Modeling the herd prey response to individualistic predators attacks
In this paper, we consider predators hunting on prey gathered in groups and in such way exhibiting the possibility of reducing the predators pressure. To model this feature, however, we depart from the Holling type II (HTII) response function, in that we assume that a sufficiently large set of prey could respond to individualistic attacks and therefore induce the predator to renounce. The basic idea is described at first in a simple two-populations predator-prey system. It is then expanded considering the generalist predators to deal with two prey. In the first case, both are gathered in herds, and in the second one, one of the two instead behaves individualistically. The net outcome is an enhanced survival for the prey with respect to both the herding cases without and with predators feeding satiation (i.e., using the HTII response)
A model for lions–hyenas interactions
Competition is known in biology through various mechanisms and species often compete for resources indirectly. We consider a system consisting of a predator, prey, which is not fully consumed and converts to a secondary resource (carcasses), and scavengers, which feed on the carcasses. Such an ecosystem is a simplified sketch of interactions in the savannah between lions and spotted hyenas, with lions killing herbivore prey, especially ungulates, whose leftovers serve as primary food for the hyenas. Z-Type Control Methods on a Three-Species Model with an Invasive Prey
The process by which nature and evolution discriminate between species bound to survive or become extinct has always been an interesting phenomenon. One example of this selection is represented by biological invasions, when alien species spread into new environments causing ecological disruptions, alteration of native population dynamics and ecosystem dysfunctioning. In this paper, we concentrate on the introduction of the Eastern cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus) into the regions of northern and central Italy. This has influenced the local predator–prey dynamics of the indigenous European hares (Lepus europaeus) and red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), consequently producing a “hyperpredation” effect on hares. In this framework, we investigate this scenario with the objective of mitigating the negative effects of the invasion. Specifically, we devise and apply a Z-control technique in order to drive chosen populations toward a desired state that at least theoretically can ensure the survival of native species. The purpose of such a study is twofold: on one hand, this approach is employed with the aim of reducing the invasive population; secondly, it aims to avoid the extinction of native prey, i.e., the hare population
An Exploration of the Effects of Periodic Top Predator Interference and Hunting on a Predator-Prey System
We introduce two models for the investigation of damages that periodic passages of migrating animals may have on established ecosystems of a smaller scale. In the first one, the damage is only of “physical” nature, in which the population at the highest trophic layer ravages the territory where the other interacting species live, thereby reducing their survival capabilities but not obtaining any benefit out of this. In the second one, it is assumed that the periodic damage comes from a moving top predator, periodically crossing the habitat of the lower trophic level populations, chasing both of them and therefore getting a reward from this hunt. The underlying model is assumed to be of minimalist predator-prey type, in order to better elucidate the effect of the action of the top predator. While the pure interference model does not seem to produce relevant effects other than the presence in a two-dimensional subspace of neutrally stable trajectories, a behavior that is forbidden in the underlying basic predator-prey model, the superpredation of a migrating population in suitable conditions induces a stable equilibrium, which may undergo a Hopf bifurcation with specific parameter choices. This elementary investigation elucidates therefore a possible invasion mechanism where the migrating population spots an attracting ecosystem in which thriving is possible and settles in it, substantially altering it and affecting the native populations
Does a marginal contact with a native species living in a complex domain with a fractional dimension boundary represent a sufficient invasive mechanism for the establishment of a migrating population?
Animal migrations are dynamic phenomena that can change rapidly or even be lost entirely over time. In particular, when a migrant population finds favorable conditions in a region, it can settle there permanently. Since biological invasions represent a serious threat to biodiversity, we are interested in determining if and when a marginal contact of a moving population with a territory occupied by other populations is sufficient to trigger an invasion mechanism. The interaction problem of a migrant population with a residential one is considered, where the contact occurs just on the boundary of the region occupied by the native population. To study whether and how the migrants induce changes in the ecosystem subject to their transit, two models are considered. The former accounts only for damage on the native species, with no gain for the migrant population. In the second one, migrants are assumed to be predators and therefore gaining an advantage for survivability. The comparison of the two models’ behaviors gives insights on the invasion process. The theoretical analysis of the two models is complemented by numerical simulations. The models suggest that, even without a direct benefit for the migratory population, these kinds of interactions can have serious ecological consequences for the native population that can even lead to its extinction. Comparing the results, it is instead found that if the migrating species is a predator, even this very reduced interaction on the boundary is enough to trigger invasion and migrants permanently settle in the territory
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
