Schools With Future Value
Schools with Future Value investigates the school buildings as public buildings and expands the definition of their value with architectural and social aspects beyond their education function. Schools are increasingly becoming social catalysts in the Dutch context, providing a meeting ground for students, parents, and neighbourhood inhabitants. Despite their significance on society, the school buildings are among the most cost and space-efficient buildings, resulting in poor quality and minimum possible spaces optimized only for the purpose. The uncertainty of the future use of these buildings adds to the further diminishing of the ambition in design and development processes. The project aims to conduct a typological analysis of the school buildings' social, spatial conditions and pedagogical aspects; and finally, propose new school typologies and generic spatial strategies that resist the limitations of current design trends and financial models while offering design possibilities for future adaptation.Building Knowledg
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Between port and city: A water complex in Genoa
Genoa is positioned on a very narrow piece of land, squeezed in between the mountains and the sea. This provides a topography in which the port and the city are forced to live very close to each other. Whereas in other port cities the port recedes itself from the city center, this is not possible in Genoa due the the mountainous hinterland. Thus the large-scale port is directly adjacent to the medieval city.On the dividing line between port and city is an elevated road located, the Sopraelevata, a transborder that has somehow also become a boundary, but an unclear boundary that is sometimes easy, but sometimes impossible to cross. The area of the Sopraelevata, the interweaving of the two worlds is what creates the interscalarity: The intermediary between two scales. What are the consequences of a wrangle between port and city, between large port objects and small residential buildings, for Genoa? What happens on this division line and how can architecture be implemented?Reprogramming this line in order to enhance new public functions might be a solution to make the bridge between the different scales. The public building as an interscalar program in-between industrial and residential buildings.Architecture, Urbanism and Building Science

Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
The Valley: The Ground of Earthly Delights
My graduation project is located in the valley of Luxembourg City. During the designing of this project, Constant Nieuwenhuys’s New Babylon played a crucial role for its similarities with the valley in the city.Firstly, they both stretch all over the city, resulting in a sort of skeleton of the city for its holism. New Babylon is suspended above the already-existent ground while the valley, in a perspective, is carved into the plateaus.Secondly, the human activities inside are quite alike. New Babylon is known for its ludic characteristics which are distinct from normal utilitarian modernism buildings while the valley in Luxembourg, which is characterized by its leisure activities, is distinct from the plateaus which is characterized by its bureaucratic building, as a sign of utilitarianism.Thirdly, the last but the most important, New Babylon and the valley, which has been and is to be transformed artificially, share structural similarities, both in terms of planning and sectioning. Also, I take the sector which is a basic unit in New Babylon as a prototype to illustrate Planning and Sectioning as a way of re-depicting the valley
The Fifth Plateau: Defining the threshold for a Third Industrial Revolution in Luxembourg Ville
Luxembourg can be read as a system of plateaus interconnected by large pieces of infrastructure that physically connect them. The edges of the plateaus fullflil a communicating function together with the urban ensembles that occupy the platform. The development of these separate islands has always gone hand in hand with a specific economic ambition and has been instigated by firstly building a bridge (piece of infrastructure) to the new deserted plateau. In this respect we could classify the various plateaus as follows: Ville Haute plateau war economy and fortifications; Garer plateau, second industrial revolution and steel industry; Cents plateau, suburban lifestyle; Kirchberg plateau, service economy and the European Parliament. Within this system of intertwining plateaus there is one plateau that seems underdeveloped in relation to its potential within the current ambitions of Luxembourg to focus on the third industrial revolution. This plateau I call the fifth plateau. The “Fifth Plateau” project imagines a new way to catalyse the urbanization of that empty plateau in Luxembourg Ville. It does so by proposing an architecture of an infrastructural scale on the edge of the plateau. By doing so the project, firstly participates in the system of communication of between the various plateaus, secondly provides a programmatic fuel injection to instigate future development. The project is proposed as a 500m long structure that sits on that edge facing the rest of the city. The structure allows for various sections to be hanged from it in accordance to the specific topographic condition. The horizontal surface on top of the Vierendeel trusses functions as a public promenade along the edge and is the address to the various programs below. The program is based on various aspects related to a third industrial revolution and is located in accordance to the opportunities the topography gives. Therefore the data centre is located where the structure enters the ground, where the project bridges a small valley the structure houses the restaurant, convention centre and hotel. The concave slope houses the robotics labs, where the concave slope facilitates the IT laboratories. Finally the soft, almost horizontal slope, closest to the Garer plateau will facilitate maker spaces for public use. The facade is a literal curtain wall that follows the movement of the topography and reflects the various longitudinal sections that facilitate the variety of programmatic elements. The project is a contemporary approach towards the edge condition in Luxembourg by performing as a light weight, flexible structure that moves with and accentuates the topographical condition of the fifth plateau. It proposes an architecture that addresses the newest economic ambition of Luxembourg, namely The Third Industrial Revolution. It sets out to function as the threshold for the further development of the Fifth plateau so that it can play its role as a new chapter within the history of the development of the plateaus in Luxembourg Ville.<br/
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Error and cheats in pre-accounting
Frauds in enterprises are increasing day by day in terms of both frequency and amount. International big company scandals over the past two decades have highlighted the importance of fraud audits and the responsibility of auditors. In addition, accounting frauds that have been or have not yet been made are not only the owners and investors; employees, credit institutions, government, audit firms, other rights and stakeholders, as well as very different sectors related to the business. Consequently, fraud affects the economies negatively. In this context, in the first part of the thesis, the concept of acco-unting and the concept of pre-accounting and the processes and transactions used in pre-accounting are given. In the second part, the concept of fraud and error, which has be-come a growing problem of enterprises, is explained in detail. In this direction, the chapter is terminated by explaining the titles such as error and accounting error, fraud and accounting fraud, types of fraud, error and fraud examples made in accounting re-cords. In the third and last part, under the title of Importance of Internal Audit in Unco-vering Errors and Cheats in Pre-Accounting; Prevention of errors and frauds, audit, in- ternal audit, types of internal audit, dimensions of internal audit, internal audit approac-hes, internal control issues for revealing errors and fraud are explained. Pre-accounting is a system that follows the basic accounting procedures of enterp-rises. The accounting system of enterprises gives most of the data that can be used in decision making to the related parties. Therefore, accounting information is very impor-tant in the decision-making process because it is the standard information required by the business management. In this study, it is tried to emphasize the errors and tricks in the pre-accounting and the problems it poses to the enterprises
