The author reports and analyses the status quo of school refusal in Japanese mentality with regard to the education, which complicates particularly this type of pathology. Psychopathology, treatments and prognosis of school refusal are discussed in relation to its framework such as family, school and society. Shirahashi Koichiro. However, little is known about the secondary manifestations of COPD in the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, we aimed to explore the long-term effects of gastrectomy in patients with spirometry-defined COPD or those at risk of COPD.Participants: Subjects included 87 patients either with COPD or at risk of COPD (symptomatic) who underwent gastrectomy between December 2003 and October 2013 (group A), and 174 patients either with COPD or at risk of COPD, matched by age (±5 years), sex, and forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) as percentage of predicted (FEV1% predicted) (±5%) (group B).Methods: All patients underwent routine blood chemistry and pulmonary function tests, arterial blood gas analysis, 6-minute walk test (6MWT), high-resolution chest computed tomography scans, and nutritional assessments. Results: The mean duration postgastrectomy was 18.3±15.4 years. The mean FEV1 and FEV1% predicted were 2.07±0.76 L and 74.6±24.5%, respectively. Univariate analysis indicated that group A patients had significantly lower body mass index, fat-free mass index, and serum hemoglobin and albumin concentration (all P=0.00), and walked a significantly shorter distance in the 6MWT (P<0.05). Multivariate linear regression analysis for the distance in the 6MWT indicated that increased residual volume (RV) to total lung capacity (TLC) as percentage of predicted (%RV/TLC) alone was an independent and significant predictor of reduced distances in the 6MWT.Conclusion: We concluded that nutritional insufficiency in patients with COPD (or those at risk of COPD) who previously underwent gastrectomy might lead to hyperinflation and consequently, decreased exercise capacity. Keywords: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, nutritional insufficiency, 6-minute walk tes

Japan's Proactive Role in Myanmar's Democratic Transition

    No full text
After 2010 general elections, Myanmar started to transform from an authoritarian to a semi-democratic government. With the democratic transition process, the new government initiated a series of reforms, including the loosening of political and economic restrictions and the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest. Following the 2012 by-election, the Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba recognized the election as a notable step in Myanmar's democratic transition. In May 2013, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe paid an official visit to Myanmar. Its was the first visit of a Japanese prime minister since 1977, signifying Japan's return to Myanmar after long decades. During Prime Minister Abe's visit to Myanmar, he expressed his readiness to assist Myanmar government's efforts for democratization and to improve infrastructure development through Official Development Assistance (ODA). In 2016, Tokyo announced the plans to contribute 800 billion yen over five years at public and private levels, based on the "Japan-Myanmar Cooperation Program", to support Myanmar's efforts for peace, national reconciliation and economic development. Based on this background, the research question is that why Japan has played such a proactive role in Myanmar's democratic transition under the leadership off Prime Minister Shinzo Abe

Current Status of Horonobe URL Project in Construction Phase

    No full text
The Horonobe URL project has been pursued by JAEA (Japan Atomic Energy Agency) to establish and demonstrate site characterization methodologies, engineering technologies, and safety assessment methodologies for HLW geological disposal in relevant geological environment with sedimentary rock and saline groundwater distributing in the Horonobe area, Hokkaido, Japan. In the Horonobe URL project, surface-based investigation phase (Phase I) has already completed in the fiscal year 2005, and then construction phase (Phase II) has initiated in the same year. Currently, construction of the underground facilities such as shafts/galleries which were designed in Phase I, investigations of the geological environment in the excavated shafts/galleries and confirmation of applicability of engineering technologies have been alternately carried out as Phase II activities of the project. During the construction so far, monitoring for the construction safety such as convergence measurements, tunnel wall observation, sampling of groundwater and rock, investigations for evaluating excavation damaged/disturbed zone (EDZ/EdZ) along shafts/galleries were carried out. In addition, a shotcrete construction test and a grout injection test by using low alkaline cement material were carried in the horizontal galleries. In this paper, status of the URL construction and research activities mentioned above are outlined as the current achievement of the Horonobe URL project.</jats:p
