    This letter specifies that 1,697 pounds of merchandise purchased at Pittsburgh have been shipped to Thomas Rotch for his general store at Kendal. He and Charity Rotch departed Hartford, Connecticut on January 18, 1811 on a four month exploratory trip to investigate the possibility of purchasing land for resettlement in Ohio. They returned to Hartford in the late Spring of 1811,and spent four months preparing for the return trip to Ohio, reaching the state in November, 1811. Charity Rotch remained in Wheeling, Virginia with Friends Patience and Michael Graham, while Rotch established temporary quarters on his property in northeast Ohio,(now Massillon). In December, his order for goods for his proposed store were shipped by James Adams from Pittsburgh. In February 1812, Rotch brought his wife to the site of their new homestead, however she resided in Canton until a log house was completed sometime in 1812. 7.55" X 11" (19.3 by 28 cm
