No full textAdult Massese rams are generally ill-tempered subjects, hardingly conditionable to new sex drives. The A.A. relate about protocols adopted in accostuming Massese sires to semen collection by artificial vagina for I.A. service. Their experiences involved seven male lambs, breed, on pourpose, in single pens, and submitted to accurate profilactic and sanitary analysis. Special care has been applied in describing igienic and breeding management, shelters and collecting-room equipments, and animal’s sex drive requirements. The most tedious managerial problem arised from continuous horn-figthing against boxes. One, in seven subjects, died abruptly for unknown causes, while six resulted accostumed to artificial collecting method . Of these, two, from the same flock have been culled for sanitary reasons (serologic positivity to CAEV virus), while a third reported blindness after heavy knock out during an occasional and unexpected horn-figthing with another ram (cranic trauma with CNS lesions)
Trans-vaginal echographic approach to early pregnancy diagnosis in small ruminants
No full textThe A.A. relate about preliminary results from a total of 79 echographic sessions for trans-vaginal pregnancy diagnoses performed on adult pluriparous sheep (48) and goats (3), in late autumn 2004. Each female was subjected to: a) a simple trans-vaginal examination, b) a trans-vaginal examination with lifted abdomen and c) a classic trans-abdominal trans-cutaneous pregnancy diagnosis. In many cases a confirmatory echographic follow-up was repeated a week later or more. For trans-vaginal examinations a 5 MHz, lubricated, convex probe was inserted in the vaginal cavity of the sheep, held in a standing position, and the results were always compared with those obtained by trans-cutaneous examination, in the sitting constrained animal (Tab.1). At first TVAL, on the 51 examined animals 28 resulted pregnant; 18 not-pregnant (two with pathologic uterine collections) and 5 dubious. In spite of our still limited experience, the method including abdominal lifting resulted rapid, early, safe, reliable and easy, therefore the main target of this preliminary note has been to highlight the possibility of checking early pregnancies in small ruminants by TVAL. Smaller echographic probes and more on field experiences are still required for better evaluation of the method and for its extension to younger nulliparous ewe-lambs

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
