84 Pianos: Pandemic Edition
No full text84 Pianos was originally conceived and composed to sound the architecture of Queensland Conservatorium for World Science Festival 2017 – the number of pianos in the title referring to the number of pianos housed in the building. During the Covid-19 lockdown in Australia, I initiated a remounted of this work in the digital real – collaborating with sound artist Leah Barclay and utilising the locusonus sound map to stream the sound. VJ Greg Harm was brought in to the project to present a visual accompaniment to the sound based on a series of photographs sent in by the participants, and historical footage examining ideas around communication. Tomlinson took on the role of project manager and artistic director, bringing all of the component parts together.
Performed on June 12th, 2020 by 80 pianists from across Australia and 5 international performers, this project was the single largest piano livestreaming in the world. Using the modular composition by Griswold as a starting point, the team – led by Tomlinson – utilised the technology of the Locusonus Sound map (originally designed for livestreaming ecological sounds for research purposes) to stream the simultaneous sounds of all pianists to a single point. Barclay then creatively mixed and broadcast the pianists, with anything from 5 to 50 simultaneous pianists playing. An alternate listening method for the audience was to spend time on the sound map and mix their own soundscape of the composition.
84 Pianos: Pandemic Edition has had impact in a number of ways. ABC New Waves podcast included it in “Keeping the Music Alive” (making music in isolation) episode. In addition the Australian Music Centre published a self-titled article about the project, and ABC Classic FM promoted the livestream regularly during the Drive program. It has also been included on programs about Australian music delivered by ABC Radio on ORF (Austrian Radio) and Radio Belgrade. The Power of Sound: Tuning into the Rising Volume in the Gulf of Maine.
No full textMarine species that function acoustically rely on sounds contained by the dynamic composition and material properties of the ocean’s reflective surface. Ocean soundscapes are being impacted by anthropogenic disturbances that penetrate the environment and disorient marine life. In Nova Scotia, local whale watching businesses depend on populations impacted by ship traffic in the Gulf of Maine. This thesis argues that conflict between the actors - ships, visitors, and whales - can be translated by using researchers to bridge understanding between the whale below and our perception above. The project proposes coupling a visitor center with an oceanic research center for seafloor materials, acoustics, and habitat off the province’s northwestern coastline in the Bay of Fundy to the Gulf of Maine. Sites were chosen within the Bay, an acoustic volume, where unique energetic channels allow the passage of water, creating opportunities for connection between volumes and thresholds of flow and sounds

No full textPubliée en 1605 par l’auteur franco-écossais Jean Barclay, la première partie de l’Euphormionis Lusinini Satyricon, roman satirique néo-latin, abonde en scènes nocturnes, durant lesquelles le personnage éponyme est confronté à une série de phénomènes au statut ambigu (feux follets, apparitions, songes). Événements surnaturels, ou naturels ? Le texte laisse place à l’interprétation, comme le montre la réception d’époque, notamment les traductions françaises, qui tendent à réduire son ambiguïté et son obscurité volontaires en privilégiant l’une ou l’autre explication. Barclay élabore en réalité une fine parodie satirique des anecdotes démonologiques ou des récits de songes prémonitoires, comme le montre son travail d’imitation des modèles classiques (Lucien, Apulée, Pétrone), l’usage des sources contemporaines (notamment Pierre Le Loyer), ou la composition soigneuse des scènes. L’auteur joue le jeu du faire-croire, mais pour mieux faire douter, car la pédagogie de l’incrédulité passe par l’expérience de l’illusion narrative proposée par la fiction.Published in 1605 by the Franco-Scottish author John Barclay, the first part of Euphormionis Lusinini Satyricon abounds in night scenes, where the eponymous character is confronted with a series of ambiguous phenomena (will-o’-the-wisps, ghosts, dreams) – supernatural, or natural events? The narrative remains open to interpretation, as its reception shows, especially the French translations, which tend to reduce the deliberate ambiguity and obscurity of the text by choosing one type of explanation. In fact, Barclay offers a subtle satirical travesty of demonological anecdotes and premonitory dream narratives, through the imitation of classics (Lucian, Apuleius, Petronius), the use of contemporary sources (notably Pierre Le Loyer), or the careful staging of events. The author plays a game of make-believe in order to make his readers doubt, as the lesson in incredulity relies on the very experience of narrative illusion
