Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Improving performance and reliability of M&NEMS accelerometers based on resonant detection
Les accéléromètres à poutre vibrante ont démontré leur capacité à atteindre un niveau de bruit inférieur au µg, auparavant réservé aux accéléromètres macroscopiques. Ces systèmes microélectromécaniques (MEMS) sont des candidats prometteurs pour les applications commerciales de haute précision en raison de leur faible coût, de leur petite taille et de leur possibilité de fabrication en série. Dans la grande majorité des capteurs inertiels commerciaux, la masse étalon et les éléments de détection sont gravés dans la même couche de silicium. Dans le cas particulier où l'élément de détection est une poutre résonnante, l'utilisation d'une seule couche de silicium implique un compromis entre la sensibilité et la bande passante de l'accéléromètre. La rupture de ce compromis pourrait permettre de concevoir des capteurs beaucoup plus sensibles et ouvrirait le champ à de nouvelles applications nécessitant des capteurs intégrés de haute performance. Grâce à un procédé multicouche, l'accéléromètre proposé bénéficie d'une masse d'épreuve micrométrique ainsi que des avantages des nano- résonateur résonnantes. De plus, les propriétés piézorésistives des nano- résonateur permettent de mesurer leur fonctionnement à haute fréquence.Ce travail montre les défis de l'utilisation d'un nano-résonateur piézorésistif comme capteur de force dans une application inertielle. D'abord, la modélisation, la conception et la fabrication de la première génération de capteur sont présentées. Comme le nano-résonateur conçu fonctionne au-delà du MHz, une électronique de lecture dédiée est conçue en partenariat avec l'Université Polytechnique de Milan. La deuxième partie de ce travail se concentre sur la caractérisation des accéléromètres dans le plans. L'utilisation du procédé multicouche permet d'atteindre la plus haute sensibilité de l'état de l'art pour une empreinte de masse de 0.18mm², i.e. 100,000 ppm/g avec <1% de non-linéarité sur la gamme ±1g. L'analyse du bruit montre que le bruit thermomécanique de l'accéléromètre est surmonté et que la limite de détection du nano-résonateur est atteinte, i.e. 1,75µg/√Hz de bruit de fond sur une bande passante de 1 kHz. La dernière partie traite de l'amélioration de l'architecture de l'accéléromètre et des nano-résonateurs afin de surmonter les limites de fonctionnement mises en évidence par les résultats expérimentaux. Le processus de fabrication étant compatible avec des capteurs gyroscopiques et des accéléromètres hors plan, la technologie proposée fournit une plateforme de fabrication pour les unités de mesure inertielle (IMU) à 6 axes ainsi qu'une bonne méthode de détéction pour le capteur de pression ou le magnétomètre.Resonant beam accelerometers have demonstrated their ability to achieve sub-µg floor noise previously reserved for macroscopic accelerometers. These microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are promising candidates for high-precision commercial applications due to their low cost, small size, and batch manufacturability. In the vast majority of commercial MEMS inertial sensors, the proof mass and sensing elements are etched into the same silicon layer. In the special case where the sensing element is a resonant beam, the use of a single layer of silicon imposes a trade-off between the sensitivity and the bandwidth of the accelerometer. Breaking the single layer trade-off could allow to address much more sensitive sensors and would open the field to new applications requiring high performance integrated sensors. Thanks to a multilayer process, the proposed accelerometer takes advantages of micrometric proof mass as well as benefits of nanoresonator. In addition, the piezoresistive properties of the nanoresonator enable a performant transduction method to measure its high frequency operation.This works considers the challenges of using piezoresistive nanoresonator as force sensor in inertial application. One, the modelling, design and fabrication of the first generation of sensor is presented. Because the designed nanoresonator operates up to the MHz, a dedicated readout electronics is designed in partnership with the Polytechnic University of Milan. The second part of this work focuses on the characterization of in-plane accelerometers. The use of the multi-layer process allows reaching the highest sensitivity of the state of the art for 0.18mm² mass footprint, i.e. 100,000 ppm/g with <1% nonlinearity over the ±1g range. The noise analysis shows that the thermomechanical noise of the accelerometer is overcome and that the detection limit of the nano-beam is reached, i.e. 1.75µg/√Hz of floor noise on 1-kHz bandwidth. The last part deals with the improvement of the accelerometer and nanoresonator architecture in order to overcome the operating limitations highlighted by the experimental results. Because the manufacturing process is compatible with the gyro sensor and out-of-plane accelerometer, the proposed technology provides a manufacturing platform for 6-axis inertial measurement units (IMU) as well as a good detection method for pressure sensor or magnetomete
