Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Full text linkWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
Full text linkWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textLAUREA MAGISTRALEIl mondo dell’Antropocene ha esaurito i suoi frutti e oggi ne stiamo pagando un prezzo che sarà destinato ad aumentare. La fragilità della contemporaneità si misura ormai sul termometro, che di anno in anno rimarca la necessità di cambiare le cose. Ecco perché questa tesi cerca un confronto con le Alpi, per cambiare punto di vista, per rimettere al centro un territorio che per secoli è rimasto al margine. Il titolo “Finis terrae” è una provocazione che fa perno sul concetto di limite verticale di questo territorio vasto per estensione ma anche per ricchezza culturale. Le Alpi hanno attraversato mutamenti di ogni genere ma mai fino a oggi sono stati così intensi. Da questo luogo abbiamo la possibilità di leggere ciò che sta accadendo e che cosa ci aspetta in futuro, da qui possono nascere progetti che cercano di trovare alternative allo stato caotico in cui la società odierna vive. Da un passato di emarginazione, poi di sfruttamento, poi di abbandono le Alpi hanno visto deturpato il proprio paesaggio, quindi le proprie culture, e con questa ricerca esse diventano scena e protagoniste di un nuovo modo di concepire l’abitare. Il tema ambientale è declinato in maniera più intima, l’individuo diventa comunità per mezzo del territorio e del paesaggio e viceversa. Un nuovo progetto, un nuovo modello che inscenano e ricercano una riconnessione tra Uomo e Natura, quindi fra individui.The world of the Anthropocene has exhausted its fruits and today we are paying a price that is bound to increase. The fragility of contemporaneity can now be measured on the thermometer, which year after year underlines the need to change things. This is why this thesis seeks a confrontation with the Alps, to change the point of view, to put back at the centre an area that for centuries has remained at the edge. The title ‘Finis terrae’ is a provoking statement that hinges on the concept of the vertical limit of this territory, which is vast in extension but also in cultural richness. The Alps have gone through all kinds of changes, but never before have they been so intense. From this place we have the possibility to read what is happening and what awaits us in the future, from here can arise projects that try to find alternatives to the chaotic state in which today’s society lives. From a past of marginalisation, then of appropriation, then of abandonment, the Alps have seen their landscape and thus their cultures disfigured, and with this research they become the scene and protagonists of a new way of conceiving life. The environmental theme is declined in a more intimate way, the individual becomes a community through the territory and the landscape, and vice versa. A new project, a new model that stages and seeks a reconnection between Mankind and Nature, hence between individuals

Full text linkLAUREA MAGISTRALECosì come l’architetto legge ed interpreta la città, sintetizzandone forme, volumi e proporzioni in un disegno dando vita ad un nuovo progetto, così il fotografo individua, isola e compone i ‘dispersi frantumi dell’esterno’ in una sola immagine, fissando sulla pellicola la propria visione di quegli elementi. Passando dalla scala urbana a quella del paesaggio, la distinzione tra questi due processi diventa sempre più confusa. Progettare nel paesaggio significa mettersi in relazione con molteplici fattori nello stesso momento, costantemente in bilico tra elementi naturali ed elementi artificiali. La fotografia diventa, in questo caso, uno strumento indispensabile tanto quanto lo studio del luogo e della sua storia. Di fronte all’opera di Luigi Ghirri, maestro della fotografia contemporanea, lo sguardo si sente a casa, anche senza capire fino in fondo perché. In quel “non capire” si è stabilita un’attrazione, una prossimità, in cui trascorrono innumerevoli corrispondenze. Forse perché si riconoscono le radici della sua luce particolare e perché pare di ritrovare qualcosa di familiare nei suoi luoghi deputati. Ghirri lascia che si crei uno spazio (interpretativo, mentale, reale, profondo) tra lo scatto e l’intento concettuale. In questo spazio lo spettatore può divertirsi a lasciare correre i suoi pensieri nelle immagini, e decidere se andare verso una lettura filosofica, poetica, nostalgica, o se ricondurla al periodo storico in cui è stata scattata. In questa stessa direzione, nel pensare per immagini, si è scelto di dedicare uno spazio che riprendesse un’atmosfera metafisica posta in rapporto con un contesto architettonico storico come la cornice dei Chiostri benedettini di San Pietro in Reggio Emilia. Si è scelto di realizzare un centro di fotografia che coinvolgesse un festival importante come Fotografia Europea e lo stesso Ghirri. Un manufatto architettonico che rileggesse il suo linguaggio, utilizzando forme e colori del tutto riconoscibili e semplici, e che raccogliesse tutta l’opera del fotografo, come una sorta di monumento alla fotografia, sottolineando il suo rapporto con l’esistente, cercando il punto di equilibrio tra la sua interiorità e ciò che vive all’esterno, nel mondo, che continua ad esistere anche dopo uno scatto fotografico.
