeria. It was therefore recommended that librarians should improve on the strategies for library marketing to enhance their services

This study examined perceived usefulness and ease of use as predictors of early-year lawyers’ satisfaction with Law Pavilion Electronic Law Reports (LPELR). Descriptive survey design was adopted and questionnaire was the instrument used to collect data. Total population sampling was adopted to select sample size. A total of 300 copies of questionnaires were administered on the respondents. However, only 248 copies were returned completely filled and validated for the study. The Cronbach alpha reliability for the study is 0.782. It was found that there is strong positive relationship between perceived ease of use and perceived satisfaction and that there is positive relationship between perceived usefulness and perceived satisfaction. The study findings show that electronic law reports are easy to use and useful for early-year lawyers in their legal research. The study concludes that, as much as the law profession is conservative in nature, the use of e-law reports is making inroads to the profession. It was recommended that technical service provision by LPELR should be improved significantly. Above all, electronic law reports licensors should ensure that task importance of electronic law reports is given utmost consideration when they are designing the system qualities of e-law reports

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
