This paper discussed the relationship between leadership style of transformational and the state of commitment to service quality among academic staffs in selected six public and private Malaysian Universities. It has been argued that excellent service quality performance is one of the key factors in building niche and having competitive edge that separates one from its competitors nationally and globally. Total useable questionnaires were 387 with a response rate of 36 percent from both private and public universities. The result revealed that there is a significant relationship between transformational leadership style and commitment to service quality among academic staff at the Malaysian universities. This study implies to the policy makers and academic leaders at the universities that they can focus in developing their academic staff, by tapping their potentials, inspiring them, promoting collaboration, motivating and reinforcing positive attitudes towards commitment to service quality. Future study should consider alternative modes of enquires such as employing the longitudinal method of data collection design and a nationwide survey covering samples from the whole population of the higher institutions of learning in Malaysia that would be more significant in making generalizations

This paper discussed the disparity on the state of commitment to service quality among academic staff in public and private Malaysian Universities. It has been argued that excellent service quality performance is one of the key factors in building niche and having competitive edge that separates one from its competitors nationally and globally.Total usable questionnaires were 387 with a response rate of 36 percent from both private and public universities. The results revealed that commitment to service quality among public universities academic staff at the Malaysian universities were higher than their counterparts in the private universities. This study implies to the policy makers and academic leaders at both university types should consider enhancing service quality as the university mission through ranking service quality as the number one priority through their academic staff commitment.Future study should consider alternative modes of enquires such as employing the longitudinal method of data collection design and a nationwide survey covering samples from the whole population of the higher institutions of learning in Malaysia that would be more significant in making generalizations

What is the state of job satisfaction among academic staff at Malaysian Universities?

    Get PDF
This paper aims to discuss the state of job satisfaction among the academic staff in public and private Malaysian Universities.Academic staff turnover at universities was reported to be at an alarming rate especially at the Private Higher Education Institutes (PHEIs) and past studies have found that the reason for leaving was the result of low job satisfaction. The total useable questionnaires were 387 with a response rate of 36 percent. The result revealed that the academic staff from both the public universities and private universities was satisfied with the overall job contents and contexts of their job. Ho wever, academic staff of both these universities have ranked “salary” as being “least satisfied”.This study implies that policy makers and academic leaders at the universities should seriously consider benchmarking their compensation system and practices with the best practices of other educational institutions or with other service industries. Other considerations would be the availability of research grants, funds for attending conferences, sabbatical leave and close relationships with peers and superiors and favorable working conditions which would also enhance the job satisfaction among the academic staff. Future studies should consider alternative modes of enquires such as employing the longitudinal method of data collection design and a nationwide survey covering samples from the whole population of the higher institutions of learning in Malaysia that would be more significant in making generalizations

Does job satisfaction mediate the relationship between leaders and academic staffs’ commitment to service quality at the Malaysian universities?

This paper discussed the mediating effect of job satisfaction on the relationship between perceived transformational leadership style and commitment to service quality among academic staff in Malaysian Universities. Total usable questionnaires were 387 with a response rate of 36 percent from both private and public universities. The result revealed that job satisfaction only partially mediates the relationship between transformational leadership and academic staffs‟ commitment to service quality. This study implies to the policy makers and academic leaders at the universities that there is a need to focus in developing their academic staff, by tapping their potentials, inspiring them, promoting collaboration, motivating and reinforcing positive attitudes towards commitment to service quality.Future study should consider inclusion of other the mediating variables, alternative modes of enquires and a nationwide survey covering samples from the whole population of the higher institutions of learning in Malaysia that would be more significant in making generalizations

Relationship between motivating change, sustaining momentum and revitalization in the management of change in a public financial institution in Malaysia

Revitalization is a crucial factor for the process of a successful. This study is designed to investigate the relationship between motivating change and sustaining revitalization momentum. It employed the quantitative research methodology to examine the said relationship against the real-life scenario of major change in a public financial institution in Malaysia–Bank A.Through mail survey questionnaire, a total of 74 managers at all levels had completed the said questionnaires which were utilized for the case study of this research. The findings of the study confirmed the positive relationship (association) of motivating change and sustaining momentum with revitalization. Other than contributing to the body of knowledge over a subject which is empirically scarce, the study further renewed the importance of the micro level analysis of a public financial institution in Malaysia i.e. managers, rather than only the macro level. The study takes pride on its originality and ends with comprehensive practical recommendations for the organization in blending in the elements of motivating change and sustaining momentum so as to arrive at the desired state of revitalization

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
