Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Full text linkWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Full text linkWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
David Mitrany during the First World War. Some Ambiguities in His Biography
Full text linkIn this paper, I will attempt to provide another overview of the David Mitrany activity in his first years in England (1908-1918), to emphasise the important role played by his Romanian origin on his work during the First World War, but also to fill in some gaps remained in his official biography for that period. In this respect, I opposed some information collected from David Mitrany personal collection to several details from the literature presenting him with a „diplomatic and intelligence work‟ in the wartime. These new data provide us another meaning for many of his works in the interwar period.
Rezumat: David Mitrany în timpul Primului Război Mondial. Unele ambiguități din biografia sa. În acest articol, voi încerca să prezint o altă perspectivă asupra activității lui David Mitrany în primii săi ani din Anglia (1908-1918), să subliniez rolul important pe care l-a jucat originea sa românească asupra activității sale din Primul Război Mondial, dar și să completez unele omisiuni rămase în biografia sa oficială pentru acea perioadă. În acest sens, am opus unei informații provenite din arhiva personală a lui David Mitrany unor detalii din literatura care îl prezintă cu „activitate diplomatică și de intelligence” în anii războiului. Aceste noi date ne oferă un alt sens pentru multe dintre lucrările sale din perioada interblică.

Central Europe as a regional security (sub)complex in the interwar period
Full text linkThis article proposes the use of a tool for analyzing the evolution of the balance of power in interwar Central Europe, taking over the theory of the regional security complex formulated by the Copenhagen School. This study starts from the premise that in from 1921 to 1938, it can be affirmed that the ephemeral existence of a central European security complex was distinct from the classical security complex of Europe. Next, the analysis criteria specific to the regional security complex and the diplomatic developments that created the Central European security complex are presented.

Rezumat: Acest articol propune utilizarea unui instrument de analiză a evoluției echilibrului de putere în Europa Centrală interbelică, preluând teoria complexului regional de securitate formulată de Şcoala de la Copenhaga. Acest studiu pleacă de la premisa că în perioada 1921-1938 se poate afirma existența efemeră a unui complex de securitate central european distinct de complexul clasic de securitate al Europei. In continuare, sunt prezentate criteriile de analiză specifice complexului regional de securitate şi evoluțiile diplomatice care au creionat complexul Central European de securitate.

The Balance of Power between Idealism and Pragmatism: The Dynamics of Spheres of Influence in the International System
Full text linkThis article investigates the enduring relevance of balance of power theory within international relations, specifically examining the dynamic between idealistic aspirations and pragmatic considerations in the structuring of spheres of influence. It explores how the concept of power balancing has historically underpinned major power negotiations, using the Treaty of Versailles (1919) and post-World War II peace conferences as focal case studies. These events exemplify how states have utilized balance of power strategies to curb hegemonic ambitions and promote systemic stability. By integrating the balance of power framework with the Regional Security Complex (RSC) theory, this study highlights the reciprocal impacts between global structures and regional security practices, emphasizing the crucial role of major power endorsements in sustaining regional alliances, as seen in interwar Central and Eastern Europe. The analysis demonstrates that while power balancing efforts aim to foster a stable international system, legitimacy and comprehensive support from larger powers remain essential. Ultimately, this study posits that effective stability requires not merely a distribution of power but also cooperative security measures, assuming that a durable order relies on inclusive strategies that acknowledge and respect the security interests of both great and smaller powers.
Rezumat: Acest articol investighează relevanța durabilă a teoriei echilibrului de putere în relațiile internaționale, examinând în mod specific dinamica dintre aspirațiile idealiste și considerațiile pragmatice în structurarea sferelor de influență. Explorează modul în care conceptul de echilibrare a puterii a susținut istoric negocierile marilor puteri, folosind Tratatul de la Versailles (1919) și conferințele de pace de după Al Doilea Război Mondial ca studii de caz principale. Aceste evenimente exemplifică modul în care statele au utilizat strategiile de echilibru de putere pentru a limita ambițiile hegemonice și a promova stabilitatea sistemică. Prin integrarea cadrului echilibrului de putere cu teoria Complexului de Securitate Regională (CSR), acest studiu evidențiază impacturile reciproce dintre structurile globale și practicile de securitate regionale, subliniind rolul crucial al sprijinului marilor puteri în susținerea alianțelor regionale, așa cum s-a văzut în Europa Centrală și de Est interbelică. Analiza demonstrează că, deși eforturile de echilibrare a puterii au ca scop promovarea unui sistem internațional stabil, legitimitatea și sprijinul complex din partea marilor puteri rămân esențiale. În cele din urmă, acest studiu susține că stabilitatea efectivă necesită nu doar o distribuție a puterii, ci și măsuri de securitate cooperativă, considerând că ordinea durabilă se bazează pe strategii incluzive care recunosc și respectă interesele de securitate atât ale marilor, cât și ale micilor puteri.
