Reservoir characterization in frontier basins remains a challenge for exploration efforts. The Levant Basin, located in the easternmost part of the Mediterranean region, represents a frontier basin that is extensively mapped in terms of seismic survey but lacks well log calibration. The sparse data coverage results in substantial uncertainties in seismic interpretation and evaluation of reservoir properties. In the absence of well data, outcrop analogues can play a key role in the characterization of subsurface carbonate platforms. The main objective of this thesis is to characterize a large-scale Cenomanian – Turonian carbonate platform located northern Lebanon based on integrating sedimentological characterization with geophysical and petrophysical measurements. The investigation of the onshore analogue outcrop allows to constrain the carbonate platform’s properties on onshore seismic data. The developed approach is first applied to the Mid – Late Bathonian limestones of Massangis quarry (Oolithe Blanche formation), representing an analogue of the geothermal reservoir targeted by many municipalities in the Ile-de-France region. Sedimentologic description is completed for the studied outcrop and petrographic analysis is accomplished for representative samples. A total of 1000 acoustic velocities are acquired at 40 kHz to generate a 2D synthetic seismogram. The sedimentologic and acoustic characterization of the section allows to understand the influence of facies variation and diagenetic features (firm grounds, bioturbation, stylolites, etc) on the acoustic measurements and the generation of seismic reflectors. The studied outcrop in Kfarhelda northern Lebanon is a Cenomanian – Turonian shallow marine carbonate platform representing Sannine and Maameltain formations. The formations represent bedded limestones with important Turonian rudist-rich rudstones. A thorough sedimentary description is completed for the 400 m-thick carbonate platform. P-wave velocity is acquired directly on the outcrop, and the petrophysical properties are measured on 44 representative samples. The data are used to generate a 1D synthetic seismogram with a 25 Hz Ricker wavelet. The resulting reflectors are mainly (1) high amplitude reflectors at the limit between two facies with contrasting physical properties enhanced by diagenesis, (2) moderate amplitude reflectors corresponding to stratigraphic limits at the transition between facies, and (3) very low amplitude reflectors in karstified units. The integration of outcrop and seismic data is based on the generation of the synthetic seismogram. Interpretation and seismic facies analysis are completed for the 2D onshore seismic profile acquired in 2013. The best fit between the synthetic seismic and seismic profile resulted in the identification of two distinctive reflectors related to the Marly Limestone Zone causing sharp contrast in acoustic impedance, and the overlying channel facies characterised by higher porosity. The approach developed in this thesis work highlights the importance of combining sedimentologic and acoustic measurements together with synthetic seismic modelling to identify the geological origin of seismic reflectors and improve the seismic interpretation in terms of facies and reservoir properties

Nearly 60 % of the Earth surface is composed by basaltic rocks which form the upper part of the oceanic crust. These PhD works focus on the elastic properties of basalt at several spatial scales : field scale, sample scale and porosity microstructure scale. With its active hydrothermalism Iceland appears as the ideal natural laboratory to study the interactions existing between basalts, fluids and fracturing at a large scale. We first begin by the study of a paleosite of hydrothermal fluid flow which took place in a basaltic pile. Some evidence of hydrofracturing are identified. We also investigate the porosity of the different materials associated to the hot fluid flow. The second part of the field study is based on microseismicity surveys on the Reykjanes Peninsula which is an active area in Iceland. The most important results is those deduced from inverting the tomography data obtained by C. Dorbath in 2005. By applying an effective medium theory to seismic velocities we have attempted to estimate the crack density and aspect ratio of the Icelandic crust at this place. We have show that areas characterized by a strong P-waves velocities anomaly were characterized by high crack density and low aspect ratio at 6 km depth. We have also investigated the effect of the fluid compressibility on the crack parameters with depth. The sample scale is investigated through two studies. The first one is the investigation of three different modes of deformation in an Icelandic basalt by using laboratory seismological tools (elastic waves and acoustic emissions) and scan imaging. first of all we show that at low effective pressure (5 MPa) an axial loading induces a shear failure in the basalt with a classical angle of about 45°. On the contrary at higher effective pressures (75 MPa and more) an increasing of the axial stress induces a localization of the deformation in the centre part of the sample. Focal mechanisms of the acoustic emissions reveal an important part of compression events (mode I rupture) suggesting pore collapse mechanisms. Such compaction structures are usually obtained for porous rocks (20-25 %). And yet the investigated basalt has an intact total porosity of about 10 %. Then the size of the equant porosity and its ratio with grain size can be involved for explaining the pore collapses. Finally the third triaxial experiment is an induced fluid pressure failure from a high confining pressure state (80 MPa). A large shear plane failure is formed due to pore pressure increasing the local porosity of about 1 %. The second sample scale study is based on the porosity scale in order to investigate the frequency effect on elastic moduli. To obtain experimental data we performed hydrostatic experiments on an Icelandic basalt specimen under both dry and saturated conditions. This basalt is characterized by a bimodal porosity, i.e., cracks and equant pores. The elastic properties -bulk moduli in our case- were investigated under high pressure through two experimental methods : (1) a classical one using ultrasonic P- and S-waves velocities (frequency 106 Hz), (2) and a new one, using oscillation tests (frequency 102 Hz). In dry condition, experimental data show no significant difference between high (HF) and low (LF) frequency bulk moduli. However, in saturated conditions, two effects are highlighted : a physico-chemical effect emphasized by a difference between drained and dry moduli, and a squirt-flow effect evidenced by a difference between HF and LF undrained moduli. The experimental approach was completed by a theoretical study. The HF moduli are derived from a new effective medium model with an isotropic distribution of pores and cracks with idealized geometry, respectively spheres and ellipsoids. LF moduli are obtained by taking HF dry moduli from the model and substituting into Gassmann's equations. In the case of a porosity only supported by equant pores, the calculated dispersion in elastic moduli is equal to zero. In the case of a crack porosity, no bulk dispersion is predicted but a shear dispersion appears. Finally in the general case of a mixed porosity (pores and cracks), dispersion in bulk and in shear is predicted. Our results show that the maximum dispersion is predicted for a mixture of spheroidal pores and cracks with a very small aspect ratio (<10-3). Our theoretical predictions are compared to experimental data and a good agreement is observed. We also used our theoretical model to predict elastic waves velocities and Vp/Vs ratio dispersion. We show that the P-waves dispersion can reach almost 20 % and the Vp/Vs dispersion a maximum value of 9 % for a crack porosity of about 2 %. Since laboratory data are ultrasonic measurements and field data are obtained at much lower frequencies, these results are useful for geophysicists to interpret seismic data in terms of fluid and rock interactions.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

