The Development of a Computer Model for the Cat Lung
This thesis deals with the computer simulation of the static and the dynamic responses of the cat lung. Detailed morphometric and elasticity data for the different generations of blood vessels have been used to determine the hemodynamic resistance and the compliance for each generation. The static model developed on this basis has been extended to successfully simulate the dynamic responses. Chapter 1 details the experimental methods used and introduces the static experiments. The discussion on the static experiments provides insight into the results obtained. Chapter 2 describes the development of the static model from the detailed morphometric and elasticity data available for the cat lung. The static model predictions are compared with the data obtained from the laboratory. Chapter 3 introduces and describes the dynamic experiments. An attempt has been made to explain the dynamic behavior of the lung on the basis of an electrical analog with resistors and capacitors to represent the hemodynamic resistance and compliance respectively. Chapter 4 presents the development of an electrical analog to model the dynamic responses of the cat lung. The methods used in modelling the responses are presented. Chapter 5 discusses the results, the successes and shortcomings of all the dynamic models. The deviations of the model predictions from the data are discussed and the model is modified accordingly. Chapter 6 lists the experimental observations and discusses the adequacy of the final model, i.e., model 4. A comparison between the original Zhuang model and model 4 is also provided

Transient Analysis of Combined Natural and Forced Thermal Convection in an Annulus Between Rotating Spheres
A numerical technique is developed to analyze the transient combined natural and forced thermal convection in an annulus between rigid spheres rotating about a fixed axis. The annulus is filled with an incompressible Newtonian fluid. Initially, the spheres and the fluid are stationary and at thermal equilibrium. At t = 0, impulsive angular velocity and temperature increase are imposed simultaneously upon the spheres. The inner and outer spheres are, hereafter, maintained in different constant rotational rates and uniformly distributed temperatures. A uniform gravitational field acts parallel to the axis of rotation. The density in the body force term of the momentum equation is modeled by the Boussinesq approximation. An implicit finite difference scheme, Crank-Nicolson two-step formulation, is employed to finite difference the coupled time-dependent Navier-Stokes and energy equations. The resulting system of algebraic equations are then solved by employing the Gaussian elimination method. Transient motion and heat transfer phenomena are thus analyzed. As a special case, the steady state solution is obtained as time approaches infinity. Results for the stream function, the angular velocity function, and the temperature distribution are presented in contour forms for various times. Furthermore, the transient torque and overall rate of heat transfer at both inner and outer spheres are provided for use in engineering applications
The Analysis and Optimization of a Respiratory Flowmeter
This thesis presents an analysis of an instrument which is used to assess respiratory function. This instrument is designed to measure respired gas volumetric flowrate. An instrumentation problem related to physiology is obtaining an accurate, efficient and economic measurement of respiratory gas flowrate in humans and laboratory test animals. This thesis develops the design criteria and the prototypes for optimal pneumotachometers (PTMs) for human and animal application. The PTMs studied are screen type resistive element flowmeters designed to efficiently measure respiratory gas volumetric flowrate at expiration and/or at inspiration. A mathematical model based on a force balance describes the PTM pressure drop across a single fine-mesh, square-weave wire screen. The pressure drop is described as a function of the fluid properties, the screen geometric properties and the PTM geometric properties involved in this phenomenon. Experimental data taken with steady-state gas flow at room temperature are shown to correlate with the mathematical model. This thesis also describes an analog integrator which utilizes a PTM flowrate signal. The PTM and integrator can be used to obtain both respired gas flowrate data and respired gas volume data for clinical and research applications
Yeats’s Legacy and Literary Tourism: A Study of the Yeats Winter School in Sligo /
Literary tourism is of increasing importance within the field of cultural and heritage tourism
yet remains under-represented in academic literature. Smith, et al. (2010, p. 108) define it as a
“tourism activity motivated by interest in an author, a literary creation or setting, or the literary
heritage of a destination”. The typical profile of a literary tourist is that of a well- educated
holidaymaker who is seeking an authentic experience, may have heard about the place’s
linkage with a writer but may not have high levels of knowledge about the actual work of
the writer. The socio-economic characteristics of literary tourists indicate a pre-dominance of
more educated visitors from a higher social class and income grouping (Smith, et al., 2010;
Timothy & Boyd, 2003). These characteristics are particularly relevant to the concept of the
‘literary pilgrim’ who has an emotional connection as well as a “more intimate relationship
with the author” (Robinson and Andersen, 2004). Gentile and Brown (2015) describe the
“widening scope of literary tourism, its arguable transition from niche to mass tourism, and its
attempt to link high and popular culture”. The growing popularity of literary festivals as well as
other related literary trails, routes and events provides evidence of this.
This study focuses on the importance of Yeats’s literary connection and legacy in attracting
visitors to Sligo and it provides a profile of the literary tourist that includes the literary ‘pilgrim’
or enthusiast visiting Sligo. The study further explores characteristics, motivations, and
literary awareness as well as experiences and levels of satisfaction among visitors or literary
‘pilgrims’ attending the Yeats Winter School in 2016. Overall, respondents are positive about
their experiences of Sligo as a literary destination and consider Yeats’s legacy to be valuable
from a tourism perspective. However, the outcomes of this study indicate a need for a more
strategic and collaborative approach to the development and marketing of Sligo as a literary
destination including a cohesive communications strategy.ye

Remembering the 'comfort women': connected histories and the politics of solidarity
At the height of Japan's military campaign and territorial expansion during World War II, the Imperial army and its colonial government in Korea coordinated the management and organisation of the largest known network of militarised sexual slavery in recorded history. But for over 40 years, it appeared that the world had forgotten its existence. Following the re-emergence of the so-called ‘comfort women’ in the late-1980s, scholars and activists alike have since grappled with questions of what it means to acknowledge the ‘comfort system’ as history, and how we may begin to remedy the exclusion of its victims from our memory.
In an examination of the ‘comfort women’ memory movement in South Korea and the United States, this thesis looks at the ways in which state and local actors have attempted to remember the ‘comfort women’ and seek out justice on their behalf. On this account, the author asks not only what it means to reimagine the ‘comfort system’ as having global-historical significance, but also explores the narrative logics that underlie commemorations and inform individual understandings of what it means to act in solidarity with its survivors

El nucleo del trastorno límite de personalidad: una hipotesis integradora
In this article two different approaches to borderline personality disorder are considered. The first comes from psychonalytical tradition (Otto Kernberg), the second one is inscribed in the cognitive-behavioural context (Marsha Linehan). The integration of booth is atteined by the author through theoretical explanations and clinical observations. The main concept to explain the characteristics of the borderline personality disorder is the disorganization of attachment in early chilhood, derived from Bowlby’s theory of attachment.El autor considera el trastorno límite de personalidad desde dos perspectivas, la psicoanalítica, con especial referencia a la teoría de Kernberg, y la cognitivo-conductual, inspirada en el trabajo de Linehan. El artículo plantea la posibilidad de integrar ambas perspectivas tanto desde el punto de vista teórico como clínico, basándose en el concepto de desorganización del apego, extraído de los estudios de Bowlby sobre apego en los primeros años de vida del niño y aplicándolo a la comprensión de las características del trastorno límite de personalidad
