    D2 shape distribution and artificial neural networks for 3D objects recognition

    In this paper, we propose a 3D object recognition approach, based on the shape distribution D2 and artificial neural networks. The challenge is to discriminate between similar and dissimilar shapes by finding a shape signature that can be constructed and classified quickly. We propose a connectionist system to recognize 3D objects in VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) format. The key idea is to represent the signature of an object as a shape distribution sampled from a shape function measuring global geometric properties of an object. The proposed strategy is the following: from a polygon object to be recognized, a triangulation is performed. Then, distances are calculated between two random points of the triangulated surface of the 3D object. The frequency of these distances will be represented by a normalized histogram. The values of these histograms feed a multi-layer neural network with back- propagation training. We demonstrate the potential of this approach in a set of experiments, which proved our system could achieve above 91.7% recognition rate. In addition, to evaluate the efficiency of our method, we compare our classifier with Support vector machine and k- nearest neighbours. The simulation results highlight the performance of the proposed approach.  </jats:p

    41 p.In the past few years, we have seen a rise in autonomous robots that are able to navigate and operate in a variety of diff erent environments. Autonomous navigation robots are now capable of moving around in a given space without human intervention. They can navigate independently, avoid obstacles and fi nd their way back to a starting point. Research in the development of autonomous navigation robots is intended to enhance their autonomy in executing diff erent tasks of varying complexity levels. One of these tasks is localization, mapping, and path planning. Robot localization is the process of defi ning the location of the mobile robot as it navigates through its environment. Mapping addresses the problem of collecting spatial models of the environment by the robot as it navigates. Path planning is the process of planning an obstacle-free trajectory for the mobile robot to navigate from a starting position toward a given goal destination. This project introduces a simulation of a mobile robot navigating in a closed indoor environment. The robot uses a lidar sensor to collect data about its environment in order to build a model map of it that will be used later on for path planning purposes.     Paratext as Moral-Ethical Orientation in Harriet Jacobs's <i>Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl </i>(1861)

    In the preface to her autobiography, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Written by Herself (1861), Harriet Jacobs makes explicit her “desire to arouse the women of the North to a realizing sense of the condition” of enslaved people (Jacobs n. pag.). The preface itself constructs an implied reader and gears their moral judgement towards condemning slavery. As is characteristic of the autobiographical genre, Jacobs’s narrative identifies her simultaneously as author, narrator, and protagonist. Thus, her “Preface by the Author” blurs the distinction between her textual status as narrator and her extratextual status as author. This conflation is key to constructing the implied reader of the narrative: the narrator does not address mere narratees but constructs the latter as real-life readers – women living in the Northern US – whose reading experience, the preface claims, could prompt a real-life sense of personal responsibility in the struggle against slavery. The rhetoric of the preface can be analyzed through the combined lenses of deictic theory and narrative ethics. Jacobs’s moral-ethical deixis includes markers like right/wrong, good/bad and true/false. Jacobs orients the implied reader towards Abolition, by instructing them to judge “Freedom” as good and “Slavery” as bad. Correspondingly, Jacobs associates slavery with “persecut[ion]” and “suffering” by presenting it as a “deep, and dark, and foul ... pit of abominations” (Jacobs n. pag.). This moral deictic system is solidified by Jacobs’s claim, as author-narrator, that to validate these ethical coordinates is to “realiz[e]” the truth (Jacobs n. pag.). The moral deixis of Jacobs’s preface is instrumental in constructing what James Phelan defines as “the ethics of the telling” and “the ethics of reading/reception” of the narrative (Phelan n. pag.). The invitation of the implied audience into Jacobs’s ethical perspective simultaneously assigns them “moral responsibilities” and “obligations” (Phelan n. pag.) vis-à-vis the diegesis and its narratio

