Iron deficiency is an important contributor to anemia among reproductive age women in Lebanon
The objective of this study was to gain knowledge about anemia is it relates to program planning. No recent data exist on anemia [hemoglobin (Hb) 120g-L, plasma ferritin (PF) normal], Fe deficiency (ID) [PF 15 microg-L, Hb normal], or Fe deficiency anemia [Hb 120 g-L, PF 15 microg-L] in Lebanese women. A national survey of 540 nonpregnant women aged 15-49 years was conducted to find the prevalence and determinants of anemia and ID in Lebanon. Sociodemographic, health, and dietary data were collected. Hb and ferritin were assessed. Thirty-three percent of the subjects had ID and 13.5 per cent had Fe deficiency anemia. Eight percent were anemic (Hb 120 g-L) with PF values 15 microg-L. Women consuming 67 per cent of the RDA of hematinic nutrients had lower Hb and Fe levels. Strategies to improve Fe and anemia status are discussed. © 2004 Taylor and Francis.AMR A, 1986, DIRASAT, V13, P75; Angastiniotis M, 1998, ANN NY ACAD SCI, V850, P251, DOI 10.1111-j.1749-6632.1998.tb10482.x; Barr F, 1998, PUBLIC HEALTH NUTR, V1, P249, DOI 10.1079-PHN19980041; Byg KE, 2000, HEMATOL, V5, P319; *CENTR INT AG DEP, 2002, WORLD FACT BOOK; *DRI, 2002, DIET REF INT VIT A V; *ICNND, 1962, NUTR SURV REP LEB FE; JACKSON RT, 1992, NUTRITION, V8, P430; LOZOFF B, 1991, NEW ENGL J MED, V325, P687, DOI 10.1056-NEJM199109053251004; MILMAN N, 1992, ANN HEMATOL, V64, P22, DOI 10.1007-BF01811467; Milman N, 1998, ANN HEMATOL, V77, P13, DOI 10.1007-s002770050405; *N SQUAR COMP, 1993, NUTR 4 SILV OR N SQU; ROATH S, 1992, CURRENT VIEWS THALAS; *SAS I INC, 1998, VERS 7; Scholl TO, 1994, AM J CLIN NUTR S, V59, p500S; SCHOLL TO, 1994, AM J CLIN NUTR, V59, p492S; SLOAN NL, 1992, 7B MOTH CAR PROJ; Tadmouri GO, 1998, SAUDI MED J, V19, P237; TURNER AG, 1994, SAMPLE DESIGN SELECT; *UNICEF REG OFF MI, 1993, SIT AN IR DEF AN CHI; van den Broek NR, 1998, BRIT J HAEMATOL, V103, P817; Viteri FE, 1998, BIOMED ENVIRON SCI, V11, P46; *WHO, 1996, WHONUT177EG11961000; World Health Organization, 1992, WHOMCHMSM922; World Health Organization, 2001, WHONHD013; Zahed Laila, 2001, Journal of Biomedicine and Biotechnology, V1, P129, DOI 10.1155-S111072430100029846

Delay in seeking health care for acute coronary syndromes in a Lebanese sample
Early treatment of patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) is crucial to reduce morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this study was to examine delay in seeking care for ACS symptoms in a Lebanese sample and identify predictors of delay. Medical record reviews and interviews using the Response to Symptoms Questionnaire were conducted with 204 ACS patients in coronary care within 72 hours of admission. Median time from symptom onset to hospital arrival was 4.5 hours. Higher education, presence of dyspnea, intermittent symptoms, and waiting for symptoms to go away predicted longer delays, whereas intensity of symptoms and active response (going to the hospital) predicted shorter delays. The findings suggest lack of knowledge of ACS symptoms and the need for public education in this regard. © 2006 Sage Publications.Al-Hassan Musa A, 2005, Int J Nurs Pract, V11, P13, DOI 10.1111-j.1440-172X.2005.00497.x; ALONZO AA, 1986, SOC SCI MED, V22, P1297, DOI 10.1016-0277-9536(86)90093-6; Ashton K C, 1999, Prog Cardiovasc Nurs, V14, P53; Berton G, 2001, Ital Heart J, V2, P766; Braunwald E, 2000, J AM COLL CARDIOL, V36, P970, DOI 10.1016-S0735-1097(00)00889-5; Braunwald E, 2002, J AM COLL CARDIOL, V40, P1366, DOI 10.1016-S0735-1097(02)02336-7; Brown AL, 2000, CIRCULATION, V102, P173; BURNETT RE, 1995, AM J CARDIOL, V75, P1019, DOI 10.1016-S0002-9149(99)80716-4; Canto JG, 2000, JAMA-J AM MED ASSOC, V283, P3223, DOI 10.1001-jama.283.24.3223; Diefenbach MA, 1996, J SOC DISTRESS HOMEL, V5, P11, DOI 10.1007-BF02090456; Dracup K, 1997, HEART LUNG, V26, P253, DOI 10.1016-S0147-9563(97)90082-0; DRACUP K, 1995, SOC SCI MED, V40, P379, DOI 10.1016-0277-9536(94)00278-2; Dracup K, 2003, J NURS SCHOLARSHIP, V35, P317, DOI 10.1111-j.1547-5069.2003.00317.x; Finnegan JR, 2000, PREV MED, V31, P205, DOI 10.1006-pmed.2000.0702; FRANZOSI MG, 1995, ARCH INTERN MED, V155, P1481; Gurwitz JH, 1997, ANN INTERN MED, V126, P593; Ho PM, 2002, ANN