    Adaptive Radar Detection of Dim Moving Targets in Presence of Range Migration

    This letter addresses adaptive radar detection of dim moving targets. To circumvent range migration, the detection problem is formulated as a multiple hypothesis test and solved applying model order selection rules which allow to estimate the "position" of the target within the CPI and eventually detect it. The performance analysis shows that the newly proposed architectures can provide an accurate estimate of the target position along with improved detection performance with respect to existing competitors

    Integrating Artificial Intelligence Techniques in Cell Mechanics

    The Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques have been revolutionizing many subjects. The AI-empowered methods such as Reinforcement Learning (RL) and Deep Learning (DL) have been employed for various aspects of cell mechanics. This work review state of art of AI and ML technologies that have been used to describe, analyze and predict the mechanics of cells as well as the use of numerical methods for cell mechanics. This review also consider the impact of utilizing physical constraints on the AI and ML models aiming at improved convergences during the training and validation phases. At the end, we will provide a statistical analysis of the reported studies and a discussion on the current challenges and future possibilities

    Contribution of Sentinel-2 data for applications in vegetation monitoring

    With the entry into operation of the Sentinel-2 mission in June 2015, a new land monitoring costellation of twin satellites has been added to Copernicus project from ESA and new insights have been derived through the combination of Sentinel-2 data with other optical/multispectral data, and with other data from satellites belonging to the same Copernicus project. To this end, the objective of this paper has been to present new added-value tools first through the integration of different satellite platforms: data from NASA Landsat-8 and ESA Sentinel-1 have been used and combined, and furthermore through the comparison of satellite data all from the same Copernicus project: data from Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 have been jointly processed and compared. Although data from optical/multispectral sensors, as those of Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2, and data from SAR on board of Sentinel-1, are very different, their combination provides useful and interesting results. The integration and combination of these data can find useful application in many fields from oceans to waterways, from land surfaces to fossil deposits, from vegetation to forest areas. In this works authors have focused their interest in green areas and vegetation monitoring applications, by choosing as case of interest the Royal Palace of Caserta and its gardens. The idea has started from the increasing interest in monitoring the cultural heritage monuments and in particular the surrounding vegetation with the green areas and the parks inside. Satellite images can put into evidence boundaries modifications, the vegetation state, their possible degradation, and other phenomena such as changes in the territories due both to natural and to anthropogenic causes. Data combination from different sources as above specified gives a good number of indexes very useful to analyze the vegetation state and its health in a very deep way. Many of these indexes have been calculated and discussed for investigation

    Innovative solutions based on the EM-algorithm for covariance structure detection and classification in polarimetric SAR images

    This article addresses the challenge of identifying the polarimetric covariance matrix (PCM) structures associated with a polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image. Interestingly, such information can be used, for instance, to improve the scene interpretation or to enhance the performance of (possibly PCM-based) segmentation algorithms as well as other kinds of methods. To this end, a general framework to solve a multiple hypothesis test is introduced with the aim to detect and classify contextual spatial variations in polarimetric SAR images. Specifically, under the null hypothesis, only one unknown structure is assumed for data belonging to a two-dimensional spatial sliding window, whereas under each alternative hypothesis, data are partitioned into subsets sharing different PCM structures. The problem of partition estimation is solved by resorting to hidden random variables representative of covariance structure classes and the expectation-maximization algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed detection strategies is demonstrated on both simulated and real polarimetric SAR data also in comparison with existing classification algorithms

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    A track-before-detect strategy based on sparse data processing for air surveillance radar applications

    In this paper we consider the tracking problem of a moving target competing against noise and clutter in a surveillance radar scenario. For a single array-antenna multiple-target tracking system and according to the Track-Before-Detect paradigm, we present a novel approach based on a three-stage processing chain that involves the Sparse Learning via Iterative Minimization algorithm, the k-means clustering method and the ad hoc detector by exploiting the sparse nature of the operating scenario. Under the latter assumption, the detection strategy declares the presence of targets subsequently to the retrieval of their corresponding tracks performed by jointly processing the received echoes of multiple consecutive radar scans. Simulation results show that the proposed approach is able to provide good tracking and detection capabilities for different multiple target trajectories with low Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise ratio and results in providing advantages when compared to a number of other reference Track-Before-Detect strategies based on sparse data processing techniques

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
