    İslâm Tarihindeki önemli sahsiyetlerden birisi olan Abdullah b. Abbâs'ın siyâsî iliskileri bu çalısmada ele alınmıstır. Abdullah b. Abbâs'ın daha çok ilmî kisiligi ön plana çıkmasına ragmen saglam siyâsî kimligi sayesinde islâm Tarihinde önemli olayların içinde yer almıstır. Özellikle Ali b. Ebî Tâlib döneminde meydana gelen Cemel ve Sıffîn Savaslarında ve Tahkîm olayında önemli roller üstlenmis, haklı olduguna inandıgı kisilerin yanında yer almıstır. Emevîler döneminde kendisini daha çok ilme veren Abdullah b. Abbâs hayatını ilim ögrenmekle ve ögretmekle geçirmistir. Bu baglamda arastırmamızda Abdullah b. Abbâs'ın, döneminde katıldıgı siyasi faaliyetler yanında yapmıs oldugu ilmî çalısmalara da kısaca yer verilmistir.In this study the political relations of Abdullah b. Abbas, who is one of the most important personality in the history of Islam, is taken into cansideration. Despite his scientific individuality has been in the foreground, he participated in a lot of important events due to his trustworthy political personality. He undertook important parts, particularly in the wars of Cemel and Siffin and the event of Tahkim which occured in the period of Ali b. Ebi Talip. He was in comparison with the rightful person. In Emevi?s period, Abdullah b. Abbas, who devoted himself to science, lived with learning and teaching. In this context, his scientific studies, beside his political activities in which he participated, are mentioned shortly

    Hz. Ali, İslâm dünyasında Hz. Muhammed’e yakınlığı ve siyasi kişiliği sebebiyle özel bir konuma sahiptir. Bu sebeple onun güzel sözleri, hutbeleri ve şiirleri kayıt altına alınmış ve günümüze kadar ulaşmıştır. Arap, Fars edebiyatlarında geniş yer bulmuş olan vecize, nasihat, hutbe, mektup, emirnâme, şiir vb. Hz. Ali’ye atfedilen edebî miras, Türk edebiyatında da hatırı sayılır bir ilgiye mazhar olmuştur. Bununla birlikte Hz. Ali Dîvânı Arapçadan Türkçeye geç dönemlerde tercüme edildiği görülmektedir. Dîvânın tespit edilebilen en eski Türkçe tercümesi, XVIII. asrın velûd şair ve yazarı, “Salâhî” mahlasını kullanan Abdullah Selâhaddîn-i Uşşâkî (ö. 1197/1782)’ye aittir. Salâhî Hz. Ali Dîvânı’nı nazmen tercüme etmiştir. Pek çok manzum eseri bulunan Salâhî’nin bu çevirisiyle Hz. Ali Dîvânı, Türk edebiyatına kazandırılmıştır. Çağdaşı olan Müstakimzâde Süleyman Saadettin Efendi (ö. 1202/1787), Salâhî’nin tercümesini kendi tabiriyle “terbiye” ederek yeni bir çeviri oluşturmuş ve bu çeviri üzerinden Hz. Ali Dîvânı’nı şerh etmiştir. Müstakimzâde’nin tercümesi şerhli olmasından dolayı çok meşhur olmuştur. Eski harflerle iki defa basılmıştır. Salâhî çevirisi ise Müstakimzâde’ye ve dolayısıyla diğer mütercimlere örnek teşkil etmesine rağmen yeterince tanınmamıştır. Bu çalışma, Selâhaddîn-i Uşşakî’nin çevirisinin tenkitli metnini günümüz harfleriyle yayımlayarak hak ettiği ilgiye akademik bir katkı sağlamayı hedeflemektedir

    ABSTRACT Since the people almost always use language in various forms of communication to fulfill their interaction need, language holds an important part of human life. In the daily communication, however miscommunication may happen when the people communicate each other. It causes the speaker says something which contains an implicit meaning. In order to clarify what the speaker means by her/his utterance, the hearer has to find the interpretation of the utterance. Holy Qur‟an is the central religious text of Islam, which Muslims consider the verbatim word of God. It is mostly written in the hidden meaning which can be interpreted in many sides. Therefore, this study investigates the implicit meaning from the English translation of surah al Qomar by Abdullah Yusuf Ali. The objective of this study is to find out what implicit meanings of the sentences found in the English translation of surah al Qomar by Abdullah Yusuf Ali. This study uses Spearber and Wilson relevance theory which clarifies its analysis on the implicit meaning. The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative since the data are collected and analyzed without using statistic formula. The data are gathered from the English translation of surah al Qomar by Abdullah Yusuf Ali which contains implicit meanings. This study analyzes the data and makes the conclusion based on the relevance theory. The results of this study are that the implicit meanings on the English translation of surah al Qomar by Abdullah Yusuf Ali can be categorized into eight categories. They are telling about the Judgment day and Miracle of Prophet, the People of Noah‟s destruction, the People of „Ad‟s destruction, the People of Thamud‟s destruction, the People of Lut‟s destruction, the People of Pharaoh‟s destruction, the admonition of the Unbeliever, and the replying the sinner and the reward for the godfearing person

