Improving Parallel System Performance with a NUMA-aware Load Balancer
Multi-core nodes with Non-Uniform Memory Access (NUMA) are now a common architecture for high performance computing. On such NUMA nodes, the shared memory is physically distributed into memory banks connected by a network. Owing to this, memory access costs may vary depending on the distance between the processing unit and the memory bank. Therefore, a key element in improving the performance on these machines is dealing with memory affinity. We propose a NUMA-aware load balancer that combines the information about the NUMA topology with the statistics captured by the Charm++ runtime system. We present speedups of up to 1.8 for synthetic benchmarks running on different NUMA platforms. We also show improvements over existing load balancing strategies both in benchmark performance and in the time for load balancing. Elias-Fano Compression for Space-Efficient Rank and Select Structures
Bit vectors are an important component in many data structures. Such data structures are used in a variety of applications and domains including databases, search engines, and computational biology. Many use cases depend on being able to perform rank and/or select queries on the bit vector. No existing rank and select structure enabling these queries is most efficient both for space and for time; there is a tradeoff between the two. In practice, the smallest rank and select data structures, cs-poppy and pasta-flat, impose a space overhead of 3.51%, or 3.125% if only rank needs to be supported. In this paper, we present a new data structure, orzo, which reduces the overhead of the rank component by a further 26.5%. We preserve desirable cache-centric design decisions made in prior work, which allows us to minimize the performance penalty of creating a smaller data structure
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. An evaluative study on the effect of contention on message latencies in large supercomputers
Abstract — Significant theoretical research was done on in-terconnect topologies and topology aware mapping for parallel computers in the 80s. With the deployment of virtual cut-through, wormhole routing and faster interconnects, message latencies reduced and research in the area died down. This paper presents a study showing that with the emergence of very large supercomputers, typically connected as a 3D torus or mesh, topology effects have become important again. It presents an evaluative study on the effect of contention on message latencies on torus and mesh networks. The paper uses three MPI benchmarks to evaluate the effect of hops (links) traversed by messages, on their latencies. The benchmarks demonstrate that when multiple messages compete for network resources, link occupancy or contention can increase message latencies by up to a factor of 8 times. In other words, contention leads to increased message latencies and reduces effective available bandwidth for each message. This suggests that application developers should consider interconnect topologies when mapping tasks to processors in order to obtain the best performance. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. A Selective Profiling Tool: Towards Automatic Performance Tuning
We present some preliminary results of selective profiling in our efforts towards automatic performance tuning for scientific codes. Performance analysis and tuning are becoming very important with the increasing complexity and speed of high performance systems. Great efforts are necessary to tune applications for optimal performance on such systems. In our efforts to automate most, if not all, of the performance tuning process, we have developed a flexible profiling tool that can quickly pinpoint the performance bottlenecks and further refine the problem area. This is an important first step in our open framework with a rule-based approach for the ongoing PERCS project
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
