Development of composite calibration standard for quantitative NDE by ultrasound and thermography
No full textInspection of aircraft components for damage utilizing ultrasonic Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) is a time intensive endeavor. Additional time spent during aircraft inspections translates to added cost to the company performing them, and as such, reducing this expenditure is of great importance. There is also great variance in the calibration samples from one entity to another due to a lack of a common calibration set. By characterizing damage types, we can condense the required calibration sets and reduce the time required to perform calibration while also providing procedures for the fabrication of these standard sets. We present here our effort to fabricate composite samples with known defects and quantify the size and location of defects, such as delaminations, and impact damage. Ultrasonic and Thermographic images are digitally enhanced to accurately measure the damage size. Ultrasonic NDE is compared with thermography.This proceeding may be downloaded for personal use only. Es werden verschiedene Positionen zu Trauerarbeit und ihren Risiken und Nebenwirkungen aufgezeigt. Auf die Wichtigkeit von Trost, die Ausrichtung auf Salutogenese und auf die Stärkung von Resilienz, sowie persönlicher Souveränität, Potentialen und Ressourcen wird hingewiesen. Die Arbeit wird durch einen Beitrag von H.G. Upon Daedalian Wings of Paper Money: Adam Smith and the Crisis of 1772
No full textAdam Smith advocated laissez faire for most sectors of the economy, but he believed that banking and finance required several forms of regulation including usury laws and the prohibition of small-denomination bank notes. Smith’s support for banking regulation appears to have been a response to the shocks that hit the Scottish banking system during the time that he was composing the Wealth of Nations. The most important was the Crisis of 1772, which has been described as the first modern banking crisis faced by the Bank of England. It resembles the Crisis of 2008 in a number of striking ways. This paper describes the Crisis of 1772, the other shocks that hit the Scottish banking system, and the evolution of Smith’s views on the regulation of banking. It is based on Smith’s writings, the secondary sources, and a quantification of the new issues of Scottish bank notes during Smith’s era.

Villiers de L´Isle-Adam: tradução e exorcismo ou a propósito das palavras pesadas em balanças de teias de aranha e do fantástico em Claire Lenoir
No full textTese (doutorado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Literatura, Florianópolis, 2011A presente tese é fundamentada na obra Tribulat Bonhomet, de Villiers de L'Isle-Adam (1838-1889). Obra composta de quatro contos e uma novela. Tanto a obra quanto o autor permitem muitas reflexões acerca da literatura, desde a literatura de humor até a de horror, mas sobretudo literatura fantástica. E é sobre esta que me detenho, especificamente na novela Claire Lenoir. Como Tribulat Bonhomet permanece inédito em português, apresento uma tradução e sobre essa tradução ? que se encontra ao fim, como anexo ? elaborei minha tese, sobre uma via dupla: tradução e teoria literária. Dedico o Capítulo 1 a essa duplicidade, separadamente, apresentando em 1.1 a literatura fantástica, fazendo o esboço de um tipo de literatura que provoca um exorcismo do real, um afastamento entre o leitor e a realidade. Na seqüência, em 1.2 abordo as perspectivas de tradução de um texto literário, a partir, principalmente, de Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1834) e Antoine Berman (1942-1991). Ambos os tópicos servirão de base para os dois capítulos subseqüentes. No Capítulo 2, dedico-me ao processo de tradução do romance, levando em conta as perspectivas abordadas no Capítulo 1.2, fazendo comentários acerca da tradução e comparando-a com outras traduções. Por último, no Capítulo 3, partindo da forma como Villiers de L'Isle-Adam mescla realidade e ficção ? e tomo aí como base o texto traduzido ? retomo os temas esboçados no Capítulo 1.1, da literatura fantástica, para especificar os elementos estranhos que geram o fantástico na obra e provocam um exorcismo do real. A conclusão, portanto, dá-se sobre uma duplicidade: há um exorcismo do real na literatura fantástica; e há um exorcismo do real em Villiers ? mediante a inserção de elementos fantásticos.Cette thèse est basée sur l'oeuvre Tribulat Bonhomet, de Villiers de L'Isle-Adam (1838-1889). Oeuvre composée de quatre