Rising educational attainment and opportunity equalization: Evidence from France.

    No full text
Educational policies are widely recognized as the means par excellence to equalize opportunities among children with different social and family backgrounds and to promote intergenerational mobility. In this paper we focus on the French case and we apply the opportunity equalization criterion proposed by Andreoli, Havnes and Lefranc (2019) for evaluating the effect of rising compulsory schooling requirements in secondary education. Our results show that such education expansion has a limited redistributive effects on students earnings distribution. Nonetheless, we provide evidence of opportunity equalization among groups of students dened by family background circumstances

The Rule of Law Under the Threat of the Pandemic. Echoes from the African Constitutional Justice (Comment to High Court of Lesotho, ABC & Ors. v Prime Minister & Ors.)

The ACB & Ors v Prime Minister & Ors case deals with a case of prorogation of Parliament of Lesotho made by the Prime Minister was evidently a clear attempt to avoid a vote of no-confidence. And such attempt was cautiously hidden behind a claim to be protecting human lives from the threat posed by the spread of Covid-19

Pricing Credit Default Swaps Under Multifactor Reduced-Form Models: A Differential Quadrature Approach

    No full text
We present a new numerical method for pricing credit default swaps under fully correlated multifactor reduced-form models. In particular, the proposed approach combines an implicit/explicit operator splitting procedure with the harmonic differential quadrature scheme, and is so efficient that it can be applied to models with up to six stochastic factors. This is a remarkable advantage, as we can use two factors to describe the interest rate, other two factors to describe the default probability, and other two factors to take into account, for example, the so-called counterparty risk. The performances of the novel method are demonstrated by extensive simulation, in which various kinds of models with four and six fully correlated factors are considered

An introduction to benign thyroid disease: Pathophysiologic, epidemiologic aspects and diagnostic methodology

The role of preoperative noninvasive diagnostic procedures in the management of benign thyroid diseases is critically reviewed and on the basis of a series of more than 13,000 thyroid nodules, sequentially examined, the role of preoperative fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology in discriminating benign from malignant lesions, is assessed. Retrospective studies were performed to determine the diagnostic accuracy of FNA adopted as routine preoperative screening procedure as compared to intraoperative frozen section (FS) analysis. US-guided FNA was shown to be more accurate allowing the preoperative identification of occult or minimal carcinoma: in fact about 3% of malignant thyroid nodules were detected. Moreover, the operation time is reduced, and unnecessary surgical treatments for benign lesions are eliminated, preventing the need of two-stage cancer surgery. FNA is a cost- effective diagnostic tool with about 20% reduction in the cost of care of patients with thyroid nodules. Most recent methods of molecular biology which seem promising in thyroid tissue sampled by FNA to detect malignant lesions missed by conventional cytology and included in the generic category of 'follicular proliferation', are analyzed