    Skripsi ini berjudul “Dynamic Equivalence in the English Translation of Sura Al-waqi’ah of The Holy Qur’an by Abdullah Yusuf Ali”, yang merupakan sebuah analisis tentang prinsip ekuivalensi dinamis yang terdapat dalam Q. S Al-Waqi’ah yang diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Inggris oleh Abdullah Yusuf Ali, dimana bahasa Arab sebagai bahasa sumber dan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa sasarannya. Landasan teori yang digunakan adalah teori Eugene A. Nida (1964) yang menjelaskan tentang prinsip-prinsip ekuivalensi dinamis (Dynamic Equivalence) dan teori Syihabuddin (2002) yang menitikberatkan pada teknik-teknik penerjemahan yang dapat digunakan dalam menerjemahkan kosa kata-kosa kata kebudayaan yang nantinya akan menghasilkan terjemahan yang ekuivalensi dinamis. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode kepustakaan untuk mencari teori-teori yang mendukung dan metode kualitatif untuk menganalisis data. Dari hasil analisis diperoleh bahwa ekuivalensi dinamis yang ditemukan pada terjemahan bahasa Inggris oleh Abdullah Yusuf Ali dalam Q.S Al- Waqi’ah pada umumnya merupakan pergeseran dalam tataran kata dalam bahasa sumber menjadi bentuk frase dalam bahasa target, namun tidak mengubah makna yang terkandung dalam bahasa aslinya, sehingga dihasilkan terjemahan yang bersifat ekuivalensi dinamis. Terjemahan Abdullah Yusuf Ali cenderung menggunakan teknik deskripsi, yaitu dengan menjelaskan satu kata di bahasa sumber dengan beberapa kata (frase) bahkan kalimat di dalam bahasa target dengan maksud agar makna bahasa aslinya dapat tersampaikan pada pembaca. The stratigrapy of the area is represented by, from bottom to top, Pre-Upper Cretaceous low grade metamorphics of Akdağmadeni Lithodem, which is cut by Paleocene Çağlayan Plüton. These basement rocks are uncomformbly overlain by middle Eocene Tokuş Formation, Kaletepe Volcanics and Pamukpinar Tuff. These units ar tectonically overlain by, Upper Creteceous Ilıca Formation and Tekelidağı melange. The Pliocene incesu formation and alluviums cover all these units. The tectonic deformation of the region is controlled by the Post-Middle Eocene N-S directed compressional tectonic regime.     The Political Thought of the Late H.H. Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Founder of the United Arab Emirates (1966 - 2004)

    This thesis highlights the political thought of H.H. Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, a man who made decisive contributions to the history of the twentieth century, and the various reflections of this political thought on the UAE, its people and the international community at large. In this regard, it explores and analyzes a multifaceted political thought that took its form in political practice in the establishment of the Federation, the management of crises and in the building of a prosperous enduring nation. Evaluating the factors that influenced the formation of the doctrinal matrix of Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, this thesis traces the background from within which Sheikh Zayed’s leadership skills evolved and developed. From his early years onwards, Sheikh Zayed made a firm commitment to undertake the considerable task of building a fully fledged state out of a divided tribal background, improve the lives of citizens, and carve a place for the UAE in the international arena. This research project illustrates the implications and dimensions of Sheikh Zayed's political thinking process exemplified in his discursive statements and actions. It documents and analyzes the career achievements of Sheikh Zayed, a statesman acknowledged by contemporary and future generations to have had significant impact on the political direction and overall development of the UAE. This impact also demonstrates the potential of his contribution to the field of political thought. One of this study’s primary conclusions is that the accomplishments of Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al-Nahyan during his rule have resulted primarily from his development of an integrated doctrine of governance that reflected his humanistic outlook. In this regard, at both the domestic and international levels, Sheikh Zayed’s political decisions and acts were undertaken with reference to this outlook

    Towards Divine Economics: Some Testable Propositions

    Throughout the human history, the religion has remained a fundamental feature of social construct and human behaviour. Religious orientation plays important role in shaping human perceptions about economic and non-economic activities. With few exceptions, religion has remained an un-explored area in economics. For most economists, narrative and metaphor have no place in a rational choice theory, which is a wrong belief. In fact, any approach that considers behavioural laws satisfying the criteria of objectivity, reproducibility, and refutability is scientific and falls in purview of rational choice framework. A few studies, however, do exist on economics of religion under rational choice concerning to households, groups, and entire “religious markets”. [Becker (1976); Iannaccone (1988, 1990, 1992, 1993); Mack and Leigland (1992)]. Rosenberg (1985) presents discussion of the limitations of neoclassical economic theory due to its reliance on exogenous differences in taste and preference. It is argued that these limitations cannot be circumvented by findings and theories in other disciplines (e.g., psychology), because any measurement of preferences must begin with neoclassical assumptions about rationality. The alternative to tasteendogeniety advanced by [Becker (1976)] is found to only circumvent the usual difficulties if “stable preferences” notion is interpreted as needs. Further advancement is not taking place because of the important heterogeneous variables, which have yet received little attention from economists. Such variables may be found in attitudes and values acquired by consumers in variety of social and religious environments.

