    Social processes, creative engagements, and notions of participation and community

    The theme of this short essay is the role of art and other creative tactics of cultural participation in supporting, sustaining or enhancing communities. The purpose is to raise points for discussion rather than suggest models of practice or evidence any form of methodology for socially engaged enterprise in the arts. However, the writing does intentionally focus on a perspective of democratic, and therefore shared, activism, reflecting on the recent context of Corwen and the relationships that have evolved and blossomed between Addo, the visiting artists collective Camp Little Hope and residents and communities that represent local interests or local identity. This example is usefully experimental and speculative in that it has performed its journey beyond the commission of controlling agencies; it has grown, affected and altered its course in response to perceived priorities from super-local contexts rather than as a design response to policy drivers or business goals

    Small mammals of the Addo Elephant National Park

    A survey of the small mammals of the Addo Elephant National Park resulted in a checklist, as well as information on relative numbers, distribution within the Park, reproductive activity, sex ratios, and body measurements. Forty mammals species occur in the Park, while three re-introduced species probably do not occur any longer. Of the 40 species 28 are considered small mammals comprising 13 rodent, eight carnivore, two shrew, two bat, one primate and one lagomorph species, as well as the aardvark: Crociduraflavescens, C. cyanea infumata, Rousettus aegyptiacus, Eptesicus capensis, Cercopithecus pygerythrus, Canis mesomelas, Ictonyx striatus, Poecilogale albinucha, Genetta sp., Herpestes pulverulentus, Suricata suricatta, Proteles cristatus, Felis caracal, Orycteropus afer, Lepus saxatilis, Cryptomys hottentotus, Hystrix africae-australis, Pedetes capensis, Graphiurus murinus, Aethomys namaquensis, Praomys natalensis, Rhabdomys pumilio, Mus minutoides, Rattus rattus, Saccostomys campestris, Desmodillus auricularis, Otomys irroratus and 0. unisulcatus.</p

    Modern approaches for nonlinear data analysis of economic and financial time series

    This thesis centers on introducing modern non-linear approaches for data analysis in economics and finance with special attention on business cycles and financial crisis. It is now well stated in the statistical and economic literature that major economic variables display non-linear behaviour over the different phases of the business cycle. As such, nonlinear approaches/models are required to capture the features of the data generating mechanism of inherently asymmetric realizations, since linear models are incapable of generating such behavior. In this respect, the thesis provides an interdisciplinary and open-minded approach to analyzing economic and financial systems in a novel way. The thesis presents approaches that are robust to extreme values, non-stationarity, applicable to both short and long data length, transparent and adaptive to any financial/economic time series. The thesis provides step-by-step procedures in analyzing economic/financial indicators by incor- porating concepts based on surrogate data method, wavelets, phase space embedding, ’delay vector variance’ (DVV) method and recurrence plots. The thesis also centers on transparent ways of identifying, dating turning points, evaluating impact of economic and financial crisis. In particular, the thesis also provides a procedure on how to an-ticipate future crisis and the possible impact of such crisis. The thesis shows that the incorporation of these techniques in learning the structure and interactions within and between economic and financial variables will be very useful in policy-making, since it facilitates the selection of appropriate processing methods, suggested by the data itself. In addition, a novel procedure to test for linearity and unit root in a nonlinear framework is proposed by introducing a new model – the MT-STAR model – which has similar properties of the ESTAR model but reduces the effects of the identification problem and can also account for asymmetry in the adjustment mechanism towards equilibrium. The asymptotic distributions of the proposed unit root test is non-standard and is derived. The power of the test is evaluated through a simulation study and some empirical illustrations on real exchange rates show its accuracy. Finally, the thesis defines a multivariate Self–Exciting Threshold Autoregressive with eXogenous input (MSETARX) models and present an estimation procedure for the parameters. The modeling procedure for the MSETARX models and problems of estimation are briefly considered

    Effect of particle size distribution, drying and milling technique on explosibility behavior of olive pomace waste

    The Mediterranean area is responsible for about 98% of the olive oil worldwide production, with 900 million olive trees occupying 10 million hectares. However, the processing of 100 kg of olives leads to the production of 40 kg of wastes, mainly constituted by olive pomace, which is potentially recoverable as energetic or material source. In general, in the past 20 years, the exploitation of olive pomace has increased, but along with it, the need for further information about its chemical-physical characterization and the related hazard in industry. Thus, a risk analysis assessment was conducted. When pelletized or in chunks, olive pomace does not pose any greater hazard than a pile of woody material, but when pulverized, it might become dangerous. Two parallel series of experiments were carried out at Dalhousie University (Lab 1) and at Polytechnic of Turin (Lab 2) using the same olive pomace sample, according to slightly different experimental procedures. Olive pomace dust explosibility and flammability parameters were measured: minimum ignition energy (MIE), minimum ignition temperature (MIT), maximum pressure rise rate ((dP/dt)max and KSt), maximum pressure (Pmax), and minimum explosible concentration (MEC). Moreover, the chemical and physical characterization of olive pomace was carried out: moisture content, particle size analysis, Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM) investigation, thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), mass spectrometry, calorific value, and bulk density estimation. Different thermal behaviors were observed according to the sieving/grinding pre-treatment. As concern flammability tests, samples seemed not to be sensitive to electric arc ignition (a value of MIE could not be measured), while coarser samples demonstrated higher ignition sensitivity to hot environment sources (MIT furnace) than finer ones. On the other hand, explosion violence parameters were enhanced by decreasing the particle size, while peak pressures were significantly influenced by the heat of combustion and the moisture content. Finally, a new test was developed to quantify the propensity of the raw material to produce fines by abrasion. It is defined “Abrasion by Rolling Test” (ART). The properties of the fines produced were measured as well
