Librettista improvvisata? Così si dice di Vincenzina Viganò Mombelli

    No full text
Vincenzina Viganò Mombelli (second half of the eighteenth century - 1814) is among the very few women who composed verses for music: she is indeed the author of the Demetrio e Polibio’s libretto that was set to music by Gioacchino Rossini and was performed for the first time in 1812. Despite the fact that in 1813 Giovanni Berchet expressed a positive opinion, contemporary critics consider Vincenzina an inexperienced author and note in her verses only weaknesses. The Demetrio e Polibio’s libretto is actually not a masterpiece but has many merits and shows that Vincenzina was very familiar with both the tradition and the novelties of the verses form music

Thyroid nodules in Graves disease and the risk of thyroid carcinoma

    No full text
Background: The risk of thyroid carcinoma in patients with Graves disease has been particularly emphasized when nodules coexist with thyroid hyperplasia; a surgical approach has been suggested. Objectives: To detect thyroid nodules early in patients with Graves disease and to evaluate the risk of carcinoma. Methods: The study group included 315 consecutive outpatients with Graves hyperthyroidism not previously treated with surgery or radioiodine therapy. Thyroid ultrasonography was performed at the time of enrollment and repeated annually in all patients; fine-needle aspiration (FNA) was carried out in those patients with nodules and repeated after 2 years or at shorter intervals. Results: One hundred six of 315 patients with Graves disease had thyroid nodules 8 mm in diameter or larger detected by ultrasonography. In 49 patients, nodules were present at the time of the first examination; in 57 patients, nodules developed during follow-up. Fine- needle aspiration cytology results revealed features of carcinoma in only 1 patient; this was confirmed by histologic examination of excised thyroid tissue. The nodules with normal cytologic features at the time of the first examination did not show any clinical and/or cytologic evolution toward malignancy during follow-up. Conclusions: Ultrasonographic evidence of nodules was frequently found among our patients with Graves disease, but malignant FNA cytologic findings of the examined nodules were rare at the time of diagnosis and throughout the course of the disease. When FNA cytologic evaluation does not indicate malignancy, the presence of thyroid nodules in patients with Graves disease does not indicate an aggressive therapeutic approach

Russische Oper in Italien am Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts. Rezeption, Theoriedebatte und neue Perspektiven

    No full text
This article examines the impact of the early dissemination of Russian Opera in the cultural life and the musical thought of Italy between the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. At the same time, it deals with the theory that Italy embraced Russian Opera in order to solve his own problems in building a national identity and it reflects the wider historiographical debates over the concept of cultural transfer. In this regards, the Author shows that contemporary critics and composers (like Giannotto Bastianelli and Alfredo Casella) understood Musorgsky’s »barbaric genius« as ideal reference point for a return to the supposedly popular origin of Italian melody

A fishing village in Cartagena (Spain) by Carlos de Miguel (1947-1955)

    No full text
[EN] The architect Carlos de Miguel González was the author of the fishing village in Cartagena (Spain). The project promoted by the Instituto Social de la Marina in 1947 consisted of the construction of a housing complex and a Fisherman's House completed in 1955. The work was part of the Plan Nacional de Mejoramiento de la Vivienda en los Poblados de Pescadores which intended to address one of the main concerns of the Spanish state after the Civil War: the problem of poor housing. Thus, numerous actions were carried out along the entire Spanish coast, some published in Revista Nacional de Arquitectura. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to publicize the Cartagena project and the vicissitudes of its construction, as the built work is quite different from the original project. It also aims to highlight its most outstanding features through a comparative analysis with the other projects published in the journal and by studying possible links with the vernacular architecture of the Region of Murcia.[ES] El arquitecto Carlos de Miguel González es el autor del poblado para pescadores en Cartagena (España). La Spina, V. Soaring Eagles of the High Qing: Women’s Writing as a Path to Social Advancement in Patriarchal China

    No full text
Although continuing the patriarchal, Confucian standards of previous empires, the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) established a fluid, cosmopolitan culture that allowed women greater access to education and the arts. During the High Qing era, women writers found empowerment and social advancement through the cultivation of their literary talents. In this thesis, the author provides historical context, explores the role of women in traditional Chinese society, and describes how women used poetry and letters to forge their own identity. The paper also includes detailed analyses of several poems from four Qing-era writers: Shang Jinglan, Wang Duanshu, Lui Rushi, and Wang Wei

© 2020, The Author(s). The popularity of the cluster analysis in the tourism field has massively grown in the last decades. However, accordingly to our review, researchers are often not aware of the characteristics and limitations of the clustering algorithms adopted. An important gap in the literature emerged from our review regards the adoption of an adequate clustering algorithm for mixed data. The main purpose of this article is to overcome this gap describing, both theoretically and empirically, a suitable clustering algorithm for mixed data. Furthermore, this article contributes to the literature presenting a method to include the “Don’t know” answers in the cluster analysis. Concluding, the main issues related to cluster analysis are highlighted offering some suggestions and recommendations for future analysis

Plans and drawings by Leopoldo Torres Balbás in archival holdings: analysis and interpretation

    No full text
The important legacy of the architect Leopoldo Torres Balbás (Madrid, 1888-1960) has been extensively studied in all the fields in which he excelled. However, according to his own words, expressed in an article signed under a pseudonym in 1920, he lacked skills as a draftsman. Whether this claim is true or not, understanding how Torres Balbás approached drawing, identifying his assistants and collaborators, and examining what distinguishes the plans created under his guidance and what he drew, are the key objectives of this article. These will help us explore his role as a draftsman through an analysis of the archival materials that have been preserved. They are distributed among various Spanish archives, which hold original documents by or belonging to Torres Balbás. However, their authorship is not always clearly indicated, as with some of the graphic materials accompanying his publications, which make up a bibliography of over 300 scientific works. Therefore, methodologically, after searching for documentary sources, selecting the principal graphic documents, and comparing them with the drawings illustrating his articles, it has been possible to determine their author¬ship and subsequently analyse and systematise the vast graphic material preserved by the architect. Finally, the research carried out has been possible, first, to gain a deeper understanding of Torres Balbás’s figure and his real skills in graphic matters; second, to identify the key figures that helped and collaborated with him: draftsmen, architects, students, etc.; and third, to uncover his actual relationship with drawing.DOI: https://doi.org/10.20365/disegnarecon.34.2025.20</p