3D Geological and Geophysical Characterization of a Natural Hydrogen Reservoir System : a Case Study of the Bourakèbougou Field, Mali

In the race to find clean and inexpensive ways to produce hydrogen, the natural hydrogen wells of Bourakèbougou offer a promising solution. Not only has one of them been successfully exploited to generate electricity for the local village, but its current twenty-four wells also provide a unique opportunity for geoscientists to determine the key characteristics of natural hydrogen reservoirs, the nature of the cap rocks, and the various processes involved in its accumulation, migration, and trapping in the rocks. This scientific research presents core, logging, geophysical, and geochemical studies that have been conducted to better characterize the nature of Bourakèbougou's H2 reservoirs. The study of regional geology and the entire area based on drilling data interpretation and bibliographic information was initially carried out. This resulted in a new geological map of the area and a North-South cross-section of the entire basin. Facies analysis and drilling data showed a correlation between stratigraphic wells F1 and F2 drilled in 2011, 100 km north of Bourakèbougou, and the wells in the study area located further to the south. An antiform structure was also identified around Bourakèbougou. All of these data helped validate and provide a coherent sedimentary model for the entire area. To improve the geochronological framework between different events in the area and to characterize the chronological sequence between sediments and intrusions, U/Pb dating was performed on carbonates from Bougou-6, the deepest well, and well F2. The ages obtained for some carbonates were largely influenced by the intrusion of mega-sills of dolerites between 150 and 210 million years ago (Ma). This was confirmed through dating veins derived from the carbonates of the main Bougou-6 reservoir and well F2. The dated veins, especially the one in the main reservoir containing H2, provided an age of approximately 210 Ma, corresponding to the period of magmatism known as the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP). Only the dating of a carbonate located at 890m yielded an age that was clearly synchronous with the deposition (620 ± 100 Ma). This age confirmed the Neoproterozoic age of the sediments and established a connection with the Neoproterozoic glaciation event that occurred between 635-710 Ma (Sturtian + Marinoan). Core analyses, well imaging, logging, Rock Eval, and calcimetry revealed that the upper carbonates in which the highest amount of H2 is accumulated mainly consist of dolomitic cap carbonates, and all H2 accumulations are found in karstic cavities (thermokarst). Different Neoproterozoic facies were identified along the sequence, including stromatolites, microbialites, sandstones, and diamictites. The rocks located above the main reservoir, primarily dolerite, were characterized to understand their role in trapping H2. It was found that not only do the dolerites play a significant role in trapping due to their cumulative thickness, but the presence of aquifers can also attenuate H2 migration by slowing it down in its migration towards the surface. The diagraphic analyses, coupled with production data, have revealed that the hydrogen system is a dynamic system that is spontaneously recharged in H2-rich gas at the production timescale, unlike oil and gas reservoir systems. Finally, the analysis of geophysical data provided an understanding of the overall structure of the area and the gas phase geophysical signature

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
