Dynamics in cardiometabolic risk among Turkish adults: Similarities to that in Iranians?
Based on 20 years experiences of follow-up of the Turkish Adult Risk Factor (TARF) study, this review summarizes the distribution of risk factors among Turks which is dominated by components of the metabolic syndrome (MetS), especially abdominal obesity and atherogenic dyslipidemia. The adoption of a 95 cm cutoff for male abdominal circumference was crucial in the understanding of cardiometabolic risk factors. The prevalence of MetS, type-2 diabetes and coronary heart disease (CHD) are high, alike in Iranians. The TARF study demonstrated that low-grade systemic inflammation and oxidative stress are major determinants of cardiometabolic risk in the population at large, and involves the female sex to a greater extent than the male. As a result, impaired anti-inflammatory and atheroprotective function developed in middle-aged and elderly obese individuals emerging as dysfunction of apolipoprotein A-I and HDL particles. This dysfunction is currently a major driver cardiometabolic risk in Turkish adults leading to substantial excess diabetes and CHD. Separate algorithms for diabetes and CHD were derived that improved the risk prediction of these diseases.
The author strongly suspects that such dynamics in the development of diabetes and CHD exist in Western adults prone to impaired glucose tolerance, and evidence is accumulating regarding general Iranian adults. These issues posing a vast threat on public cardiometabolic health will have to be recognized with the purpose of not delaying implementation of measures for the modification of cardiometabolic risk, especially in women
CFD analysis for predicting cooling time of a domestic refrigerator with thermoelectric cooling system
In this work, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis was conducted considering three different turbulence (viscous) models for a fresh food compartment of a domestic refrigerator (DR), in order to not only gain idea on cooling down time rate of fresh food compartment but also present air and temperature distribution inside the compartment when it is loaded. The refrigerator composes of three compartments: Fresh food (FFC), chill (CC) and freezer (FC). The FFC compartment is cooled by a thermoelectric/Peltier cooler (TEC) while the other compartments are handled by a vapour compression (VC) system. To measure cooling times, tests were conducted according to new IEC62552:2015 standard in climatic chambers and the cooling time was measured as 146.5 min. The predictions of developed CFD model clearly visualize the airflow and temperature fields inside the FFC. Concerning numerical predictions for the packages in the upper regions were in better agreement (below 10%) with measurements than the predictions for the packages in the lower regions mainly due to convective heat transfer behaviour. Effect of Awareness of Other Side’s Gain on Negotiation Outcome, Emotion, Argument, and Bidding Behavior
Designing agents aiming to negotiate with human counterparts requires additional factors. In this work, we analyze the main elements of human negotiations in a structured human experiment. Particularly, we focus on studying the effect of negotiators being aware of the other side’s gain on the bidding behavior and the negotiation outcome. We compare the negotiations in two settings where one allows human negotiators to see their opponent’s utility and the other does not. Furthermore, we study what kind of emotional state expressed and arguments sent in those setups. We rigorously discuss the findings from our experiments.Interactive Intelligenc
Electroencephalographic and behavioral effects of intracerebroventricular or intraperitoneal injections of toxic honey extract in adult Wistar rats and GAERS
Toxic honey, containing grayanotoxin, is obtained from nectar and polen of rhododendron. Consumed in excess it produces seizures and convulsions. In order to investigate whether the toxic honey extract can be used as a seizure model, we examined the electroencephalographic (EEG) and motor effects of intracerebroventricular (icv) or intraperitoneal (ip) injection of toxic honey extract in Wistar rats or in genetic absence epilepsy rats from Strasbourg (GAERS). Male Wistar rats or GAERS were stereotaxically implanted with bilateral cortical recording electrodes in all ip groups and cannula in the icv groups. Based on the previous study, an extract was obtained from the non-toxic and toxic honey. After the injection of the non-toxic or toxic honey extract, seizure stages and changes in EEG were evaluated from 9 am to noon. The icv administration of toxic honey extract produced stage 4 seizures and bilateral cortical spikes within 30-60 min and these effects disappeared after 120 min in Wistar rats or GAERS. The mean of bilateral cortical spike acitivity in EEG of Wistar rats was 804.2 +/- A 261.0 s in the 3-h period. After the icv administration of toxic honey extract to GAERS, the mean duration of spike-and-wave discharges (SWDs) in GAERS significantly decreased during the first 60 min and then returned to baseline level. Ip injection of toxic honey extract caused no seizure and no change in EEG in either GAERS or Wistars. These results suggest that the icv administration of toxic honey extract can be used as a seizure model
Optimization of Uniform Amplitude Periodic Linear Phased Arrays for Grating Lobe Reduction
