Socially Responsible Investment in Malaysia: Behavioural Framework in Evaluating Investors’ Decision Making Process
Socially responsible investment (SRI) represents the method of investment that consider the impact (good or bad) of investment decisions on social, ethics, and/or environment within the context of rigorous financial analysis. Despite the evidence of an increasing interest among academics and industry players on SRI, the understanding of the psychological aspect of decision-making behaviour of SRI investors is still incomplete. Currently, no published evidence has been found in the context of Malaysian investors‘ decision – making behaviour regarding SRI. Thus, this study aims to examine the role of intention, attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control and moral norm in explaining SRI behaviour by investors in Malaysia. The underlying framework is the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TpB) that has been modified to incorporate moral norm as an additional explanatory variable. Studies that apply TpB in their measurement of behaviour indicate a mix of explanations for the relationship of constructs (i.e. - impact of attitude and moral norm) that influence behaviour through intention which warrant further examinations. Previous studies on SRI are extended by examining the role of intention in improving the relationships of TpB‘s attributes on behaviour. This study uses Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to ascertain the causal relationships between the variables and whether these relationships could be improved by intention as a mediator. The results based on a questionnaire survey of Malaysian investors suggest that attitude, subjective norm and moral norm have positive effect on intention which in turn positively affects behaviour towards SRI. The relationship for attitude, subjective norm, and moral norm to behaviour is improved significantly by intention as a mediator. Based on squared multiple correlations (R²), it is found that the final structural model could explain 46% of the variance in intention and 50% of the variance in behaviour. These results suggest that, together with social, ethical and environmental issues (SEE) and financial goals, SRI providers and policy makers should also consider the influence of social pressure from investors‘ friends and relatives in their SRI decision making. Investors‘ personal standards are also found to influence the intention and behaviour to invest in SRI. Furthermore the results of this study yielded critical information and insights that will enable Malaysian authorities as well as fund management companies to launch effective marketing strategies and develop SRI products
The Conceptual Framework of Pathological Smartphone Use (PSU)
AbstractDuring the last decade, smartphones have gained popularity all over the world. It is reported, over 50% of mobile subscribers in the US and 65% of mobile subscribers in South Korea are using smartphones, and these percentages keep on increasing. Many studies had been carried out to determine the impact of technology addiction and other related problems and had found that these users exhibit disturbed behavior on the usage. Noticeably, there is a dearth of study to examine the positive impact of technology addiction in Malaysia. Likewise, little is known about the positive effect of mobile device pathology. As such, this research aims to investigate this phenomenon from the other side of the coin, which is to hypothesize that smartphone pathology may positively affect a person's well-being to be a smart consumer
Social Media Intelligence Quotient (SMIQ) Among Graduates: Knowledge Gathering from Focus Group with Graduates
AbstractThe emerging trend of social media has influenced the users to explore the advantages of social media and simultaneously transform the landscape of learning experience. Nowadays, the internet is a vital source in the educational world that the students are encouraged to use it. Thus, they are creative in exploring the advantage of the internet and it is helpful in developing their social media skills. Furthermore, industries are hunting those who have these skills to work with them but most of the employers are not satisfied with the quality of current graduate that it affects the unemployment among graduates. The research purposes are to investigate the current consumptions trend of social media among graduates, identify their dependency level, determine the effect of social media and define social media intelligence quotient among them. In addition, the focus group was conducted to identify social media quotient among graduates. Therefore, this research found the graduates are literate with social media usage and those who have online business exposed them to have good business skill
ACTIVATING PRO-ENVIRONMENTAL BEHAVIOUR AT THE WORKPLACE THROUGH GREEN HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES: THE ROLE OF PERCEIVED INNOVATION CHARACTERISTICS
This study explores the influence of seven green human resource management (GHRM) practices and perceived innovation characteristics (PICs) on employees' pro-environmental behaviour (PEB) at the workplace. It bridges a gap in research that combines the Ability-Motivation-Opportunity (AMO) and Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) theories. Utilizing partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) and survey data of 366 employees from six Malaysian development financial institutions, the findings suggested that four out of seven GHRM practices have a positive direct effect on PEB. Additionally, PICs mediate the relationship between four GHRM practices and PEB, suggesting the importance of employee perceptions of GHRM practices in fostering workplace PEB
The Predictors and Consequences of Consumers’ Attitude Towards Mobile Shopping Application
AbstractToday, mobile phones are no longer devices for one-to-one communication through voice and text messaging services. This phenomenon has increase the awareness to the new dynamic market environment which caused many business entities or companies constantly looking for ways and means of expanding and retaining their market share. Many marketing experts consider that the mobile device is an extremely promising marketing tool to overcome the major challenges of getting time and the attention of consumers. Those aggressive and extrovert companies have gone beyond adding mobile-sites, they create and introduce their own apps to remain competitive in the global market. In its introduction stage, the consumers’ response is very positive whereby many people have subscribed the mobile shopping application and the number of consumers that visit the website via mobile application was also very high. But unfortunately, actual purchase and transaction rarely takes place via mobile application in which the number of actual purchase and transaction was very low as compared to sales recorded via the company's official website. Therefore, this research attempts to determine consumers’ attitude which include feelings and beliefs towards mobile shopping that have substantial impact on consumers’ attitude and also examined the consequences of consumer's intentional behaviour such as using the mobile shopping application to seek information, share information or actually make purchase transaction. Data were collected through online survey and a total of 218 usable respondents were analysed using Partial Least Squares (PLS). The findings revealed that mobile application features is the most influential predictor to consumers’ attitude meanwhile security and confidentiality is the least influential predictor. It was also found that the main consumers’ intentional behavior is to share the information
Exploring Socioeconomic Landscape: A survey dataset analysis of household income among Malaysian public higher learning institution students
This study focuses on the socioeconomic aspects of household income among students in Malaysian Public Higher Learning Institutions. This study employs a survey research design with 30,527 respondents from 14 states in Malaysia. The findings reveal various income brackets and shed light on the financial challenges students face while pursuing higher education. This study emphasizes the importance of understanding socioeconomic dynamics within higher education institutions to address equity gaps and enhance support for students from diverse economic backgrounds. It provides a framework for targeted interventions and policies to promote equal opportunities and inclusive learning environments in Malaysia's public higher education institutions
Personal values, subjective well-being and destination-loyalty intention of international students
What are the factors that predict international students’ destination-loyalty intention? This is the main question this paper addresses, using an online survey among 396 (short-term, N = 182) and (long-term, N = 214) international students at a Norwegian university. Structural equation model-AMOS was conducted to examine relationships among personal values, subjective well-being and destination-loyalty intentions. The results showed that: (1) universalism was positively related to subjective well-being for short-term students; and (2) subjective well-being was positively related to destination-loyalty intention for all groups. We found that relatively stable and happy individuals might be important for ensuring destination-loyalty intentions. Results also indicated that personal values that emphasize justice and equity are also important for short-term international students’ well-being
