Cold cracking in DC-cast high strength aluminum alloy ingots: An intrinsic problem intensified by casting process parameters

    No full text
For almost half a century the catastrophic failure of direct chill (DC) cast high strength aluminum alloys has been challenging the production of sound ingots. To overcome this problem, a criterion is required that can assist the researchers in predicting the critical conditions which facilitate the catastrophic failure of the ingots. This could be achieved at first glance by application of computer simulations to assess the level and distribution of residual thermal stresses. However, the simulation results are only able to show the critical locations and conditions where and when high stresses may appear in the ingots. The prediction of critical void/crack size requires simultaneous application of fracture mechanics. In this paper, we present the thermo-mechanical simulation results that indicate the critical crack size distribution in several DC-cast billets cast at various casting conditions. The simulation results were validated upon experimental DC-casting trials and revealed that the existence of voids/cracks with a considerable size is required for cold cracking to occur.Materials Science & EngineeringMechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineerin

Thinking About Leadership by Nanerl Keohane (Featured Publication & Author Interview)

    No full text
Our guest interviewer this month is Susan R. Madsen. Susan is an associate professor of management at Utah Valley University and an independent leadership and change consultant. She has been heavily involved for many years in researching the lifetime development of prominent women leaders. During the course of her work, she has personally interviewed numerous women university presidents, governors, and international leaders. Her books include On Becoming a Woman Leader: Learning from the Experiences of University Presidents (2008) and Developing Leadership: Learning from the Experiences of Women Governors (2009)

    Making Students Aware of Bias

    No full text
Created by Richard W. Madsen of the University of Missouri--Columbia, the following exercise can illustrate the problem of bias in estimators to students in statistics courses. In some advanced courses an alternative estimator may be presented and properties of this estimator may be investigated via Monte Carlo studies. The author uses both text and tables to help better illustrate this concept. He uses specific data sets to give a more hands on approach to learning these theories

Educational Programs for Older Adults in Salt Lake County: Filling the Gaps

    No full text
Interviews with 32 directors of educational programs were conducted to create a description of programs for older adults in Salt Lake County and its surrounding area, and to find aspects in common among programs with high enrollment. Program directors also shared their views on obstacles to the program, successful components of an educational program, the development of new classes, and community support. A historical overview of adult education and the description of older adult education programs in the United States is provided. Programs for older adults in the Salt Lake county area are compared to national offerings. The author identifies resources and needs in Utah program offerings. The categories in which needs are found are: Four-year colleges and universities, Institutes for Learning in Retirement, vocational training, Shepherd\u27s Centers, museums and libraries, OASIS, and intergenerational programs. The need for education among administrators and instructors of older adults is emphasized. Partnerships between programs, policymakers, community leaders and organizations, and older adults are seen as the solution for filling the gaps in older adult educational program offerings in Salt Lake county

Richard Madsen, Democracy’s Dharma: Religious Renaissance and Political Development in Taiwan.

    No full text
Democracy’s Dharma is a study of how the “religious renaissance” in Taiwan since the lifting of martial law in 1987, has contributed to the development and stability of Taiwanese democracy. The author, Richard Madsen, offers the rare perspective of a former Catholic missionary to Taiwan who later became a sociologist and a recognized authority on American civil society and public life (Habits of the Heart, 1985; the Good Society, 1991), on revolutionary morality and social transformation in t..

Madsen v. Women\u27s Health Center, Inc.: The Constitutionality of Abortion Clinic Buffer Zones

    No full text
This note will discuss the new standard introduced by the United States Supreme Court, the Court\u27s rationale behind its introduction, and the standard\u27s application to the facts of Madsen. Next, the author will explore how this standard will influence the decisions arid injunctions already implemented by state courts and how the standard may result in reduced protection for women\u27s reproductive rights. Finally, the author will explain why the states\u27 interest in protecting clinic access is strong enough to justify the continued use of buffer zones despite the stricter standard courts must apply

The Effect of Wind Power on Electricity Prices in Denmark

    No full text
This report is the result of a special course taken by the author at IMM DTU under the guidance of professor Henrik Madsen. The aim of the project is to analyze the influence wind energy has on the electricity spot price in Western Denmark and investigate how information about wind power production can be used to model the electricity spot price. Various model types were tried, giving very different performance. Here, only the models that performed best are discussed in order to keep focus on the projects goal

Transforming personal narratives: An evaluation of a songwriting workshop for rural women

    No full text
Madsen, WL ORCiD: 0000-0002-6136-8939The purpose of this article was to evaluate the contribution to the social and emotional well-being of rural women of a 3-day songwriting workshop. Six participants wrote songs and performed these locally and at the Women of the World Festival. Guided by narrative inquiry and transformative learning theory, this case study included data from reflective journals, one-on-one interviews, and written songs. Vignettes of the women’s key life moments were constructed and analyzed thematically. Four themes were identified: the importance and influence of personal experiences on songwriting, learning from process and one another, intrapersonal benefits, and interpersonal benefits. The article argued songwriting workshops provide opportunities for participants to reflect on experiences and to transform their worldviews. That is, songs and the songwriting process can help participants to restory their lives and enhance their sense of social and emotional well-being. © The Author(s) 2019