    An analytical study of the theatre of the Syrian playwright Saadallah Wannous, with particular emphasis on the plays written after the 1967 war

    This study is an examination of the life and work of the Syrian dramatist Saadallah Wannous (1941-1997). Wannous's name is virtually unknown in the West; only two academic studies of any significance have appeared in English on this eminent and challenging writer, who was honoured by UNESCO at the end of his life. Even in the Arab world his standing rests largely upon his celebrity as a cultural icon, since professional performances of his plays are rare due to the decline of the theatre in the region, and little attention has been devoted to theatre studies by Arab academics. The two studies in English do not attempt to be comprehensive but focus on particular stages of Wannous's career. This study is, therefore, the first to encompass the full range of Wannous's work. To do so it combines an account of his life which seeks to comprehend the various forces that shaped his thinking with an analysis of his dramatic works. The study concentrates on the plays written in the years following the trauma inflicted on the Arab world by the catastrophe of their defeat in the Arab-Israeli war of June, 1967. Wannous's career can be divided into three phases: the immature plays of his young manhood which are influenced by European models and generally focus on the social condition of the individual; his middle period - the `theatre of politicisation', when his Marxist politics were the main factor shaping his drama; and his late works, which are characterised by an extraordinary freedom of thought and expression. The introduction places Wannous in his historical and sociocultural context and provides a brief background explaining the literary and theatrical traditions of the Arab world that influenced his activity as a dramatist. Each phase is then examined in turn and the plays are analysed in accordance with the focus of the study. This means that emphasis is given to the middle period, but no significant work is neglected. The study aims to trace the trajectory of Wannous's development using a variety of sources: the plays themselves, Wannous's own journalism and critical writings, interviews with his widow, his friends and colleagues, and numerous journals, books and articles, some of which contain important interviews with Wannous that shed light on his thought and ways of working. Use is also made of the two studies mentioned above. The study shows that Wannous's theatre was influenced by the key political, social and cultural developments of his time, and that he constantly sought to find forms that would express those transformations in dramatic terms

    Structural demography and growth patterns of Scirpus grossus L. / Ali Abdullah Majrashi

