Investigation on the thermal gelation of Chitosan/β-Glycerophosphate solutions
This work deals with the effect of temperature on the thermal-gelation process of water solutions containing
chitosan β-glycerolphosphate disodium salt hydrate. In particular, the attention is focused on the role played by
temperature on the gel final properties, a very important aspect in the frame of drug delivery systems. The study
was performed by combining rheology and low field nuclear magnetic resonance, two approaches that revealed
to be highly synergic as they can detect different aspects of the developing polymeric network. This study
indicates that 30 °C represent a sort of threshold for both the gelation kinetics and the gel final properties.
Indeed, above this temperature, gelation kinetics was rapid and yielded to a strong gel. On the contrary, a slow
kinetics and a final weak gel occurred below 30 °C. Finally, rheology and low field NMR allowed, independently,
evaluating the time evolution of the network mesh size upon gelation
Rubber elasticity of polymer networks in explicitly non-Gaussian states. Statistical mechanics and LF-NMR inquiry in hydrogel systems
We present a statistical mechanics theory of rubber-like elasticity in swollen and unswollen polymer networks characterized by explicitly non-Gaussian distribution functions (Laplace's, Cauchy's, and continuous Poisson's in the exponential limit). An important outcome is the derivation of new families of statistical and mechanical laws, including a discussion of energy functions of strain invariants, which are reasonably simple for a model comparison with available data on polymer networks. Accordingly, a theoretical–experimental approach based on LF-NMR was devised to identify the most likely end-to-end length distribution in an arbitrary network. When this strategy is applied to agar 1 %, alginate 1 %, and scleroglucan 2 % hydrogels, it turns out that the end-to-end distribution should be never regarded as Gaussian even if, as in agar and scleroglucan systems, the normal statistics is the best among those here regarded. Remarkably, Poisson's distribution is proved instead to be the most realistic for the alginate hydrogel

Dissolution of irregularly-shaped drug particles: mathematical modelling
The prediction of drug dissolution profiles is crucial for elucidating the pharmacokinetic behaviour of drugs and the bioavailability of dosage forms. In this work, we develop a mathematical model to describe the dissolution process of irregularly shaped particles. We use a complete dissolution model that accounts for both surface kinetics and convective diffusion. The mechanistic relationship between the mass transfer coefficient and the local curvature is derived from the fundamental physical laws governing these processes. Our model theoretically shows that the dissolution rate depends nonlinearly on the surface curvature. The subsequent recrystallization process in the bulk fluid is also considered. The main result of this work is its simplicity, since only two coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations are needed to describe the dissolution process. Another remarkable advantage is the possibility to determine the model parameters using common independent techniques, so that the importance of the wettability of solids on the dissolution process can be evaluated. Finally, the proposed model demonstrated the importance of particle shape in describing the experimental dissolution data of theophylline monohydrate
Hydrophobically-modified PEG hydrogels with controllable hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance
This work reports on a novel method to synthesize hydrophobically-modified hydrogels by curing epoxy monomers with amines. The resulting networks contain hydrophilic poly(ethylene gly-col) (PEC) segments, poly(propylene glycol) (PPG) segments, and C18 alkyl segments. By varying the content of C18 segments, networks with different hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) are obtained. All networks show an amphiphilic behavior, swelling considerably both in organic solvents and in aqueous media. In the latter they display a thermosensitive behavior, which is highly affected by the network HLB and the pH of the solution. A decrease in HLB results in an Increment of the polymer weight content (wp) due to hydrophobic association. Furthermore, a reduction in HLB induces a remarkable increase in Initial modulus, elongation at break and tensile strength, especially when Wp becomes greater than about 10%. Low field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) experiments evi- dence that, when HLB decreases, a sudden and considerable Increase in hydrogel heterogeneity takes place due to occurrence of extensive physical crosslinking. Available data suggest that in systems with wp ≳10% a continuous physical network superimposes to the pre-existing chemical network and leads to a sort of double network capable of considerably improving hydrogel toughness
Polysaccharide-based hydrogels crosslink density equation: A rheological and LF-NMR study of polymer-polymer interactions
A simple relation between pendant groups of polymers in hydrogels is introduced to determine the crosslink density of (complex) hydrogel systems (mixtures of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) modified nanocellulose, alginate, scleroglucan and Laponite in addition of crosslinking agents). Furthermore, the rheological properties and their great potential connection to design complex hydrogel systems with desired properties have been thoroughly investigated. Hydrogel structures governing internal friction and flow resistance were described by the predominant effect of ionic, hydrogen, and electrostatic interactions. The relationship between rheological properties and polymer-polymer interactions in the hydrogel network is explained and expressed in a new mathematical model for determining the crosslink density of (crosslinked) hydrogels based on single or mixture of polymer systems. In the end, the combined used of rheology and low field nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (LF-NMR) for the characterization of hydrogel networks is developed
Structural evolution of salt-free aqueous Laponite dispersions: A study based on low-field NMR relaxometry and rheological investigations
The combination of Low-Field NMR relaxometry (LF-NMR) and rheological analyses was used to investigate the kinetics of aging and structural evolution of salt-free aqueous Laponite dispersions with concentrations ranging from 0.33 to 2.00 wt%. The examination of LF-NMR results reveals that the rate of nanoclay delamination increases with increasing Laponite concentration while its degree decreases. Furthermore, the LF-NMR results were interpreted together with rheological results to assess the kinetics of processes occurring on different length scales reflecting on the time evolution of the three-dimensional structure. The structural evolution is described by the definition and comparison of three different characteristic times. The LF-NMR decay time (tr) designates the time required for Laponite delamination. The induction time (ti) indicates when interparticle edge-face interactions become effective enough for incipient networking. The gelation time (tg) corresponds to sufficiently high degree of interparticle connectivity for the development of a macroscopic gel behavior. The comparison of ti and tg, on one hand, and tr, on the other hand, allows to conclude that for low concentration Laponite dispersions nanoclay delamination is a prerequisite for the formation of the new dispersion structure with a macroscopic gel behavior. Interestingly, the development of the new structure, based on orientation of clay disks into edge-to-face pattern and mutual interparticle attractive interactions, starts when the delamination process is still running
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
