Detection of Superhumps in the VY Scl-type Nova-Like Variable KR Aur

    No full text
We report on the detection of negative superhumps in KR Aur, a typical VY Scl star. The observations were obtained with a multi-channel photometer over 107 h. The analysis of the data clearly revealed brightness variations with a period of 3.771 (±0.005) h. This is 3.5 per cent shorter than Porb, suggesting that the observed oscillation is a negative superhump. Negative superhumps in VY Scl stars are widespread. The discovery of powerful soft X-rays from V751 Cyg suggests that VY Scl stars may contain white dwarfs, on to which nuclear burning of the accreted material occurs. If this suspicion is correct, it is possible that the powerful radiation emerging from the white dwarf may cause a tilt of the accretion disc to the orbital plane, and its retrograde precession may produce the negative superhumps seen in VY Scl stars. © 2007 The Author. Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis of AI Use in Financial Services Adam Steiner 2024/25 Abstract This thesis explores the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in financial services us- ing both quantitative and qualitative analytical methods. The first part of the study investigates the impact of AI investments on the financial performance of companies-specifically ROE and ROA-in the U.S. financial services sector between 2014 and 2023. To uncover these relationships, panel regressions with random effects were employed. The results of these models reveal that invest- ments in AI did not have a statistically significant impact on companies' finan- cial performance. Additionally, the models revealed several significant drivers of both ROE and ROA. The former is driven by net profit margin, short-term debt to total assets, U.S. unemployment rate, tax rate and earnings per share, while the latter by net profit margin, operating profit margin, revenue growth rate, U.S. GDP, U.S. inflation and asset turnover ratio. The second part of the research explores AI's role in financial services through interviews with five industry professionals. While AI is seen as a powerful and expanding tool, con- cerns remain around its reliability, privacy risks, and its impact on the change of job roles. 1Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis of AI Use in Financial Services Adam Steiner 2024/25 Abstrakt Tato studie zkouma ́ vyuz ̌itı ́ ume ̌le ́ inteligence (AI) ve financ ̌nı ́ch sluz ̌ba ́ch po- mocı ́ kvantitativnı ́ch a kvalitativnı ́ch analyticky ́ch metod. Background: The prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity giving a and obesity is rising worldwide and its impact spanning through adolescence to adulthood. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity and the occurrence of high blood pressure and elevated blood glucose among school aged children in an urban settlement in Benin City, Nigeria. Design: A cross-sectional, descriptive study was utilized. Subjects and setting: A total of 195 school aged children residing in households in the selected ward were recruited for the study carried out between 2014 and 2015. Outcome measures comAdam VY ( ) weight: Anthropometric measurements were recorded and used to determine the body mass indices (BMI) of the children. Also blood pressure measurements and random blood sugars of the respondents were determined to ascertain the blood pressure and glycaemic status of the children. Results: The proportion of overthat for underweight was 11.8% amongst the study respondents. The females, 18 (16.6%) had a significantly higher proportion of overweight and obesity than the males, 3 (3.5%) [p = 0.003]. The prevalence of hypertension was 6 (3.1%) and elevated blood glucose was 4 (2.1%). Conclusion: The prevalence of overweight was 7.7% while that for obesity was 3.1%. Also, the prevalence of hypertension and elevated blood glucose was 3.1% and 2.1% respectively amongst the school aged children and females had a significantly higher proportion of overweight and obesity than males in the study. There is a need for public enlightenment towards promoting healthier lifestyle choices and screening of disease conditions early in childhood

A CHEMICAL AND DYNAMICAL MODEL FOR THE OXYGEN-RICH SUPERGIANT VY CMA

    No full text
Author Institution: UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA, STEWARD OBSERVATORY, ARIZONA RADIO OBSERVATORY, 933 N CHERRY AVENUE, TUCSON, AZ 85721VY Canis Majoris (VY CMa) is an oxygen-rich supergiant star that is loosing mass at a very high rate (2×104Myr1\sim2\times10^{-4}M_{\odot}yr^{-1}). A source of OH, H2_2O, and SiO maser emission, the circumstellar envelope was never thought to be abundant in molecules. Recent observations using the telescope facilities of the Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO) has shown that this source is the most chemically diverse O-rich envelope to date. Seventeen different species have now been found in VY CMa, including exotic compounds such as NaCl and PN. Six carbon-containing molecules have been identified, as well, including CS, HCO+^+, and HNC. The line profiles vary dramatically from species to species. Modeling of the profiles indicates the presence of a spherical wind, a highly collimated blue-shifted outflow almost directly along the line of sight, and a poorly-collimated red-shifted expansion at a 45irc\sim45^irc angle from the line of sight. This model agrees extremely well with Hubble Space Telescope infrared observations and atomic emission/absorption line data. Various chemistries exist in these regions. Sulfur-bearing species such as SO and SO2_2 are abundant in the collimated outflows, for example, while SiO dominates the spherical wind. The carbon is almost equally shared between CO and HCN in all three regions. Details of this chemistry will be presented, as well as an interpretation of the dynamical structure of VY CMa

