Creutzfeldt–Jakob Disease Associated with E200K Mutation and SARS-CoV-2 Infection: Pure Coincidence or Neurodegenerative Acceleration?
No full textSeveral recent studies reported on some patients developing Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (CJD) following coronavirus disease 2019, but, to the best of our knowledge, this case is the first reported in Italy on an onset of a CJD genetic form (gCJD) immediately after COVID-19 infection. We present a 51-year-old woman with a positive family history for CJD, who, two months after a mild SARS-CoV-2 infection, presented a rapidly progressing dementia diagnosed as CJD through clinical features, imaging, electroencephalography, and cerebrospinal fluid analysis. Genetic testing revealed the E200K mutation (p.Glu200Lys) c.598G>A, with homozygosity for methionine (MET) at codon 129, thus confirming the diagnosis of Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease. She passed away two months later. Interestingly, our case confirms that homozygous E200K gCJD patients are characterized by a relatively younger age of onset; moreover, it also sheds light on the neurodegeneration underlying both prion diseases and COVID-19 infection. In our opinion, the rising global prevalence of neurodegenerative complications following COVID-19 disease adds urgency to the study of this potential relationship, mostly in elderly patients who may experience worse long-lasting outcomes systemically and within the nervous system

Soul\u27s Eye, a book of poetry by Petrucci, was published by Braden Press on 1975 January 1, and is currently out-of-print. The illustrations in Soul’s Eye were completed by Glenn Pacitto.
Petrucci hosted “The Creative Connection”, a self-development talk show for four years on KPFT 90.1 FM in Houston, Texas. His guests included leaders in human potential and self-improvement, along with stars such as Ray Charles, Carol Channing, Mickey Rooney, Joan Rivers, and author Richard Bach. Petrucci\u27s interview with Ray Charles is registered in the United States Copyright Office in the Library of Congress.
Petrucci designed and taught classes at the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy involving psychological principles to new recruits. He was a psychotherapist for over ten years in the Providence School System in Rhode Island. He was a salesman in educational sales, and is the founder of the Kenneth Petrucci Seminars, which were presented for twenty years at corporations, organizations, and colleges such as Brown University, the University of Houston, and the Rhode Island Dental Association. Recycled Fibers in Reinforced Concrete: a systematic literature review (short version)
No full textThe construction and building industries are among the most impacting activities on the environment. As concrete is one of the leading composite materials for construction, the identification of strategies aimed to reduce its environmental impact is crucial for greening the building industry. One way to reduce this impact involves the opportunity to recycle waste material employing it as fiber in concrete reinforcement, following the circular economy principles. The feasibility of using different waste materials in Recycled Fiber Reinforced Concrete (RFRC) is attracting practitioners’ attention. The main reasons are the possibility of reducing raw materials withdrawals and costs, waste disposal volumes, environmental pollution and improving resource conservation. Additionally, the introduction of different fiber reinforcements in concrete can effectively enhance its toughness, strength, shrinkage and durability. Through a systematic literature review, the paper analyzes the academic literature on concrete reinforcement using recycled fibers. The main goal is to provide an exhaustive analysis of the phenomenon with rigorous and reproducible research criteria. The original 648 records were collected through the Scopus database. After material evaluation, 194 papers matched the research questions formulated. The material was critically analyzed using structural dimensions to group literature into analytical categories. The analytical categories employed were type of research, keywords network analysis, sustainability, RFRC properties, material of recycled fibers and source industries. RFRC is a research topic, which is rapidly growing over the last years and scholars’ attention is focused both on engineering aspects and environmental sustainability considerations. Results show how the recycled materials that have been mainly studied are plastic fibers and steel fibers, followed by natural fibers. Eventually, the study provides limitations and proposes future lines of research
Emergency remote teaching: an explorative tool
