Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Robust design in generalised linear models for improving the quality of polyurethane soles
In a process that manufactures polyurethane soles by casting, a number of problems lead to different types of defects on the sole, causing significant economic losses for the company. In order to improve the product quality and decrease the number of defects, this study conducts an experimental design in the context of robust design. Since the response variable is binary, the statistical analysis was performed using generalised linear models. The operational methodology reduced the percentage of defects, while combining the experimental technique and control systems to achieve superior quality and a consequent reduction in cost
Robust Design with Dynamic Features: Laboratory Level Case
A major trend in engineering arising from Taguchi methodology are the systems with dynamic characteristics, also called signal-response systems. This methodology is a basic tool which has a response that varies depending on level changes made in the factor called "signal", the classic example is the accelerator pedal car in which you get one acceleration response depending on the depth at which the pedal is pressed. The main objective of this methodology is to generate the dynamic response of the product that is robust to noise factors present in the system. In addition, it can improve the sensitivity of the product by using a control system. In this paper, an experiment using a prototype that simulates a control system is performed. The idea is that a student perform this work in a laboratory in order to understand and apply the concepts of robust design with dynamic characteristics
Análisis y mejora del sistema de evaluación del desempeño en el CIATEC y su impacto en la productividad
La planeación de las organizaciones lleva a establecer y buscar medidas y metas de desempeño y productividad a niveles generales, nosotros consideramos que una de las herramientas que nos pueden llevar a la consecución de las metas organizacionales es la evaluación del desempeño, pero la evaluación tiene que estar estrechamente ligada a dicha planeación estratégica para que las metas, proyectos y competencias evaluadas sean las mismas que requiere la institución para su evolución y desarrollo, mientras que el instrumento lleva a los individuos a la identificación con la misión, visión, objetivos, actividades y requerimientos de la empresa.
Debido a su naturaleza, la calificación arrojada por una evaluación del desempeño siempre tendrá elementos de controversia, ya que tiene involucradas variables de tipo cualitativo y cuantitativo, mientras que algunas características son medibles en base a hechos y productividad, algunas otras quedan al criterio y juicio del evaluador, presentándose algunos problemas que serán mencionados en la revisión documental de este documento, uno de los objetivos de esta investigación es el de manejar los criterios de tal forma que la evaluación sea lo más objetiva posible
Diseño robusto y sistemas de control
A nivel industrial existen muchos procesos en los cuales existen factores denominados “factores de ruido”, los cuales son difíciles o muy costosos de controlar. Adicionalmente se tienen los “factores de control”, los cuales pueden fijarse a ciertos niveles según lo requiera el proceso. La metodología del Diseño Robusto de Parámetros (DRP) de Taguchi se presenta como una herramienta estadística y de ingeniería para la mejora de ésta clase de procesos y/ o sistemas.
Es posible optimizar un sistema mediante la obtención de la mejor combinación de niveles en los factores de control a través de técnicas estadísticas y de optimización. El objetivo es la determinación de la respuesta de calidad que presenta menor variación alrededor de su media; a esta respuesta se le denomina “respuesta robusta”, ya que es aquella que presenta menor sensibilidad al efecto de los factores de ruido
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
