On the mathematical work of Klaus Floret
In section 1 of this article, a sketch of the life and the career of Klaus Floret is given. Then,in sections 2 to 5, the author reports on the part of the mathematical work of Klaus Floret which was devoted to four important topics in functional analysis in which Klaus worked and in which considerable progress was achieved during his lifetime. These topics are: locally convex inductive limits; bases and approximation properties; - -spaces and the "probleme des topologies"; tensor norms, operator ideals, spaces of polynomials. Some of the history of these topics is included, sometimes together with an account of some of the leading figures in the field. A prelude, an interlude and a coda present related remarks which do not fit in the main body of the article
Specificity and definiteness in sentence and discourse structure
In this paper, I argue that this informally given list of characteristics covers only a certain subclass of specific indefinites. […] In particular, I dispute the definition of specific indefinites as "the speaker has the referent in mind" as rather confusing if one is working with a semantic theory. Furthermore, I discuss "relative specificity", it. cases in which the specific indefinite does not exhibit wide, but intermediate or narrow scope behavior. Based on such data, I argue that specificity expresses a referential dependency between introduced discourse items. Informally speaking, the specificity of the indefinite expression something [...] expresses that the reference of the expression depends on the reference of another expression, here, on the expression a monk, not the speaker
Vaclav Klaus and "nature"
Thesis is based on the views of authors of sociology of knowledge (Berger, Luckman, Bourdieu) and authors of discourse analysis (Foucault, Fairclough). The central assumption is that knowledge is socially constructed and that this construction has its strong ideological and hierarchic aspects. Author is analyzing books and texts of Vaclav Klaus using the critical discourse analysis. Author is convinced that Vaclav Klaus has a substantive influence on public opinion in Czech Republic. Also author is convinced the struggle in the discussion over environmental topics is based in different basic assupmtions of discussion participant. Thus author decided to analyse the Vaclav Klaus's basic assumptions for the notions of nature and environment

Antifibrotic, nephroprotective potential of ACE inhibitor vs AT1 antagonist in a murine model of renal fibrosis
BACKGROUND: Several studies have shown antifibrotic effects of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors as well as of angiotensin receptor 1 (AT1) antagonists, however, prospective trials with clinical end points comparing these effects do not exist. COL4A3-/- mice develop a non-hypertensive progressive renal fibrosis. We used this animal model to compare the potential of ACE inhibitor vs AT1 antagonist to prevent renal fibrosis irrespective of blood pressure-dependent involvement by the renin system. METHODS: COL4A3-/- mice were treated with placebo, ramipril or candesartan. Blood pressure, proteinuria, serum urea and lifespan were monitored. Renal matrix was characterized by immuno-histochemistry, light and electron microscopy. Further biochemical analysis was provided using cDNA microarray and western blot techniques. RESULTS: Untreated mice died of renal failure after 71+/-6 days. Ramipril and candesartan both delayed onset and reduced the extent of proteinuria. Both had minor effects on blood pressure and postponed onset of uraemia. Ramipril increased lifespan by 111% to 150+/-21 days (P<0.01), whereas candesartan resulted in only a 38% prolongation to 98+/-16 days (P<0.01). Ramipril reduced glomerular and tubulo-interstitial fibrosis and numbers of activated fibroblasts to a greater extent than candesartan. Microarray and western blot analysis revealed a higher antifibrotic potential of ramipril in terms of downregulation of TGFbeta, connective tissue growth factor, metalloproteinases and extracellular matrix proteins. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate an antifibrotic, nephroprotective effect of ACE inhibitors and AT1 antagonists in an animal model of progressive renal fibrosis. The greater antifibrotic effect of ramipril at the maximal therapeutic doses employed may not be explained by different antiproteinuric or blood pressure lowering properties, but by-in contrast to candesartan-its ability to hinder the proinflammatory, profibrotic activation of the angiotensin receptor 2
First person – Klaus Herburger
ABSTRACT
First Person is a series of interviews with the first authors of a selection of papers published in Journal of Cell Science, helping early-career researchers promote themselves alongside their papers. Klaus Herburger is the first author on ‘Localisation and substrate specificities of transglycanases in charophyte algae relate to development and morphology’, published in Journal of Cell Science. Klaus has a position in the lab of Professor Stephen Fry at University of Edinburgh, UK, investigating enzymatic remodelling of polysaccharides in plant cell walls.</jats:p
Klaus Mann et son mythe personnel : essai de lecture psychanalytique
The purpose of this thesis is the study of the innermost personality of Klaus Mann and of the relation which exists in him between the writer and the man. After reading the novel "Symphonie pathétique" according to our method, which bases on the psychocritique and the psychoanalytical theory, we have carried out our investigation of Klaus Mann?s works, searching for the constituent parts of his "private myth". Klaus Mann?s heroes are neurotic homosexuals who look for an identification in creation or political action and a personal justification in religion. This search for identification is seldom successful and we notice regressive behaviours, and even suicides. The confrontation with the author?s biography and the study of relationships between the members of the family, clearly shows a non-resolution of the Oedipus conflict, the impressions of which are to be found in all the works of the author. As a conclusion, we draw a psychological portrait of Klaus Mann, which results from our study of the novels, autobiographies, letters and diaries of the author and the contributions of the family psychonanalysisL?objet de cette thèse est l?étude de la personnalité profonde de Klaus Mann et du rapport qui s?établit en lui entre l?auteur et l?homme.
