Shem Ṭov Ben Isaac, Glossary of Botanical Terms, Nos. 1-18

No full text
This article provides a critical edition and translation of the first eighteen items of the letter Aleph in the first list of the medico-botanical glossary compiled by Shem Ṭov ben Isaac of Tortosa in the second half of the 13th century. It is part of his translation into Hebrew of Book 29 of the medical compendium entitled Kitāb al-taṣrīf, whose original author is the Arabic physician al-Zahrāwī (10th century). The glossary is actually an autonomous one, composed by Shem Ṭov ben Isaac himself, containing two alphabetical lists of synonyms. The lemmata of the first list are Hebrew or Aramaic plant names gleaned from the Bible or rabbinic literature, in which each entry gives the Arabic, Latin, and Occitan synonyms. The second list is organized according to Old Occitan names of drugs and offers their Arabic, biblical/rabbinic, and sometimes also the Latin equivalents. For an Arabic equivalent to a rabbinic term Shem Ṭov ben Isaac consulted (as he tells us) medieval commentators, while for an equivalent to a biblical term he consulted Saʿadya Gaon (882-942) and R. Jonah ibn Janāḥ. The edition of the complete glossary is part of an interdisciplinary project at the Martin Buber Institute for Jewish Studies of the University of Cologne and at the Department of Romance Philology of the Free University of Berlin, the goal of which is the edition and the analysis of unedited texts of medico-botanical literature written in Middle Hebrew

Crystal Structure of the Eukaryotic Ribosome

No full text
Macromolecular Message Translation The ribosome is a macromolecular machine that translates the sequence of messenger RNA into proteins in all living cells. Structures of prokaryotic ribosomes have supplied insight into the conserved features of such protein synthesis; however, eukaryotic translation has additional levels of complexity. Ben-Shem et al. (p. 1203 ) have determined the crystal structure of the yeast 80S ribosome at 4.15 angstrom resolution. The ribosome is in a ratcheted conformation, which is a state that is an intermediate in the translocation of messenger RNA and transfer RNA. The crystal structure provides the molecular underpinning for existing biochemical and genetic data and will inform the design of functional experiments. </jats:p

Surveying the Gamma-ray sky with the BATSE and INTEGRAL satellites

No full text
This thesis describes the developments and contributions made by Adam Hill to survey the Gamma-ray sky with the BATSE and INTEGRAL satellites. The soft γ-ray sky has been relatively unexplored on large scales. The last survey of the entire sky in this energy band was made by the HEAO-1 A4 mission in the late 1970’s. This thesis takes advantage of new techniques and instruments to probe the source populations of the γ-ray sky in the energy band 20-160 keV. The BATSE instrument served as the all-sky monitor on-board the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory for 9 years. By applying the newly developed LIMBO software and CLEAN algorithms an all-sky map of the sky is constructed using all 9 years of BATSE data. The map is constructed using data which spans the 30-160 keV energy band and produces a source catalogue of 36 sources down to a flux of ~20 mCrab. The performance and limitations of this new technique are assessed and presented. IBIS is the imager on-board the INTEGRAL γ-ray observatory. Data from IBIS is used in the construction of mosaics of the γ-ray sky which span the 20-100 keV energy band. The techniques and methods of the 1st and 2nd IBIS/ISGRI Survey Catalogues are presented which identify 123 and 209 discrete γ-ray sources respectively. The global properties of the sources of the 1st IBIS/ISGRI Survey Catalogue are analysed on a statistical basis. The properties of the X-ray binary populations and the unclassified INTEGRAL sources are presented. The unclassified source population are seen to share many of the characteristics of the high mass systems. A detailed study of IGR J18027-2016 indicates that it is a proto-typical example of the new INTEGRAL sources and is identified to be an obscured, supergiant high mass X-ray binary with a neutron star companion.</p

Staging Decadence (salon)

No full text
For this event, we marked the dawn of a new year in the depths of winter, welcoming a fabulous array of ungodly glitterati in an unabashed celebration of decadence! It was a salon-style collaboration between Rich Mix and Staging Decadence featuring performances by Lucy McCormick, Darkwah, Owen Parry and Nando Messias, talks by Giulia Palladini, Ben Walters, and Adam Alston, and the delectable sonorities and emceeing prowess of Sadie Sinner. The event followed a panel discussion celebrating the launch of a special issue of the journal Volupté on ‘Decadence and Performance’

Szykowna Sylwia, Art as a laboratory – Guy Ben-Ary’s work. “Images” vol. XXV, no. 34. Poznań 2019. Adam Mickiewicz University Press. Pp. 115–124. ISSN 1731-450X. DOI 10.14746/i.2019.34.07. The present paper deals with the work of an Israeli artist, Guy Ben-Ary. His work is a prime example of artistic practice in the field of bio art. Bio art provokes critical thinking about the place and role of people in today’s world. The main purpose of the article is to describe changes in contemporary artistic practices within the framework of art as a laboratory, the aim of which is to study reality. Szykowna Sylwia, Art as a laboratory – Guy Ben-Ary’s work. “Images” vol. Shem Pete's Alaska: the territory of the Upper Cook Inlet Dena'ina

No full text
Includes bibliographical references and index.Revised second editon.Compiled and edited by James Kari and James A. Fall; principal contributor, Shem Pete; additional place names and commentary by Daniel Alex and 51 others.Shem Pete (1896-1989), the colorful and brilliant raconteur from Susitna Station, Alaska left a rich legacy of knowledge about the Upper Cook Inlet Dena'ina world. Shem was one of the most versatile storytellers and historians in twentieth century Alaska. His lifetime travel map of approximately 13,500 square miles is one of the largest ever documented in this degree of detail anywhere in the world. Reflecting the latest scholarship on Upper Inlet Dena'ina ethnogeography and history, this revised second edition includes new place names, two new essays, numerous annotations, and new photographs. It also illustrates how Shem Pete's Alaska has contributed to the recognition of the Dena'ina heritage of southcentral Alaska since the publication of the second edition in 2003. The names form a reconstructed place name network from the vantage points of the life experiences of Shem Pete and other Dena'ina and Ahtna speakers. The place names are annotated with comments and stories by Shem Pete and more than fifty other contributors, and with historic references, vignettes, numerous photographs, a selection of historic maps, and shaded-relief place name maps. The authors provide perspective on Dena'ina language and culture, and a summary of Dena'ina geographic knowledge and place name research methodology. The book is a significant contribution to Athabascan ethnography and linguistics, the history of Alaska, and to the fields of ethnogeography and onomastics. This book will be the basic reference work on the Dena'ina people of Upper Cook Inlet.--Provided by publisher