récits et une nouvelle. L'oeuvre et l'auteur permettent de nombreuses réflexions sur la littérature, de la littérature d'humour jusqu´à l'horreur, mais surtout sur la littérature fantastique. Et c'est sur cette dernière que je me pencherai spécifiquement avec la nouvelle Claire Lenoir. Comme Tribulat Bonhomet reste inédite en portugais, je présente une traduction, et c´est sur cette traduction ? qui se trouve en fin de volume en pièce jointe ? que j´ai élaboré ma thèse selon une double voie: la traduction et la théorie littéraire. Je consacre le Chapitre 1 à cette duplicité, séparément, en présentant en 1.1 la littérature fantastique, faisant le croquis d'un type de littérature qui provoque un exorcisme du réel, une distanciation entre le lecteur et la réalité. Ensuite, en 1.2 je discute sur les perspectives de la traduction d'un texte littéraire, à partir, principalement, de Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1834) et d'Antoine Berman (1942-1991). Les deux thèmes formeront la base des deux chapitres suivants. Dans le Chapitre 2, je me consacre au processus de traduction de l'oeuvre, en tenant compte des perspectives discutées dans la partie 1.2, en faisant des commentaires concernant la traduction et en la comparant à d'autres traductions. Gum Arabic modifies anti-inflammatory cytokine in mice fed with high fat diet induced obesity
No full textObesity is a global health problem associated with high morbidity and mortality. However, the effect of GA on anti-inflammatory cytokines is not reported. We intended to investigate the effects of GA on anti-inflammatory cytokines in mouse fed with high fat diet. Forty five female CD-1 mice of 90 days old were randomly divided into three groups (n = 15). Mice fed mice either a normal diet (control), high fat diet (HFD) or high fat diet containing 10% w/w GA (HFD + gum) for 15 weeks. Body weights, visceral adipose tissue (VAT), plasma lipid profile, blood glucose, plasma anti-inflammatory cytokines, adiponectin, ghrelin and leptin levels were measured. In addition, anti-inflammatory cytokines gene mRNA expressions were detected. Supplementation of GA significantly (P < 0.05) decreased body weight and VAT associated with decreases in blood glucose, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL), whereas, increased high density lipoprotein (HDL) concentrations. HFD consumption increased plasma interleukins (IL) IL-1β, IL-6, IL-18, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), leptin and ghrelin concentrations. However, the administration of GA significantly (P < 0.05) decreased plasma IL-1β, IL-6, IL-18, TNF-α, leptin and ghrelin compared to the high fat diet and control groups. On the other hand, the treatment of GA significantly (P < 0.05) increased plasma IL-10 and adiponectin compared to the HDF and control groups. Likewise, GA significantly (P < 0.05) down-regulated hepatic IL-6, IL-10, IL-18, TNF-α and C-reactive protein mRNA expression compared to the HDF group. However, no change found in IL-1β mRNA expression. These findings indicate that consumption of GA may help to prevent obesity related complications through downregulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines gene
Targeting G-Quadruplexes within the ADAM-15 Promoter: A Novel Therapeutic Approach for Breast Cancer
No full textADAM-15 is a protein that is up-regulated in many diseases, particularly breast cancer; its over-expression is correlated with more aggressive and invasive phenotypes. The critical core promoter region of ADAM-15 is capable of forming a secondary DNA structure known as a G-quadruplex. The stabilization of this G-quadruplex has the potential to decrease the transcription of the over-expressed ADAM-15 protein. Six hundred forty compounds were screened for their ability to cause a shift in the melting temperature of an ADAM-15 oligonucleotide using FRET melt. Two compounds, NSC 146771 and NSC 260594, produced a significant shift in the melting temperature; further experimentation, such as circular dichroism, cytotoxicity MTS assays, and RT-qPCR, was performed to confirm the ability of these small molecules to stabilize the G-quadruplexes within the ADAM-15 promoter. Neither compound showed cytotoxicity, and NSC 260594 showed an increased capacity for reducing the transcription of ADAM-15. Further pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic experimentation needs to be completed, but NSC 260594 shows potential to significantly decrease ADAM-15 expression and therefore improve the prognosis of breast cancer patients
