Generating Ontologies through Organizational Modeling
Ontologies are recognized as important component of
information systems supporting business processes within and
across organizations. At modeling time, they contribute
identifying key elements from business processes; at development
time, their structure can be translated automatically into
information system’s source code; finally, at run time, through
queries and reasoning, they provide proper data for decision
making. Additionally, ontologies provide the basis for sharing
and publishing organizational information through the Semantic
Web. However, representing organizational information directly
into an ontology requires specialized expertise in the ontology
engineering domain, thus, ontologies are not generated using a
domain language easily for the organizational domain experts. In
this work, we propose the use of specialized organizational
modeling techniques as starting point to model the organization,
thereby, ensuring the proper definition of the organizational
knowledge. Then, a mechanism is provided to automatically
transform the organizational knowledge in its corresponding
ontological representation. Our proposed approach is based on
Model Driven Engineering ideas and it involves: a) the
development of an ontology representing the metamodel of two
widely used organizational modeling techniques i* and Tropos
and b) the systematic transformation of i* based modeling
primitives into instances of the ontology
An Ontology-Based Methodology for Integrating i* Variants
Many variants of the i* Framework have been developed
since its definition. For instance, i* -based modeling languages have been
proposed for agent-oriented and service-oriented software development,
for modeling risk, security requirements, and so on. The integration of
models expressed in i* variants poses interoperability problems. This issue
has been faced at different levels, e.g. through unified metamodels,
or with an interchange format to depict i* models. In our research work,
we propose a practical approach to tackle the interoperability problems,
exploiting ontology-based techniques. In a previous work, we presented
an ontological representation of the i* metamodel and a tool to automatically
transform an i* model to an instance of this ontology. In
this position paper, we describe a methodology to integrate i* variants
through the ontological representation of the i* metamodel, and a mechanism
to support the understanding of models expressed in those variants.
As example of application, we present the integration of i*, Tropos
and Service-oriented i* by using ontologies and a tool to automatically
transform models expressed with those variants in terms of that ontolog
Enriching Organizational Models through Semantic Annotation
Semantic annotation of visual models is useful to provide a precise, formal meaning to model elements, thus making
them more understandable to people, enabling a deeper analysis of requirements and automated reasoning. We present
an approach for the enrichment of visual models of an organization, with annotations characterized by a semantics de-
fined by an organized, structured source of knowledge. In order to carry out the semantic annotation a set of suggestions
referring to the use of general and specific ontologies is presented. Moreover, we present a case study to validate the
effectiveness of our approach
Extension and integration of i* models with ontologies
Currently, i* is one of the most well founded organizational
modelling techniques. Its main feature is the expressibility to represent
intentional social relations among stakeholders. In i* models, each modeling
component is described explicitly through text labels. However, the
process of labeling model elements is usually an activity which is not rigorous
and not well documented for designers. Performing the labeling
with freedom and subjectivity often results in unclear labels that are not
helpful for interoperability and the understanding of the model semantics.
In this paper, we deal with this problems by extending i* models
with ontologies. Taking advantage of an ontological definition of concepts
and well-defined relationships, we improve the unambiguous interpretation
of labels and thus interoperability, reuse and machine-readability
of a model. A guided process and tool support for the integration of i*
models with an ontology are described in this paper
Towards supporting business services discovery through the integration of organizational models with ontologies
We argue that the integration of organizational models with
ontologies is useful to discover business services because we consider that
a domain concept that integrated different elements of the model could
represent new business services to the organization. These additional
services could improve the performance of an enterprise and detect new
opportunity areas. Moreover, a model annotated with domain concepts
improves the analysis process because included additional information
can facilitate a semi-automated reasoning among elements. This paper
presents an approach to integrate visual models of an organization with
a general or specific domain ontology and proposes semantic annotation
suggestions. A software tool is presented to implement the integration
process, and an illustrative example validates the effectiveness of our
approach
An i* based approach for conceptual modeling of business process technology
Abstract. Recently, the use of technologies in organizations is a key
feature to automate business process. On the other hand, the conceptual
modeling of information systems is about describing the semantics of
software applications at a high level of abstraction. However, at present,
the modeling of business technologies has not been given at conceptual
modeling level. Therefore, in this paper we present an approach to represent
technology at conceptual modeling level in order to know the impact
that represents to current business processes. We validate and formalize
the approach through a real example in the domain of inventory
management. In order to model business technologies, the i* modeling
language was enriched with business technology modules that has been
used to model technology that enables business processes execution. This
approach allows system analysts to take right decisions on selecting technology
to implement in software applications in early phases of software
development
Measuring social isolation in older adults through Ambient Intelligence and Social Networking Sites
Abstract. Early diagnosis of social isolation in older adults can prevent physical
and cognitive impairment. This diagnosis usually consists on personal and periodic
application of psychological assessment instruments. Unfortunately this is often a
tedious process and therefore this is a situation that opens up opportunities in
creating new ways of diagnosis. In this context, ambient intelligence and social
networking sites are suitable technologies for automatic monitoring of significant
changes in social interactions of older adults. However, current instruments that
measure social isolation are based on subjective aspects since they only evaluate
emotional social support and they do not consider objective aspects. This is the
reason why a prediction model based on objective isolation variables is needed in
order to measure the social interactions through computing mechanisms. This
paper presents the development of a prediction model from the social interaction
activities that can be registered through smartphone's sensory capabilities, the
personal communications using an online social network and also radio-frequency
identification mechanisms. The proposed model will benefit institutions interested
in developing technological solutions to detect early stages of social isolation and
improve the quality of life of older adults
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