    Dynamic Delegation Based on Temporal Context

    AbstractDelegation is a very important part of the administrative process in access control systems; it provides resiliency and flexibility regarding to the management procedure. Delegation is the process of granting a specific authorization from a user to another user of the same system to carry out some functions on his behalf. The delegation, although widely used, is modeled in very little security policies because of its complexity. In this paper we aim to consider the delegation dynamically based on temporal context, to this end we redefine delegation for OrBAC using temporal nonmonotonic description logic. OrBAC is an access control model; it provides the mean to specify contextual authorizations, which facilitates modeling delegation features such as temporary delegation, multiple delegation, revocation, etc. The description logic that we use for the re-formalization process is T- JClassicδɛ. This logic gives the mean to specify nonmonotonic authorizations, and a better representation of the temporal aspects specific to a given delegation. This new representation augments the expressivity of the model and therefore it facilitates even more the representation and the management of the delegation characteristics

    Training and assessing perspective taking through A Hole New Perspective

    In recent years, the use of Augmented and Virtual Reality (ARNR) has taken a larger role within training and education of various fields, but not every individual experiences the benefits that AR and VR technology are thought to provide. The perspective taking skill of an individual may be a good indicator of the effectiveness that AR and VR training can achieve. However, we found that the tests in other research targeting small scale perspective taking are few and limited, as perspective taking is often hard to distinguish from mental rotation. Therefore, we designed and developed A Hole New Perspective, a serious game created specifically to test and train an individual’s perspective-taking ability. A Hole New Perspective focuses on the relationship between a 3D object floating in the air and a 2D hole on a moving wall. The core game mechanics consists of having the player rotate the object so that it fits in the hole, before the wall hits the object. Because players do not always have an aligned view with the hole, they have to call on their spatial perspective-taking abilities, in addition to mental rotation. We tested the game with a variety of test subjects, and compared these test results with the Perspective Taking/Spatial orientation Test. Early results have shown that performance in the game corresponds to mental rotation ability. Furthermore, there are indications that improvement in spatial ability through the game is selectively present for those with lower spatial abilities. This further substantiates the need for a more individualized approach when offering AR and VR in education.     ‘The Silence of Muhammad’ is a novel written by Salim BACHI, published in 2008, it is a fictionalized story based on historical facts recounting different facets of the life of the Prophet of Islam Mohammed – Peace be upon Him. He was a man like no other who began his life as a shepherd in Mecca. Then he became a successful merchant. In this novel, the author relates another aspect of the life of the Prophet according to the eyes of two of his wives, notably, Khadidja and Aicha. Hence, this paper tries to highlight the different facets of the life of the Prophet of Islam; our attempt is placed on the humanistic side of the Man before being a Prophet. Besides, attention is placed on the existence of women in the life of the Prophet through his two wives

    Antifungal activity of plant extracts against tomato’s fungal diseases

    Fungal diseases have always been a major problem for tomato crops. Growers generally use chemical fungicides to treat this type of diseases. However, these products are toxic to the environment and the consumer, especially if the pre-harvest interval is not respected. The present study aims to find non-polluting alternatives. Five plant extracts (Peganum harmala, Ocimum basilicum, Caralluma europaea, Nerium oleander and Eucalyptus globulus) are tested for their in vitro efficiency against four pathogenic fungi: Alternaria solani, Botrytis cinerea, Botrytis cinerea taken from fruit, Phytophthora infestans and Oïdium oxysporum. The obtained results reveal that the extract of Ocimum basilicum is the most effective on the studied fungi. Indeed, at a concentration of 0.4%, it inhibited at 80% the development of Botrytis cinerea and at 81% Oïdium oxysporum at a concentration of 0.2%. Followed by Peganum harmala and Nerium oleander, which also showed an antifungal effect (Peganum harmala inhibited up to 73% of the growth of Alternaria solani at a dose of 4%). The extracts of Caralluma europaea and Eucalyptus globulus proved similar antifungal activity, which exceeded 30%. The study of the fungal/fungistatic effect revealed that all the studied extracts have a fungal effect against the treated fungi. The phytochemical screening showed that the plants extracts are rich in polyphenols especially Ocimum basilicum, Peganum harmala and Nerium oleander. This leads us to deduce that the antifungal activity may be due to this