EMERG MED, V40, P381, DOI 10.1067-mem.2002.125717; Johansson I, 2004, HEART LUNG, V33, P291, DOI 10.1016-j.hrtlng.2004.04.002; Kentsch M, 2002, Z KARDIOL, V91, P147; KENYON LW, 1991, CIRCULATION, V84, P1969; KULWICKI AD, 2003, TRANSCULTURAL HLTH C, P90; Lee H, 2000, APPL NURS RES, V13, P125, DOI 10.1053-apnr.2000.7652; LEITCH JW, 1989, MED J AUSTRALIA, V150, P6; Leslie WS, 2000, HEART, V84, P137, DOI 10.1136-heart.84.2.137; McKinley S, 2000, HEART LUNG, V29, P237, DOI 10.1067-mhl.2000.106940; HAND MM, 1994, ANN EMERG MED, V23, P311; Nawfal H, 2004, RESIDENT ISSUES LEBA; Reilly A, 1994, Am J Crit Care, V3, P300; Sawaya JI, 2000, LEBAN MED J, V48, P63; Sawaya J I, 1999, J Med Liban, V47, P2; SCHROEDER JS, 1978, AM J MED, V64, P742, DOI 10.1016-0002-9343(78)90512-0; SIMOONS ML, 1986, J AM COLL CARDIOL, V7, P717; Smith SC, 2001, CIRCULATION, V103, P3019; Wu Y, 2004, CHINESE MED J-PEKING, V117, P1772; Zerwic JJ, 2003, NURS RES, V52, P159, DOI 10.1097-00006199-200305000-0000517151
Analysis of Czech and international non-governmental non-profit organizations
The goal of this thesis was to compare Czech and Spanish non-governmental non-profit organizations and analyze common and diverse characteristics using international comparison in several areas. As a representative of the Czech non-profit sector was chosen ADRA, o.s. Spanish nonprofit sector was represented by the organization Manos Unidas. Findings revealed differences in investigated areas. However, founded differences were not so significant to identify one of the non-governmental non-profit organizations as a significantly better one. Nevertheless the author recommended transferring some of the best practices of Manos Unidas to ADRA, o.s
Road Construction Management Project for the Reconstruction of the Adra, Künni and Vao Streets in the City of Tartu
Lõputöö „Tartu linna Adra, Künni, Vao tänavate rekonstrueerimise Tee-ehituskorralduse projekt“ eesmärgiks oli näidata ja välja tuua Tartu Linna kolme kobartänava rekonstrueerimistööde korraldus, millega mugavdatakse inimeste ligipääsu kodudesse. Mugavdamise all peetakse silmas seda, et muudetakse teed tolmuvabaks, rekonstrueeritakse tänavavalgustus, paigaldatakse toimiv sadeveekanalisatsioon, kõnnitee ehitusega tagatakse laste ohutum koolitee ning jalakäijate turvaline liiklemine. Viiendas osas on välja arvutatud täpne ressursi vajadus. Sellega seoses sai koostatud kalendergraafik (Lisa 1) ja mehhanismide vajaduse tabel (Lisa 2). Kalendergraafikus on välja toodud tööde täpne järjekord. Arvutuste kohaselt on võimalik antud objekt valmis ehitada 35 tööpäevaga. Selle aja hulka pole arvestatud võimalikke materjali tarneprobleeme ega muutuvaid ilmastikuolusid. Lõputöö annab tervikliku ülevaate objektist, mis kindlasti hõlbustab kohapealset tööd.Target of the graduation thesis Road Construction Management Project for the Reconstruction of the Adra, Künni and Vao Streets in the City of Tartu is to show and highlight cluster street reconstruction for three streets in City of Tartu, after what streets will be convenient and safer for people. By convenient author means that roads will be turned dust free, reconstruction of street lighting, thanks to construction of pavement children way to school will be safer. Current situation of the streets is described in the first part of the graduation thesis. During the summer, roads are dusty and in the spring time there are big issues with load capacity Part two highlights road construction features of City of Tartu and technical specifications of various works. Third part of the graduation thesis describes minimum requirements of materials used. In the fourth part volumes of construction of the streets are shown with cost list, it is necessary for mechanisms, workforce and material quantity calculations. Complete resource calculations are made and described in part five. Calendar schedule (Lisa 1) and mechanisms need table (Lisa 2) is composed to support calculations. Exact work order is outlined in calendar schedule. Calculations show that this object can be completed in 35 working days. Extremely changing weather conditions and material transport problems are not included in calculation. Thesis presents complete overview of the object, which helps to facilitate on-site work for object manager