    Scirpus grossus L. is a principal rhizomatous weed in the rice fields, drainage and irrigation canals, river banks, abandoned rice fields and wasteland in Malaysia. This study describes the modular dynamics, spatio-temporal growth patterns of aerial plant and sub-terranean rhizome populations of this scourge on fertilized and unfertilized peat and paddy soils. The NPK fertilizer application at 100:30:30 ha-1 resulted in more robust aerial plant growth with ca. 253.5 ramets m-2 (mean dry aerial biomass of 23.2 g plant-1) compared with 235.6 ramets m-2 (16.3 g plant-1) in unfertilized peat soils24 weeks after planting of the mother plant. The parallel figures for plants growing on paddy soils of the Jawa series were ca. 97.08 ramets m-1 (12.19 g plant-1)(fertilized paddy soils) and 83.67 ramets m-1 (10.89 g plant-1) (unfertilized paddy soils) 24 weeks after planting of the mother plant. Mean ramets mortality was significantly higher in unfertilized paddy soils at 121.3 ramets m-2, while in the fertilized paddy soils this was only 34.7 ramets m-2, resulting respective net populations of ca. 218.8 ramets m -2 and 114.3 ramets m -2 in fertilized and unfertilized plots. In paddy soils mean ramets mortality in unfertilized paddy soils was ca. 8.58 ramets m-2, while this was only ca. 5.67 ramets m-2, leading to the respective resultant net populations of 91.41m-2 and 75.09 ramets m-2. Flowering set in earlier among ramets in fertilized peat soils with 103.2 ramets m-2 vis-a-vis 77.5 ramets m-2, 24 weeks after transplanting of the mother plant in unfertilized soil. Flowering set in earlier among ramets in fertilized paddy soils with 49.56 ramets m-2vis-a-vis the unfertilized soil registering ca. 47.79 ramets m-2, 24 weeks after transplanting of the mother plant. Fertilizer applications to either peat or paddy soils did not register any significant difference in mean plant height, chlorophyll contents, and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements vis-a-vis those plants devoid of fertilizer application. No measurable differences were registered in rhizome lengths over time of S. grossus plants devoid of fertilizer application compared with those growing in fertilized peat soils. Similarly patterns were observed among S. grossus populations in both fertilized and unfertilized paddy soils. The time- and space-mediated clonal growth of S. grossus did not register any significant preferential directionality and dispersion of aerial plants and their sub-terranean rhizomes irrespective of fertilizer application or soil types, but rather displaying opportunistic resource capture by aerial and sub-terranean modules. ANOVA and Tukey’s HSD tests, response surface, fractal dimension and fractal topography analysis under fertilizer application factor and differences soils (peat soils - paddy soils) were used in the study from the first week to the 24th week. Dispersion analyses of rhizomes was also employed. In circular statistics r (concentration), s (angular deviation), Rayleigh’s R and Rayleigh’s z were computed on the emerged ramets of S. grossus. Results of Rayleigh’s z test showed significant mean direction of ramets emergence for all replicates in the fertilized plots (p > 0.01). Significant mean direction was obtained only for replicate R1 for the unfertilized plots. No significant mean direction for replicates R2 and R3 of the unfertilized plots means that ramets emergence is distributed uniformly around the circle, that is originating from the mother plant. They occur when s, the dispersion given by the angular deviation is near the maximum (where 0 < s < 83.01). Dispersion analysis of ramets by circular statistics on S. grossus generated no special preferences in the direction of modules or emerged ramets as explained by the Rayleigh’s r, Rayleigh’s z, and mean angle of dispersion in pest and paddy soils. However, there were heavier concentrations of ramets in the eastern sector of the plot, presumably due to phototropic effect of sunlight. In response surface analyses in peat soils results showed the stationary points obtained for the unfertilized plots is at x-distance = 0.03 m, y-distance = - 0.06 m and time (t) = 9.8 months. This function predicted a maximum density of 178 plants m-2 to occur at the location and time. For the fertilized plot, the stationary point is at x-distance = 0.20 m, y-distance = -0.82 m and t = 11.31 months. The predicted density obtained was 291.02 plants m-2. While in paddy soils the best location and time in unfertilized soil was between x- distance 0.00 m and y- distance -0.14 m at t = 8.16 month, while in fertilized soil the location was between x- distance -0.13 m and y- distance 0.20 m and the best time at t = 8.48 month. In fractal topography analysis results showed value fractal dimension from gl=0 – gl=100 between area-covering and ranched network (1 2). The area-covering concentrated at gl=0 and gl=40 in both peat and paddy soils (fertilized and unfertilized). While after gl=100 – gl=255 sporadic distribution (D- 0) in peat (fertilizer and unfertilized) and unfertilized paddy soils. While for fertilized paddy soil, gl=100 – gl=255. The fractal dimension analysis method allows the structural complexity of such associations to be compared between plant communities, with regard to their potential for soil resource acquisition and utilization. In peat soil, distinct and partly not significant differences are found (fractal dimension between 1.52 ± 0.53 and 1.50 ± 0.59) in unfertilized and fertilized plots. In paddy soil, fractal dimension between 1.53 ± 0.55 and 1.52 ± 0.49) in unfertilized and fertilized plots. We found distinct and partly not significant differences between plant in peat and paddy soils, when analysing many small units of a complex root system association. In larger plant communities, a broad variety of below-ground structures are recorded in its entirety, integrating the specific features of single sub-structures. In that way, extreme fractal dimensions are lost and the diversity decreases. Therefore, the analysis of larger units of root system associations provides a general knowledge of the complexity of root system structures for heterogeneous plant communities. Under the prevailing experimental conditions in the studies, the following conclusions can be drawn, viz: (i) The optimal period of clonal growth for Scirpus grossus, in general was between 10-18 weeks after planting; (ii) Augmentation with different NPK fertilizer concentrations and at different water depths had the following effects on S. grossus growth in both fertilized and unfertilized peat and paddy soils, (a) Increased rate of natality and the population number of ramets, fortified by enhanced proliferation of subterranean rhizomes; (b) Decreased rates of ramets mortality; (c) Increased rate and production of inflorescence of the weed; and (d) Enhanced production of biomass vis-a-vis the control of various plant components. However, the NPK fertilizer treatment did not have a significant impact on the plant height; chlorophyll content; and chlorophyll fluorescence, registering non-significant difference in both fertilizer and control plants; (iii) Fertilizer concentration with water depth did have a significant impact on the following parameters; namely (a) plant height; and (b) inflorescence number; (iv) Aerial modular growth, dispersion, response surface, plant topography-fractal analyses on emerged ramets, and fractal dimension boxing analyses of subterranean rhizome modules confirmed that the fertilizer treatment (at NPK 100:30:30) did not have a significant and prevalent impact on the growth patterns of S. grossus
