Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Demographic analysis of four elasmobranchs species of the northwestern Mexican Pacific
No full textDebido a las características de sus historias de vida, los elasmobranquios son más susceptibles a ser afectados negativamente por la pesca. Para conocer los efectos de la pesca es necesario aplicar modelos pesqueros que pueden llegar a demandar un alto contenido de información. La información pesquera de elasmobranquios en México es incipiente, y todavía no permite la aplicación de modelos pesqueros formales. Como una alternativa, en el presente trabajo se aplican modelos demográficos, tomando en cuenta las características biológicas poblacionales de cuatro especies de elasmobranquios del Pacífico Noroeste mexicano, planteando diferentes escenarios que toman en cuenta diferentes tasas de supervivencia, un 37% de incertidumbre de capturas no registradas oficialmente y el período de veda actual para esta pesquería. Las especies de tiburones elegidas fueron M. henlei y M. californicus, mientras que las especies de rayas elegidas fueron Rhinobatos productus y Raja inornata. Se realizaron análisis de elasticidad para conocer qué tasa vital de la vida de los elasmobranquios es más importante para el crecimiento poblacional. Los resultados de los análisis demográficos indican que bajo una mortalidad natural todas las especies son productivas (ʎ˃1,r˃0), cuando se agrega una mortalidad por pesca la única especie que mantiene un crecimiento poblacional es M. henlei. Asimismo, cuando se incorporó el porcentaje no reportado de captura a la mortalidad por pesca, M. henlei fue la única especie que pudo mantener un crecimiento poblacional superior al estable (ʎ=1,r=0), pero cuando se incorporó el posible efecto de la veda a la mortalidad por pesca, M. henlei y R. productus fueron las únicas especies que tuvieron un crecimiento poblacional superior a la estabilidad poblacional. Los análisis de elasticidad indican que la proporción de elasticidad es mayor para la tasa de supervivencia de los estadíos juveniles, en comparación con la tasa de supervivencia y la tasa de fecundidad de los estadíos adultos. Estos resultados permiten inferir que el período de veda debe ser reevaluado debido a que no todas las especies se ven afectadas positivamente en su crecimiento poblacional y los planes de manejo deben enfocarse de acuerdo a las diferentes estrategias de las historias de vida de dichos organismos.Due to the characteristics of their life histories, elasmobranchs are more susceptible to be adversely affected by fishing. To understand the effects of fishing, it is necessary to apply fisheries models that require a high information content. The information of elasmobranchs fisheries in Mexico is emerging, and still does not allow the application of formal fisheries models. As an alternative, in the present work, we apply demographic models, taking into account the biological characteristics of the population of four species of elasmobranchss of the Pacific Northwest Mexican. We pose different scenarios that include different survival rates, 37% of uncertainty of catch not officially registered and the current ban period for this fishery. The species of sharks chosen were M. henlei and M. californicus, while the species of skates chosen were Rhinobatos productus and Raja inornata. Elasticity analysis were conducted to know which elasmobranchs rate of vital life is more important to the population growth. The results of demographic analysis indicate that under only a natural mortality all species are productive (ʎ˃1,r˃0). When you add a fishing mortality, the only species that maintains a population growth is M. henlei. Also, when we add the percentage of uncertainty of catch not officially registered to the fishing mortality, M. henlei was the only species that was able to maintain a population growth higher than the stable (ʎ=1,r= 0), but when the current closure period was taken into account to the fishing mortality, M. henlei and R. productus were the only species that had a population growth greater than the population stability. The elasticity analysis indicate that the proportion of elasticity is greater for the survival rate of the juvenile stages, in comparison with the rate of survival and the fertility rate of the adult stages. These results allow us to infer that the period of closure must be re-evaluated due to the fact that not all species are being affected positively in their population growth and the management plans must be approached according to the different strategies of the life histories of these organisms
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