Association between dietary patterns and the risk of metabolic syndrome among Lebanese adults
Purpose: The main objective of this study was to evaluate the association between dietary patterns and the metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its metabolic abnormalities among Lebanese adults, using data from a national nutrition survey. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis involving adults aged ≥18 years (n = 323) with no prior history of chronic diseases was conducted. Participants completed a brief sociodemographic and 61-item food frequency questionnaire. Anthropometric measurements and fasting blood samples were also obtained. The International Diabetes Federation criteria were used to classify study participants with the metabolic syndrome. Dietary patterns were identified by factor analysis. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the associations of extracted patterns with MetS and its metabolic abnormalities. Results: Out of 323 participants, 112 (34.6percent) were classified as having MetS. Three dietary patterns were identified: Fast Food-Dessert, Traditional Lebanese, and High Protein. Compared with participants in the lowest quintile of the Fast Food-Dessert pattern, those in the highest quintile had significantly higher odds for MetS (OR, 3.13; 95percent CI: 1.36-7.22) and hyperglycemia (OR, 3.81; 95percent CI: 159-9.14). Subjects with the highest intake of the High Protein pattern had an increased risk for hypertension (OR, 2.98; 95percent CI: 1.26-7.02). The Traditional Lebanese pattern showed no association with MetS or its components. Conclusions: The findings of this study demonstrate a positive association of the Fast Food-Dessert pattern with MetS and hyperglycemia among Lebanese adults. These results may guide the development of improved preventive nutrition interventions in this adult population. © 2011 The Author(s).Abeywardena MY, 2011, ENDOCR METAB IMMUNE; Sibai Abla-Mehio, 2008, CVD Prevention and Control, V3, DOI 10.1016-j.precon.2007.06.002; Alberti KGMM, 2009, CIRCULATION, V120, P1640, DOI 10.1161-CIRCULATIONAHA.109.192644; Chedid R, 2009, METABOLISM, V58, P746, DOI 10.1016-j.metabol.2008.11.014; Denova-Gutierrez E, 2010, J NUTR, V140, P1855, DOI 10.3945-jn.110.122671; DiBello JR, 2009, J NUTR, V139, P1933, DOI 10.3945-jn.109.107888; Dietary guidelines for Americans, 2005, DIETARY GUIDELINES A; Elliott SS, 2002, AM J CLIN NUTR, V76, P911; Fung TT, 2004, ARCH INTERN MED, V164, P2235, DOI 10.1001-archinte.164.20.2235; Fung TT, 2001, AM J CLIN NUTR, V73, P61; Hu FB, 2002, CURR OPIN LIPIDOL, V13, P3, DOI 10.1097-00041433-200202000-00002; Hu FB, 1999, AM J CLIN NUTR, V69, P243; IPAQ, 2005, IPAQ INT PHYS ACT QU; Jacques PF, 2001, AM J CLIN NUTR, V73, P1; Jebb SA, 2010, AM J CLIN NUTR, V92, P748, DOI 10.3945-ajcn.2009.29096; Kastorini CM, 2011, J AM COLL CARDIOL, V57, P1299, DOI 10.1016-j.jacc.2010.09.073; Leite MLC, 2009, PUBLIC HEALTH NUTR, V12, P1494, DOI 10.1017-S1368980008004539; Ludwig DDS, 2002, JAMA-J AM MED ASSOC, V287, P2414, DOI 10.1001-jama.287.18.2414; Lutsey PL, 2008, CIRCULATION, V117, P754, DOI 10.1161-CIRCULATIONAHA.107.716159; Metintas S, 2009, T ROY SOC TROP MED H, V103, P812, DOI 10.1016-j.trstmh.2009.02.019; Montegaard C, 2010, J NUTR, V140, P38, DOI 10.3945-jn.109.111427; Mullie P, 2010, EUR J CLIN NUTR, V64, P231, DOI 10.1038-ejcn.2009.145; Nkondjock A, 2010, EUR J CLIN NUTR, V64, P1014, DOI 10.1038-ejcn.2010.109; Nutritionist IV, 1993, N SQUAR COMP; Panagiotakos DB, 2007, J AM DIET ASSOC, V107, P979, DOI 10.1016-j.jada.2007.03.006; Paradis Ann-Marie, 2006, Int J Behav Nutr Phys Act, V3, P38, DOI 10.1186-1479-5868-3-38; Park SY, 2005, J NUTR, V135, P843; REAVEN GM, 1988, DIABETES, V37, P1595, DOI 10.2337-diabetes.37.12.1595; Rezazadeh A, 2010, NUTRITION, V26, P337, DOI 10.1016-j.nut.2009.06.019; Schulze MB, 2006, OBESITY, V14, P1444, DOI 10.1038-oby.2006.164; Schulze MB, 2001, BRIT J NUTR, V85, P363, DOI 10.1079-BJN2000254; Song Y, 2012, NUTR METAB CARDIOVAS, V22, P456, DOI 10.1016-j.numecd.2010.09.002; SPSS, 2003, STAT PACK WIND 14 1; Wang L, 2008, J HYPERTENS, V26, P215, DOI 10.1097-HJH.0b013e3282f283dc; Willet WC, 1998, NUTR EPIDEMIOLOGY; Willett WC, 1997, AM J CLIN NUTR, V65, P122024