SPECIFIC CHARACTERISTICS OF TY-/VY-FORMS IN RUSSIAN AND ITALIAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURES

    t. This paper presents the first part of research on the particularities of Ty-/Vy you/polite You, both 2nd person singular in the Russian and Italian languages. Far from the ambition of presenting the definitive account of the subject matter, the author identifies the main issues related to the investigation of these lexico-grammatical forms functioning in speech. Thus, such investigation of this matter implies researcher’s focus on: (1) particularities of Ty-/Vy-functioning as the means of speech etiquette, specifically, in the functions of addressing, as well as in the concrete speech acts, in which the choice of the pronoun determines the grammatical realization of the statement (for instance, a request), (2) contextual meanings of these forms in cases when they serve as the means of an expressive function and the description of their peculiarities of their use in Russian in rigid phraseological units. At present, a contrastive analysis of concrete speech acts appears promising (and productive) method of interpretation of the national speech etiquette specifics. The paper presents the results of the study on the peculiarities of the use of the Ty-/Vy-forms as the means of speech etiquette in concrete situations of verbal communication. Comparative (contrastive) analysis of Russian and Italian allows to demonstrate the specifics of these two forms in either of the studied linguistic cultures. An additional focus of this paper is the investigation of the recent trends in the use of these forms in contemporary Italian. The study revealed the similarities and differences in Russian and Italian communicative behavior. The findings of the study can be applied in the context of teaching the etiquette of crosscultural communication and Russian-Italian translation

Equity in Author Order: A Feminist Laboratory’s Approach

    No full text
Author order is crucial; it is the currency of academia. Within STEM disciplines, women and junior researchers--those who are the primary constituents of our lab-- consistently receive less credit for equal work. Our Civic Laboratory for Environmental Action Research (CLEAR) is a feminist marine science laboratory at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. Recognizing that the stakes are high for CLEAR members, we have developed an approach to author order that emphasizes process and equity rather than system and equality. Our process is premised on: 1) deciding author order vy consensus; 2) valuing care work and other forms of labour that are usually left out of scientific value systems; and 3) taking intersectional social standing into account.  Although CLEAR’s approach differs from others’, we take author order seriously as a compromised but dominant structure within science we must contend with. That is, rather than attempt to circumvent author order, we stay with the trouble. This article outlines this process.

EXOTIC METAL MOLECULES IN OXYGEN-RICH ENVELOPES: DETECTION OF AlOH (X1Σ+^{1}\Sigma^+) IN VY CANIS MAJORIS

    No full text
Author Institution: Department of Chemistry, Department of Astronomy, and Steward Observatory, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721A new interstellar molecule, AlOH, has been detected toward the envelope of VY Canis Majoris, an oxygen-rich red supergiant. Three rotational transitions of AlOH were observed using the facilities of the Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO). The J = 9 \rightarrow 8 and J = 7 \rightarrow 6 lines at 1 mm were measured with the ARO Submillimeter Telescope (SMT), while the J = 5 \rightarrow 4 transition at 2 mm was observed with the ARO 12 m antenna on Kitt Peak. The AlOH spectra exhibit quite narrow line widths, indicating that the emission arises from within the dust acceleration zone of the central circumstellar outflow. From a radiative transfer analysis, the abundance of AlOH relative to H2_2 was found to be 1x107^{-7} for a source size of 0.26'' or 22 R_*. AlOH is likely formed just beyond the photosphere via thermodynamic equilibrium chemistry, and then disappears due to dust condensation. The AlOH/AlO abundance ratio found in VY CMa is \sim17. LTE calculations predict the monohydroxides should be the major carriers of Al, Ca, and Mg in O-rich envelopes, as opposed to the oxides or halides
