Monetary policy and the commercial banks: an overview
The relationship between monetary policy and economic activity is one of the basic questions of macroeconomics. Economists have addressed this question in a number of ways. The traditional approach focuses on the importance of the liability side of the bank balance sheet. However, the traditional approach becomes less relevant as the number of substitutes for conventionally defined money increases in consumer’s portfolio. Recently, discussion on this relationship has gone further to include both credit rationing and bank structure. Interest has also grown in exploring the possible links between Islamic banks and monetary policy, and the deregulation process in the banking system. As a result, the role of money supply as an operating target of monetary policy has been undermined. The deregulation of commercial banks has changed the transmission mechanism for monetary policy from money supply to interest rates and bank credi
Selected Poems of Abdul Ghafar Ibrahim
Is poetry art or is art poetry? Or what is poetry? What is art? There is art in creating poetry. And there are the poetic elements in creating painting/any form of art.
I have been involved in writing poetry since I was in high school. My first poem was published in 1965. During that time I also received formal training in art. Writing poetry to me then was only putting together words and phrases into ideas and stories. And painting to me at that time was selecting and juxtaposing colors into beautiful pictures on canvas.
Man changes in ideas, ideals and concepts as he grows older. Age and experiences mellow him. He encounters innumerable experiences both personal and impersonal. These experiences help him develop certain talents and abilities in himself.
An artist is not only born but also made. What I project in my thesis is the marriage of my artistic values with my ideas. In this marriage one can interpret my convictions, concepts and philosophy in life. I welcome people\u27s criticism, reception and perception towards them.
I strongly believe that poetry has a lot to offer to the whole civilization of human beings. Therefore art. It is only appropriate then that I explore further the tremendous role that my poetry plays in my paintings. The painting itself creates further dimension in reading and appreciating the contents of my poetry.
My exploration and development of this technique have brought a new horizon to me both as a poet and an artist. From words-poetry, I embark upon visual arts using my poems as the medium of expression. Poetry to me should no longer be embedded in its traditional printed book form. Instead, poetry can be painted on canvas, can be created into sculpture, kinetic art, happening, conceptual art, lettrism.
I call my art, Audio-Visual Art. It is so named because one has to read my poem while seeing the painting. In the process of reading it one gets the audio effect which has now been created into a painting. In reading the painting one starts to visualize the poem. The painting is now in its concrete form. And the piece is an art piece.
I am actually making art of a subject/theme by spelling the name/word of the subject. For example, the subject is the verb “ FLY “. What I do is write down the word FLY on my canvas. Fly is painted over and over again with different strokes and colors. In doing it I take into consideration the rhythm, vibration, vitality and energy of flying. I won\u27t stop creating until I have successfully created my own piece of art.
It is not my intention to explain in depth this media. I believe that the meaning in art cannot be fully explained. Art should allow for free interpretation. Failure to respect this belief would leave nothing for the viewers/gallery goers to journey into the meaning of the art. An artist is not a critic. Therefore he cannot put limitations on his work i.e. by explaining everything he means in his painting. Life is full of phenomena. Phenomena is experience. So let people teach and educate themselves in the appreciation of art. I hope that my audio-visual art has something to contribute to the international understanding which is badly needed today

Special measures’ applications for victims and vulnerable and intimidated witnesses: the way forward / Abidah Abdul Ghafar
Special treatment for victims and vulnerable and intimidated witnesses (VIWs) in a criminal process has developed over time in the United Kingdom, United States and Australia. This development has initiated the use of special measures‟ application in courts proceedings. In those countries, some measures to lessen stress and trauma of such witnesses undergoing a criminal process were introduced into the legislations. Yet, as many other Asian countries, Malaysia developed her victims‟ policy only in 1990s and issues relating to the protection of VIWs were raised within the criminal justice system a few years back. The tendency to put the standpoint into practice in the Malaysian legal system is demonstrated in the establishment of the Evidence of Child Witness Act 2007 (ECWA 2007) and the amendment of Section 272B of the Criminal Procedure Code. This paper aims at evaluating the current position of victims‟ and VIWs‟ rights and legal protection in the Malaysian criminal justice process. It elaborates on the rights of victims and other VIWs to special measures‟ applications in the court proceedings such as live TV-link, screens, removal of formal attire, intermediaries and visual aids communication. It advocates for the potential of special measures‟ application to accommodate victims‟ and VIWs to give testimony in court. The feasibility of video-recorded evidence as one of the means to facilitate traumatized victims and VIWs to give evidence and testimony in courts is also advocated in this paper

Students have to choose one project and make it as the case study for the task. Many topics were given by the lecturer and only one can be chose regarding their scope of work at their internship place
Optimisation of kaffir lime leaves (citrus hystrix) volatile oil extraction by Pressurised Liquid Extraction (PLE) using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) / Abdul Rahman Bin Abdul Ghafar
Kaffir lime leaf (Citrus hystrix) is a source of natural flavouring widely used for a long term in the Asian country. The major constituent of Citrus hystrix has been
reported is citronellal which is responsible for flavour. Usually kaffir lime leaves flavour available in the market is synthetic. Thus, this study is to introduce a natural
kaffir lime leaves flavour based on extraction. Generally, conventional method has many disadvantages like production of thermally destructive compounds in the extract, time consuming and lower yield of the extract obtained. Current extraction methods like hydrodistillation and Soxhlet extraction are tedious, labour and time consuming. Thus, the major objectives of this study were to optimise more efficient and rapid Pressurised Liquid Extraction to produce quality kaffir lime leaves oleoresin. Optimised Pressurised Liquid Extraction conditions were at a temperature of 65.65 oC and a static time of 5.02 minutes. Flavour profilling of the extract obtained from this optimised condition was also been carried out using GC-MS.
The compounds determined were sabinene, myrcene, α-pinene and citronellal. The concentration of the major marker compound, citronellal in the extract was 0.28 mg/100g. Moisture content in the fresh leaves was 59.22±0.39% and for
dried leaves was 13.15±0.27%. The total percentage yield of the extract obtained using optimised condition was 56.16%. The volatile oil was analysed by using GC-MS to identify the major marker compound and the flavour profile of
Citrus hystrix
Full reserve system and the Maqasid Shariah / Zuriyati Ahmad, Abdul Ghafar Ismail
The essence of the monetary system today is in using the fractional reserve banking system. Nonetheless, this system is not free of critics such as the fraud of making loans and creating deposits out of nothing which are argued to create distortion to the economy. Since 1930s, many economic scholars have debated the use of full reserve system as an alternative tool of monetary system.Islamic scholars also argue and reject the working of fractional reserve banking system and propose the idea of full reserve system. From the view of Islamic scholars, the full reserve system should be applied to avoid the riba’ in the monetary system. Hence, this study tries to assess whether the use of full reserve system can attain the Maqasid Shariah to support the alternative banking system. Using the argument on fractional reserve system, discussion on the
concept of full reserve system, analysis of the impacts of full reserve system and the support from Quran and Hadith, this study concludes that the injustice and riba’ can be avoided under thefull reserve system, hence, attaining the Maqasid Shariah