The optimization of mode excitation coefficients in linear periodic arrays of multi-mode antenna elements is studied for grating lobe reduction. A novel beamforming architecture is proposed with a new optimization problem based on equi-amplitude element excitations for optimal power efficiency. The capabilities of the proposed synthesis approach on suppressing the grating lobe for wide scan angles, and on maintaining the peak gain at the steering angle are analyzed. A 16-element 0.7-wavelength spaced array of dual-mode circular patch antenna elements is used for demonstration purposes. It is shown that a good performance trade-off is achieved when the excitation amplitude of the high order mode is restricted to a sufficiently large value. The ratio of the peak gain outside the main lobe to the gain at the angle of steering is reduced up to about −15 dB and −14 dB for scanning towards 30 and 45 degrees off-broadside, respectively.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Microwave Sensing, Signals & System

Efficient Embedded Element Pattern Prediction via Machine Learning: A Case Study with Planar Non-Uniform Sub-Arrays
Efficient prediction of embedded element patterns (EEPs) is including the mutual coupling (MC) effects in the optimization of irregular planar arrays is studied for the first time in the literature. An ANN-based methodology is used to predict the pattern of each element in the whole visible space for a flexible planar array topology in milliseconds. The technique is proposed is validated on a 4-element planar non-uniform sub-array structure. Excellent accuracy on the EEP prediction while providing great efficiency in computational time and load in comparison to the full-wave simulations is demonstrated.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Microwave Sensing, Signals & System
This paper deals with the studies on the Alevi tradition of Professor Hasan Onat, who passed away on 26.09.2020, and his contribution to the field. Onat is an important academician and intellectual educated in Turkey.
As a historian of Islamic Sects, he has done many academic studies on different subjects, both classical and recent, as well as contemporary, such as Shi’ism, 20th Century Shi’ism, Iranian Shi‘ism, sectarian discrimination and conflicts, supra-sectarian approach, religious understanding and change in Turkey. In addition to this, he made important contributions to the field of History of Islamic Sects by having his students do their master’s and doctoral dissertations on different subjects; for example on the sects -especially in their classical periods- such as Kharijis, Murji’ah, Zaydism, Mu’tazila, Karramiya, İsmailism, Ash’arism , Maturidism, İmamiyya, Druze and Qarmatians, on the concepts such as Mahdi, Batinıyya/ezotericism, İmamate, Rafıda and Ahl al-Bayt, on some important people such as Abu’l-Kasım al-Ka‘bi, and Djaʿfar al-Sadık and on many other topics. Onat has also written articles on many current topics such as globalization, secularization, identity, politics, religious education, family, freedoms, violence, sectarian conflicts, etc.
Onat in his studies methodically emphasizes the following: Wherever there is people, there is religion; it is man who understands, lives and institutionalizes religion (texts); there is interpretation at the basis of religious formations such as sects, Sufi orders or religious communities; therefore, each of the religious understandings and institutional structures isn’t divine, but is human based; as such, none of them should be identified with religion/Islam and their members should not claim that they are themselves the only correct way of understanding religion/Islam; because these interpretations or institutionalizations are based on “time” and “place” and the connection of ideas with events that occur in different fields such as political, economic, etc.; no formation doesn’t stay as it emerged, it evolves by changing and transforming, and therefore a process is in question; so, it is necessary to try to understand a religious understanding or group by taking into account their own works/books and concepts formed according to the mentioned elements; the different religious understandings emerging with the effect of these elements listed above are an inevitable phenomenon. Therefore, it is striking that Onat put forward a sensitivity that prioritizes living together by seeing all these differences as (intellectual) wealth around the founding principles of religion.
Due to the developments in the world and our country, Onat was not indifferent to the debates about the Alevi tradition; he both carried out academic studies and engaged his students in this topic. Onat has done studies on the following issues: important persons such as Ahmet Yesevi, Haci Bektash Veli; different structures such as Bektashi and Qizilbash tradition, works such as Velayetname and Buyruks, practical reflections in the field as in the case of Çorum, phenomena, concepts and symbols such as Karbala, identity discussions and identity-theology relations in the context of Alevi tradition, some debates on the Alevi tradition in the context of Religious Culture and Moral Knowledge Courses and the Presidency of Religious Affairs. He also has his students do doctorate study on Qizilbash differentiation and Buyruks.
Onat also made important contributions to the field in terms of the Alevi tradition by addressing these issues with a methodical approach that he focused on sensitively in the field of History of Islamic Sects. In this article, Onat’s contribution to the field about the Alevi tradition is discussed with an emphasis on his own sensitivities.