No full textThe worldwide rapid spread and severity of the infectious disease caused by Coronavirus forced the WHO to declare a global state of pandemic emergency during March 2020, by leading the governments around the world to adopt policies that created the widest rift of education systems in human history. Italy have temporarily closed each educational institution, by causing the disruption of tertiary education for 16.89% of the Italian learner’s population. To ensure the “pedagogic continuity”, universities adopted the transitioning from traditional face-to-face to online learning. This paradigm shift to fully remote teaching solutions represents the so-called emergency remote teaching (ERT) in contrast to the traditional teaching inspired by Bologna process principles such as teaching quality and student satisfaction. In a landscape of emerging difficulties connected to ERT contexts, the quality assurance of higher education recalled by the Bologna Process may be not appropriate. We propose an evaluation model for the quality and ERT success across two dimensions used as proxy variables: students’ engagement (SE) and success performance (SP). Within the faculties, we analysed the performance and hence the knowledge, skills and/or attitudes acquired by learners, within the students, the focus was the engagement as interest, motivation and involvement. Under this perspective our research question has an explorative nature: we are interested in detecting empirical evidence about the learning assessment and engagement in higher education with focus on students’ engagement and their success performance during ERT. The investigation carried out on Iulm University’s student population (N=775). We integrated textual data related to the students evaluation of ERT and their career data such as credits, marks before and post disease. The results show the relations between the two dimensions taken into account, with a multidimensional approach we created a factorial plan useful to create an agile tool of analysis in the ERT context

No full textAn anomalous effect in the near field of crossing microwave beams, which consists of an unexpected transfer of modulation from one beam to the other, has found a plausible interpretation within the framework of a locally broken Lorentz invariance. A theoretical approach of this kind deserves to be reconsidered also in the light of further experimental work, including a counter-check of the phenomenon. © 2018 The Author
Behind closed doors: Freelance nurses and the reality of unmet care needs in Italian home care setting. Insight from a phenomenological descriptive study
No full textBackground: The term 'Missed Nursing Care' (MNC) refers to any aspect of nursing care that is not delivered, partially delivered, or delayed. MNC has significant negative consequences, including adverse patient outcomes, safety risks, and decreased job satisfaction. While extensively studied in hospitals, MNC in community healthcare settings, remains under-researched, especially in Italy. This study aims to explore the phenomenon of MNC in Italian home care settings by documenting and analyzing the lived experiences of freelance nurses, focusing on the characteristics, influencing factors, and consequences of MNC as perceived by these healthcare professionals. Study design: This is a descriptive phenomenological study. Methods: Using snowball sampling, 12 Italian freelance nurses were recruited and interviewed from November 2022 to February 2023. Data collection was based on in-depth interviews, that have been transcribed and analyzed using Giorgi's phenomenological framework. The study report adhered to the COREQ-32 checklist for qualitative research. Results: Thematic analysis revealed four main themes: dimensions of MNC, organizational challenges, consequences of MNC, and family-nurse collaboration. Freelance nurses frequently addressed unmet fundamental and complex nursing needs, highlighting significant clinical, psychological, and economic impacts on patients and families. Organizational issues, such as rigid public service schedules and inadequate staffing, were identified as primary contributors to MNC. Families played a crucial role in managing care and collaborating with freelance nurses to ensure continuity. Conclusions: This study provides novel insights into MNC in Italian home care settings, emphasizing the critical role of freelance nurses in filling care gaps. The findings suggest the need for systemic changes to improve flexibility, staffing, and integration of public and private nursing services. Further research, particularly quantitative studies, is essential to validate these findings and explore broader implications for patient care and health outcomes
Effect of insulin glargine on cardiovascular risk analysed by mean HRV
No full textType 2 diabetes mellitus is an insidious disease that is increasingly present in geriatric population [1]. The greatest difficulty is represented by glycaemic control in geriatric patients often not very compliant with diet therapy and drug therapy. A new insulin glargine 300 units/ml formulation seems im- prove patient compliance due to the lower volume of insulin to be injected and improved glycaemic control over 24 hours. The HRV signal, derived from digital electrocardiographic recording, is the simplest and most imme- diate analysis that consists in calculating some temporal parameters [2]. HRV is a simple statistics derived from beat-beat intervals of sinus origin expressed as units of time in milliseconds. Data in the literature indicate that a decrease in HRV, measured with time domain analysis, denotes a worse prognosis and/or an increased risk of mortality in patients with heart disease, especially in the elderly ones
